Got back yesterday afternoon exhausted. I love Disneyland, but I cannot say this was among our greatest trips.

We stayed at HoJo (our first time staying there). The beds were extremely comfortable and the rooms were a nice size. However, there aren't enough outlets in the room and half of them didn't work. We booked 2 rooms and the outlets were a problem in both rooms. The little kid pool was a big hit with the kids (ages 2 and 5), however, we only managed to get down there once during our stay. One downside is that the concrete around the pool area was so hot it would burn your feet if you walked on it. The heat/humidity was horrific during our entire visit, so we didn't relish walking to and from the hotel more than once a day. We did have a Disney view for fireworks, which was nice. All in all, I would probably not book HoJo again, it is just a bit too far to walk with very small kids and we didn't really use the pool or watch the fireworks from the room. I will probably bite the bullet next time and pay for an onsite hotel.

Our first morning we went to Goofy's Kitchen. I came away feeling kind of angry (okay, really, extremely angry). It was well over $300 for our party. The food was fine but they only have 5 characters that wander lethargically through every 1/2 hour or so. The characters completely ignored our 2-year-old until finally my son-in-law was like, "Hey, how about you say hi to my son." We had been to Goofy's once before several years ago and it was amazing but this time it was a giant waste of money. One exception to this was Chip, he came back to our table and had a very extended wonderful interaction with all of our party. However, I am saying never again for Goofy's Kitchen.

We spent the rest of the day fighting with MaxPass. Getting reception was nearly impossible. We had problems just getting the app to even open. Frustrating. Having said that, when MaxPass did work I admit I much prefer it to running for fast passes. Also, my husband and I decided not to use a couple of our passes and my daughter and her husband were able to use them instead (we were even in a different park at the time). Also, you could book fastpass from anywhere, including hotel, once you had been into the parks. I do have to throw out there that the Matterhorn fast pass line is a giant unorganized mess (with no CMs herding people until you get to the front of the Fast Pass line and they are RUDE).

Another blip in our trip was when we rode It's a Small World. When we got up we were stuck to the seat. When we stood up our clothing was ruined. We were covered with black goo. We aren't sure if the seats were melting (yes, it was that hot) or if it was a combination of the heat and someone spilling something all over the seat. Regardless when we complained about the situation the CMs were beyond rude. All we wanted was for them to do something about it so no one else had their clothing destroyed. We weren't asking for them to pay us for our ruined clothing, just hoping maybe they could fix the problem, but nope, they simply did not care. So, check your seat before you sit down.

We went to Carthay Circle for lunch the following day for the WOC package and the service and food were amazing, of course. I had the tri-tip and it was definitely the best tri-tip I've ever had. The server was beyond fantastic. It was the bright spot of our entire stay. The reserved "standing" was also very good (there was hardly anyone in the section, so the view was superb). There were even some benches to sit on if you got there first. We felt like our money was well spent on this (unlike Goofy's Kitchen).

We also did lunch at the Red Rose Tavern and it was okay, nothing earth shattering. The gray stuff is really quite good and I didn't find it insanely sweet like I have heard some mention, but I confess to being a sugar addict. The lemon rose desert was also pretty good. We tried the chicken sandwich, the poutine fries and both flat bread pizzas. All of it was good and I would definitely eat there again. Though it was really heavy, so I would probably do it for dinner rather than lunch. I did find it absolutely hilarious that those Rose Cups people were waiting in long lines for were all over the park, thousands of them. I did not get one as I thought they were pretty cheap looking for the price.

Then came the next giant downside to the trip. Our granddaughter was in that little fishnet photo opp at Pacific Warf when she was stung by a bee. She was screaming in pain and we were trying to rush her up to the first aid at the front of the park but a marching band was blocking the quickest route. We went to the security standing there and told them what was going on and they told us to move along, they wouldn't let us through the side path around the band. They told us to take the long way around. We were deeply concerned about our granddaughter as bee allergies run in the family and so we wanted her checked as soon as possible but they simply did not care. On the bright side, the people at the First Aid center were truly amazing.

The next day and a half were fine, other than the extreme heat/humidity. We were able to ride most of the rides we wanted. The walkways felt insanely crowded but lines for rides weren't bad and fast passes were available late into the day (other than Guardians and Radiator Springs). There were also spots for the night parade right before it started. Quite a few spots along main street actually.

We had dinner at Wine Country Trattoria. We had reservations but we still had to wait 45 minutes for our table and the service was pretty terrible. Food was good, wine was great, which I suppose balances out the terrible waitress. What sort of makes me mad about the poor service we seemed to be getting at the restaurants is we had a big party that triggered the automatic tipping. I can't say I felt this waitress deserved 18%.

We managed to get a front row center spot for the new Soarin and we all thought it was far superior to the old version (which we all loved). I'm not sure I understand why people hate this change. We thought it was great. We also really enjoyed the Guardians ride, again thinking it was a huge improvement over Tower of Terror. We even had a plaid in the group ahead of us who started giving us a guided tour. This group had two plaids and they were ignoring her so we got her services for free, LOL.

I know I probably sound like we had a really terrible time, which is not the case, but it just wasn't as good as past trips we have had to Disneyland. I really felt the CMs were overall awful this trip (we had one who was absolutely wonderful over at the Mater's ride in DCA, but he was the only outstanding CM we ran into this trip). Starting off at Goofy's really set the tone though, I admit I am still pretty upset about that giant waste of money.

The most amusing part is that I will have plenty of chances to see if this bit of a let down trip was a fluke, before we even went into the park our first day we decided to upgrade our tickets to annual passes, LOL. I definitely would not have done that if I had waited until the end of the trip.

We were there the same time as you and I can't believe this happened to you!
When our boat arrived, a woman stood up from her seat and she had been sitting on an unfolded map (not sure why). We watched her try to pull it up and it pieces of it were stuck on the seat and didn't come up. it looked kind of goopy when she did pull some up - like maybe it had gotten wet? She picked at it a bit then left and we told the cast member that we didn't want to sit there. We showed the CM the map mess and suggested that they clean it before the next guests get it. She said they would, we got on the next boat and then didn't think anything more about it ... until I saw your post!
Could that have been what you all sat in? I'm so sorry that happened to you!

Agree the heat was more than we expected!
Glad you were able to find some highlights despite some frustrations!

Definitely send a comment to Disney about the problems during your visit. Be detailed and explain exactly what happened, when, and give dates, times, CM descriptions, etc. Your experience matters to Disney, and it sounds like there are some issues that need to be addressed. Problems aside, I'm glad the rest of your trip went well.

Hmm. Makes me wonder a little about our reservation for Goofy's Kitchen when we go in September. Then again, our party is aged 53, 49, and 24, so we shouldn't be too upset about minimal character visits. We already know that Donald isn't there, and he's a favorite of ours. :donald:

My son really wants to go to Goofy's (We went there in 2013 and he wants to return as his "special activity"). It makes me nervous.
Goofy's really has not been the same since they went with the predictable smaller lineup.
What is the smaller lineup? When approx. was the change made?

my family also loved Goofy's kitchen, but after our last visit (in April), I doubt we will go back again, the characters are now limited to Goofy( in the front taking pics and inside for the line dance thing), then chip, dale, pluto and minnie. it's a lot to pay for only 5 charaters, i remember back in the days (2-4 yrs ago) they also had some princesses, snow white, alice, sometime even the fairygodmother... it's just not the same as it use to... now we just stick with Breakfast with Minnie

I'm not sure the first time we went to goofy's but I'm going to guess 2014 and it was those 5 characters even then. As long as you know going in ahead of time, I think it's fine. My son is obsessed with Minnie (??) so as long as we see her we don't really care. The others are a bonus. We usually choose Goofy's over Minnie's breakfast b/c the food is superior.

We were there the same time you were. My kids are older; 17, 20, and 24, but they all agreed they wanted to do Goofy's Kitchen because, in the words of my 24yr old son, "what's a trip to Disney without a character meal??" LOL, this was when I was considering not doing one, given their ages, but they all wanted to do it. It was a huge waste of $172. The character interaction was minimal. Dale stopped at our table for about a half a second and waved, and was on his way before I could even put down my fork and pick up my phone for a picture, I had to call him back. Minnie bypassed us completely. I had to ask our server if she could get her to come over. Pluto and Chip were very interactive, but all in all, the magic of character meals is gone for us and we decided we would have rather had a really good meal at Carthay Circle or some other nicer restaurant. We won't be going back for a character meal until we have little kids in our party again.

As for the heat and humidity....it seems everywhere we went we overheard people talking about it. We live in the midwest now, but are originally from the east coast so that level of humidity didn't really seem bad to us.

Sorry to hear about the the bad experiences at Goofy's.
Goofy's isn't what it use to be, that's for sure.
If we are interested in a CB we book elsewhere now.

If I have a new to Disneyland person in our group, it's Minnie and friends at the Plaza Inn for sure. Due to the mass number of characters that drift by.

If Stitch is a priority, it's Surf up at PPH.

As many others, we don't even count Goofy's as an option.

I guess being WDW vets, we're used to the character meals being exactly like that, with just 4-5 constant characters. So Minnie's breakfast was a big change for us. With Goofy's it did seem a bit disorganized, and we also had to ask our waiter to track down one of the characters who passed us by. We also had a great interaction with either Chip or Dale, I forget which! :). Food was fine.

If you're staying at the Disneyland Hotel, I would definitely do it. If you're not, there probably isn't an advantage for doing it over one of the in-park character meals, unless it help you skip a park day ticketing (e.g., first or last day).

I hope you don't regret your passes! CMs have been seriously hit or miss for awhile now, you just have to adopt a whatever-man attitude toward them when they're jerks.

As far as the kid and the bee go- I would have had the father/mother/whoever was holding her just run for it. There's no excuse if you think someone's life is at risk. They can stop the darn parade, they have pre-cautions in place. If anyone ever feels they have a life threatening situation PLEASE DON'T ASK permission & be forced elsewhere. Get where you need to be and deal with the consequences later. Will you get banned from the parks? Maybe, but it's worth it if you're in a life-threatening situation. Are you creating a life threatening situation by running in front of a float? Yes. So be careful. What's security gonna do? Tackle you & a kid in the middle of a parade? ROFL.

Too bad about Goofy's. We loved it years ago, but had a bad experience about 5 years ago and it really never seems to have turned back to the great experience it used to be.

Matterhorn: yikes! FP growing pains!

Carthay: OMG we did dinner for the first time last trip- YUM!

Thanks for a nice rundown OP, as I said I hope you enjoy your future trips & don't end up regretting you AP

Sympathise with your Goofy experience. We have had some amazing meals there in the past with all sorts of characters like Aladdin and Jafar and Alice...but now it's a production line. Yes, if that's what you expect it's ok, but it's no where near as good as it used to be, sadly!

At the time of the interaction, a cool, calm attitude certainly helps. But afterward? We almost always put in a comment at City Hall, Chamber of Commerce, or on the website. Disney cannot fix what they do not know about, and CM incompetence or rude/offensive behavior is unacceptable. Given, anyone can have a bad day, but CM training won't improve if CMs aren't held accountable for their behavior.

Regarding GK, all these complaints need to be heard! For the OP and others, send your comments to Disney to tell them exactly why you didn't enjoy your experience at GK (and, if applicable, what you liked better in the past). GK has needed improvement for a while, and management needs to hear about it.

Our last time at goofy's in 2014 was bad too. Characters kept missing us. Finally got manager and he apologized was able to get them to our table and refunded 25% back in my CC.
We haven't been back since. I always speak up during our time there and then follow up with the guest services.
They can't fix it if they don't know there is a problem.

I've noticed a trend over the past few years (APs for about 12 years but going for decades) of CMs not being as helpful/kind, strictly sticking to the (new)rules with snarkiness/attitude, not all but increasing number. All while costs keep going up exponentially. Its definitely not as "magical" as it used to be. Their priorities seem to have shifted from guests to shareholders.
