we just got back from WDW a few days ago. in general the trip was kind of disappointing. :(
i was gonna go into all the details... but never mind about that.
i'll just keep the report to BWV.

we checked in around 7pm Sat night. amazingly the room met our room requests (located over Big River Grille, high floor + non-HA). i had prepared myself and expected to not have any room requests met since we were checking in so late. but it was a pleasant surprise. it was unclear if the room was preassigned, or if the CM checking me in happened to find a room that met the requests.

we had dedicated non-smoking studio 5031 overlooking the basketball + ring toss games.
we'd wanted to try this specific location because it has a wide open view of Crescent Lake + Spaceship Earth without being really far from the elevators.
the recent report about the incessant loud ringing of the boardwalk games had me worried, but it actually wasn't that bad because we go to bed late, so the ringing stopped by the time we wanted to sleep.

anyway, i forgot to bring the checklist of things that are supposed to be a studio, so didn't get a chance to do that inspection.
things did appear to be pretty clean at first, no crumbs on the ground or anything like what has been reported in the past. later we found (as usual) very dirty cups, one of them with soda pull tabs in them, and a dirty kitchenette sink.
late at night, we noticed a few minor maintenance issues: the vanity sink was kind of clogged so drained too slowly, and the bathtub faucet leaked a little.
we decided we didn't feel like having maintenance in the room, so we chose to deal with it since we're only there for 2 nights and report the issues to the front desk later when we checked out.

the next morning while getting ready to go to the parks, both dbf and i noticed we had 5 or 6 red marks each on our hands that looked like bug bites. they burned, but did not start itching until later that day. when we stopped by our room that afternoon to pickup some new water bottles, we decided we should look around for bedbugs or any other insects in the room.

so that afternoon, we checked the bed... there were no bugs on the bed. then we looked behind the bed and noticed a few very small light-reddish-brown ants crawling. we looked around the other side of the bed (under the mirror) and there was another ant there. dbf immediately went to the side of the room with the balcony and looked in the bottom corner there, and there had to be about 20 or 30 ants crawling around in a line along the walls of the room, and up the wall into the high corner of the room. it looked like there might've been a crack in the corner between the wall and the floor. it's also possible that there was a crack in the high corner along the white ledge, because the ants were clearly crawling to/from 2 locations.

we immediately called the front desk to report the ant infestation, and ask if we could change rooms. the CM apologized and allowed us to change to a different room. they also sent Pest Control up to spray, and explained that sometimes they might spray the rooms around us that have ants, and the ants just go into a different room (our room for example), and that "normally" BWV guests don't have any ants in their room. i suggested that they need to work on getting rid of all the ants because this is not acceptable, but she again claimed that BWV does not really have an ant problem, and our case was "unusual".

in any case, after wasting park-time dealing with our situation, we packed up everything, and moved over to room 2015, a smoking-optional lockoff studio also over Big River Grill.
dbf of course checked all over to make sure there were no ants.
btw, later that night we found that the bathtub faucet also leaked in our new room, plus the tub was really clogged, and the tub floor was blackened with dirt. since it was our last night, we just decided that at check-out we would tell the front desk about all the maintenance problems in both rooms. we were really bummed out and just wanted to go to sleep and come home the next day. *sigh*

that is the the first trip to WDW where, on the last night, i was happy to be leaving WDW the next day. i guess it was just a case of too much Disney in one year, and a string of annoying events... one of which was the BWV ants problem.

i'm drafting a letter regarding the ants (which after researching, i believe they were fire ants, i have a picture of one of the ants in case anyone is curious). i am still unsure of who i should be sending the letter to, so if anyone has a suggestion, that would be helpful.
from what i recall, fire ants are a huge problem in Florida, and i really hope that they can stop the problem from spreading in WDW. i remember some much more unpleasant reports about BCV ant problems this year, so it looks like it has spread over to BWV now.

anyway, i'm happy to be home, but the itching, burning, painful bites on my hands are a constant reminder of the BWV ants. :(

(oh btw, this is long enough, but i'd wanted to mention that when we asked to be changed to a different room, they told me that the rooms overlooking the Boardwalk Green above Wyland Galleries, those rooms are definitely NOT Boardwalk View rooms. they are Pool/Garden View. just FYI)

a pleasant one.

:(

Hope they can rectify the situation after the fact.

Sorry the trip didn't go as planned. I know you were really looking forward to this. I will look for the ants before sleeping in Feb,

Did you end up getting to Fantasmic?

Sandy

Sorry your trip had some unhappy moments :(

But as far as the ants go....I'm afraid that you can never REALLY get rid of ants. You can spray when you see them, try to put out preventive stuff, etc., but it the South, ants just have a way of getting where they want to go. I've lived in the South all my life, and dealt with ants, my whole life too. Seems like everytime you think you've got 'em licked, back they come in thru a new crack or hole.

Just my two cents worth. ::MickeyMo

I'm so sorry the ants ruined your trip. For them to be on the 5th floor and right around the Boardwalk to boot seems strange.

Maybe if they treat the lower floors regularly, the ants just go higher and that's what she meant by "unusual"? That' they're not expecting them to go that high? Just a thought.

well, the ants alone wouldn't be enough to ruin my trip, so to speak...
there were quite a few other annoying things (general issues with WDW going downhill, for ex.)
the trip was okay, just i am surprised at how much i wanted to leave after just 2 days. i was fretting before i left about how little time we would have at WDW, but then it turned out i couldn't wait to get home.

i, too, was surprised at the ants up on the 5th floor. it really seemed like they have a nest in the walls or something like that. it looked like they could've been coming to/from the GV next door to our room.

in any case, in all my 17+ trips to WDW, i have never encountered an ant infestation in my hotel room, whether it was some off-site crappy motel, or a Disney resort. some reports earlier this year about BCV (a mom found ant bites all over her child, and lifted the bed covers to find them swarming around. someone else went home, and unpacked her bag to find a swarm crawling around her luggage, etc.) really scared the crap out of me. i hoped the problem was limited to BCV, and then later there weren't any more reports, so i thought maybe Disney was able to exterminate the ants.
turns out some have moved over to BWV.

it just worries me. i know, it's difficult to battle these creatures, but i want to make sure DVC and BWV are well aware of the problems.
even if they can't kill them all, at least they should make all their best efforts to keep them at bay.
better to nip it in the bud before it gets to be a bigger problem.

(btw, i didn't bother trying for Fantasmic. instead i just relaxed at World Showcase and watched Illuminations during the 15 min it took me to walk back to BWV to get the car and go pick dbf up at MCO, heh.)

There actually is a potential heath/safety issue here: my oldest DD15 is deathly allergic to ants/bees, etc.. We live far enough north that this is generally not too problematic, have our house sprayed, and at places like WDW she carries an epi pen.....but, if she were bit in the middle of the night while sleeping- that worries me. I know that BWV/BCV can't totally prevent ants, but we seem to be getting a few too many reports like these.

I don't know if this helps in the south, what I do when I see the march of the ants is place those ant houses along the trail to let them carry the poison back to the nest in hopes of killing the queen, and nest. After a day I then start a spraying compaign.

Maybe there's more than one kind of fireant? The ones I'm familiar with in Texas sting like the dickens when they bite. Truly painful, and horribly itchy from the get-go. You would have woken up had they bitten you during the night. They don't really cause red spots, but rather tiny blisters show up where you've been bitten. I'm hoping your bites were from the ants (no bites would have been better!) because if they weren't, that means another pest was around and remained undiscovered. The ants are yucky enough!

One other thought - Fireants CAN be controlled, at least in a building. We have them all over our yard, they just pop up in a new place when we destroy a mound (we're talking poison here). However, we have not in 10 years had a problem with them inside the house because Terminix treats the house regularly. Having lived in a non-treated Texas house, I know the difference. The other important thing is to Never Ever Never leave food of any kind where it can be reached by the ants. That's asking for it. I think some extra attention to cleanliness and regular treatments could make this problem go away at BWV. It's discouraging they have not been successful so far.

A can of bug spray may be just one more thing to pack for staying at BWV or BCV. :(

I hope you get some satisfaction from your letter. Let us know if they do anything for you.
My sister is deathly allergic to ants and those bites would have killed her. She lived in Texas for a few years when her hubby was in the AF. She was bitten by a Texas fire ant and had a mild reaction. A few years later when she moved to FL she was bitten by a FL ant and went into anaphylactic shock. when she was bitten in Texas her body built up too many histamines, she now has an overabundance of histamines that have begun to eat away at her internal organs. Each time she is bitten her body makes more histamines. Her disease is called systemic mastocytosis. I invite her to stay with me each time I visit WDW. I have never checked for ants in the rooms because I have always had faith in Disney to be the best with cleanliness. I guess I had better check more carefully from now on.
I think you need to include the fact that you had the bite marks and itch for days after the trip was over. Who knows what type of future problems you might have due to this trip. You could be allergic and not show serious signs the first time, but who knows what the 2nd bite might do to you. Peggie

It sounds like you were doomed from the start!!

We had lots of little black ants in a one-bedroom on the fourth floor of the Wilderness Lodge Villas in late October. Required two treatments by pest control to finally get rid of them (into someone else's room, I guess!).
Be glad they aren't cockroaches. I was in Shanghai a few weeks ago, and the big seller in the gift shop at the hotel was Raid!

Mickey527,

I also lived in Texas and has had my first problems with fireants down there. The first time I had fireant bites I was swollen. The second time my back was bitten from laying on a raft on a river and my whole back was swollen. The people I was with were shocked at how big the swollen part of my back was! Gross. My Dr. said if there was a third time I would be in big trouble and needed an epipen. I live in the north now and haven't thought about those nasty fireants in years. Once you are bitten by a fireant you don't forget the pain. I would never have been able to stay asleep once bitten. We are going to the BWV this winter. I never thought I would have to bring along an epipen but I had better just to be safe. What a sad statement that I am now worried about staying in our hotelroom because of ants.!:(
