We just got back from a delightful trip to HH. It was our first visit there.

The weather was sunny and beautiful, 75 to 80 degrees three out of four days. The last day was much cooler, but still sunny. Although the resort had guests, it was far from crowded. There was virtually no one at the beach when we went, and we had the entire Beach House to ourselves for lunch one day.

We attended and observed a couple of the children's activities to check them out for when we might return with other family members. We played Goofy Bingo, and my DH actually won! :D
The story time with cookies and milk in Big Murggie's Den was well attended, and the kids had fun. T-shirt decorating at the recreation building near the pool also seemed to be a big hit with the kids. The pools were warm enough to swim (the spa was wonderful), but the slide was not open. We visited Savannah one day, and wanted to take the Dolphin Tour on the last day, but it turned out to be too chilly for us for a boat ride. And, we missed the campfire because we attended "A Private Affair" that night. But, at least we'll have some things to do when we return!

The highlight of our visit was "A Private Affair." Chef Gordon prepared a gourmet "lowcountry" meal for us in a Grand Villa, complete with candlelight! The meal was delicious, and Chef Gordon was a gracious host. Based on our experience, we highly recommend "A Private Affair" and suggest you try it at least once. We're going to make it part of every future trip to HH.

We attended the member meeting on Wednesday, and here's a summary of what was said:

1. HH walkways damaged by growing tree roots are undergoing repairs now, and building exterior painting will start in a couple weeks. New stain-resistant sofas and new shower curtains have been installed in all the units.

2. VWL is expected to sell out in December. HH is expected to sell out "a couple months" later. VB also is nearing sell out, but the pace is slower than at HH. It is expected the Beach Club villas will be presold, but nothing is firm and no dates for sales to begin have been set.

3. A special financing program has started for members wanting to add on points. The interest rate is the same whether you finance for 3, 5 ,7 or 10 years. For example, the rate is 11.5% when financing with 20% down and paying by direct debit for 50 or more points. The rate is 12.5% with 10% down. If you put half down and finance the other half for a year, the rate is 8.5%. MB now is $13 a point at HH and VB, $10 at VWL. (which we already knew, thanks to this board!)

Something to note when visiting the island: If you plan to go to Harbourtown, make sure you do not drive any form of an RV. We had planned to see Harbourtown and take the boat from there to Savannah. But, when we got to the Sea Pines gate, we were denied admittance because of what we were driving. We had a small, 19-ft. RV that is more like a van than a motor home. Apparently, RVs are not permitted in the Sea Pines area. It was our first visit to HHI, and we didn't know that. The good news is, we had no such problems at our Disney resort, or visiting the Beach House.

If anyone has questions, we'd be happy to answer
:)

Nice report, but we just have to know more about the Private Affair! What did the chef prepare and serve? Thanks.

nickglover,

A Private Affair is wonderful! Here's how it works: You call the resort ahead of your visit to make a reservation. Chef Gordon Holmes will call you back and discuss the menu with you. He has suggested menus of South Carolina lowcountry specialties that you can chose from, but you can ask for whatever you want.
The meal includes an appetizer, an entree, and dessert and a different wine with each of the three courses.

We just selected our dinner from his suggested menus. We had the Dafuskie Island crab cakes; the grilled shrimp and pork tenderloin, peas and whipped potatoes; and cherries jubilee. We had a couple dietary restrictions, and he was happy to work around them.

You can participate in the preparation of the meal as much as you want. For example, you can go shopping with him if you want, and you can help him cook, if you like. We were celebrating our anniversary at this meal, so we pretty much let him do the work. But, since we both like to cook, we observed intently, and asked lots of questions, which was all fine with him!

At the appointed time and day of our Private Affair, we went to Grand Villa #2822 at the resort, and Chef Gordon was there getting the dinner ready. The dining area at the Grand Villa was decorated in candlelight, and on the table was formally set. The chef himself is a very gracious and interesting fellow, and since it was just my DH and I, we enjoyed talking with him. He is a French-trained chef, and we got lots of great cooking tips from him. At the end of the meal, he gives you copies of the recipes of what he prepared for you.

The cost of this is $120 for two, and $40 per person for groups larger than two, which we thought was pretty good for having a meal prepared by your own private chef for a night in a Grand Villa! And, although we tried, the chef did not accept a gratuity.

I have all the suggested menus he sent me, if you'd like them posted, let me know. Also, Webmaster Doc attended A Private Affair recently, and you can seach for his post on this message board. (He had a meal similar to ours, I recall.)

I highly recommend this uniqure event! I hope to make it an anniversary tradition for my DH and I.

Your meal sounds wonderful! I might be able to convince hubby to try this! There will be three of us at the meal, so do I have it right that for three people it would cost $120 ($40 per person)?

I would love to see the suggested menus. I don't want you to go through any bother just for me but it would be very helpful in convincing DH to try this. Thanks so much, it sounds like you had a very special anniversary dinner.

Thanks for the detail. I read Doc's earlier review and I was wondering what variations in food you had. Sounds great, especially when I had SlimFast for lunch! (One can still dream!)

For our dinner, I did a mix and match from Chef Gordon's menu, and we had all the recommended wines.

Specifically, we had the Daufuskie Island Crab Cakes, which were HUGE and loaded with crabmeat. Our entree was the Barbecued Grilled Shrimp and Pork Tenderloin, with the Horseradish Whipped Potato and the Lady's Island Peas. The horseradish in the potato was just a hint. The pork was moist and tender, and I learned hpw to get it that way at home, too. And, we had the Cherries Jubliee. (Being a chocola-holic I would have loved to try the Chocolate Mousse Brownie with the Grand Marnier, but my DH isn't wild about brownies. Maybe next year...) All the portions were large, and everything was delicious. :D

Chef Gordon gives you all the recipes so you can try to duplicate the dishes at home.

The cost was $120 for two, and I believe for three it would be the same at $40 each. A good deal for a group :)

On the subject of food at HH, Chef Gordon also runs cooking classes at the resort. And, he had a wine and cheese event one evening, but we had to leave that day and missed it. :(

We also missed a Friday night "Broad Creek Oyster Roast," an all-you-can-eat event at the campfire including roasted oysters, boiled shrimp, BBQ ribs, corn-on-the-cob, hushpuppies, and cold draft beer, all prepared outdoors "before your eyes." Cost for that was $29.95. There also was a kids menu for that event including chicken fingers, mac and cheese, corn-on-the-con, and lemonade for $8.95. The CMs at the resort raved to us about the oyster roast, but, alas, we were on our way home.

Hope I've answered everybody's questions.

The Private Affair menu sounds great! I would probably pick selections similar to the ones you enjoyed. The oyster roast sounds wonderful too. I appreciate your taking the time to post all this information. Looking forward to my visit to Hilton Head next month! :)

Lisa,
I'm sure you'll enjoy it. It's a whole different atmosphere than WDW. It has plenty of fun and interesting things to see and do.
Please tell us all about your trip when you return.

Oh, those menu selections sound wonderful!!!! We're still trying to plan our first trip to HH and can't wait. Does anyone know if there's a price adjustment if we don't drink alcohol?
