We just got back yesterday from a seven night stay using the dining plan.

Before we start, just a little about our group:

I am 40 and have been to Disney World six times total.

My wife is a few years younger and this was her 5th trip.

Our daughter is 5 and this was her second trip.

This was our second trip using the dining plan, so hopefully I'll be able to explain how we used it and how it worked out. The restaurants I'll be reviewing are:

Chef Mickey's Dinner
1900 Park Fare Dinner
Akershus Breakfast
Play-N-Dine Breakfast
Biergarten
Tusker House Breakfast
Crystal Palace Lunch

as well as:

Flame Tree BBQ
Earle of Sandwich
Liberty Inn
Cosmic Ray's
All-Star Sports food court
El Pirata et el Perico

Keep in mind as I go that we are not super picky eaters. we like the basics and really don't like seafood. Our daughter is a pizza, hot dog and chicken nuggets kind of kid. As I review, I'll try to tell you about out Ressie time, character interaction, service and food quality.

I'm going to call it like I see it. For example, if a counter service place serves cheeseburgers, I'm not going to be critical because it is a cheeseburger. I hear so many people say things like "It was just a burger." The way I look at it is that's what it is supposed to be.

Feel free to ask any questions you need as we go. I'll do it day by day.

Day One:

We arrived at MCO at about 9:30 and got to All Star Sports by 11:00. We waited a little and got our room. Nobody was really hungry so we just went to the Magic Kingdom since we had a 6:30 at Chef Mickey's. It was pretty crowded in the park, but that was to be expected since it was the middle of the afternoon.

We did manage to ride several things and see the afternoon parade before we had to leave for our reservation. We got there about 6:15 and there were a lot of people waiting. It was well after 6:45 until they called us in.

We posed for a picture, which we didn't buy (more on that later) and finally sat down close to 7:00.

Here are a few pics of the food:

This was my first plate. I had some ribs which were very good as well as green beans and some mashed potatoes and Mickey shaped ravioli. Below that is the salad I got the 1st time through also.

Here is my daughter's plate from the kids section and the salad she had:

Now the food here was very good and the place was clean. We did have a very long wait to get in which kind of put a damper on things. The characters all stopped and signed autographs and posed for pics but they moved through kind of fast and didn't really do anything special. The characters present were Mickey, Donald, Pluto, Minnie and Goofy. As far as the interaction goes, I'd have to just say it was OK. The last time we went in July 07 it was much better, but we had a ressie right as it opened, so it wasn't as crowded.

Plus, in fairness, our daughter was having a little stomach issue so she wasn't really being super demanding of the characters, so they might have spent more time if she wanted it.

The service was fine. The waitress filled our drinks and took away the dishes just fine.

the only two real negatives were things that repeated many times the whole trip:

1. The waitress really and I mean really fished for a tip. I never see this at regular restaurants where the server keeps bringing it up. She kept pointing out that I could charge it to my room if I wanted although it was very clearly marked how to do it. It was also very obvious on the bill that the tip wasn't included.

Call me a jerk, but at that time I made a policy that anyone who asks for a tip or brings it up will lose some money and that will go to those who just bring the check like a professional without busting my chops. I just don't want to feel pressured by the server while I'm on vacation!

2. The picture! Granted, it was a nice picture and all but one 8x10 and a few 5x7's for $30 seemed a little steep. It also kind of bugs me that they have the audacity to try and get this out of you when the bill for the 3 of us would have been close to $100 had we not been on the dining plan. If Akershus can give away the picture with the meal, so can every place else! It just kind of makes you feel cheap turning away the pic in front of your child, but we would have put out close to $100 extra dollars on pics had we taken them from every restaurant. It just seems wasteful to print them up and just throw them away.

I wish they would either eliminate the pics completely or just give them to you. It would even be acceptable if they just put it on a photopass so you could sort it out when you get home rather than have to make that decision right there on the spot.

For some reason, whether it was the wait to get in, the photo or just the fact that our daughter wasn't feeling 100%, my wife and I both felt that Chef Mickey's just wasn't the same as the last time. Granted, the food was good, it was just missing something. Maybe it was just that we were very tired from the trip also.

We do like this place and have already decided that we will go back in all likelyhood next time.

I'll get to day two as soon as I can...

I'm still recovering from the flight back last night!

Can't wait to hear more!!

I'm with you on your #1 & 2. I just skip the pictures now :)

I guess I have some time so I'll get to day two now:

We went to the Animal Kingdom very early and had a great day! We rode the Safari's and Kali River Rapids and Dinosaur with a fastpass. We also saw It's Tough to be a Bug, rode Triceritops Spin and spent time in the boneyard and even had time to get my daughter 5 or so autographs.

We wanted to eat lunch early so we could watch the Nemo show then get out of dodge so we chose the Flame Tree BBQ. This is the one place I was really looking forward to because I have copied their recipe and made their ribs at home and wanted to see how close I was.

I got the ribs, my wife got the chicken salad and our daughter got a hotdog (I think). It is tough to remember because I totally forgot to take pictures. In a way I'm glad I did because I was disappointed in this one. The ribs were not really meaty at all and seemed like they needed cooked longer to become more tender. Also, they didn't pull the membrane off the back of the ribs which made them kind of gross. I'm not a fan of coleslaw or baked beans so I just ate the ribs. The BBQ sauce was very good though.

My wife seemed to like the salad and my daughter ate the first of many hotdogs this trip. Overall, I'd have to say we might just skip this one in the future. The version I made at home was much better.

The plan next was to go back to the hotel for a rest then to 1900 Park Fare for dinner at 4:35. WOW! Is the Grand Floridian beautiful or what! When I make it big... that's my place.

We, after the picture pose, were seated quickly. we were one of the 1st groups. The food here is very good. There is quite a bit from which to choose. Sadly, I was so impressed that I forgot to take pics again of the first plate or two, but got these after:

Here was a second helping I got from the kid's section. It was all very good!

I was looking forward to this strawberry soup I read so much about and I wasn't disappointed.

All in all, we really liked it here. The character interaction was actually very good and funny. Cinderella, Prince Charming, Lady Tremain and the two step sisters were all there. Each was in character 100% and spent more than fair amounts of time at our table.

This one would have been near $100 also if not on the dining plan, but we were, so we didn't care.

The service was good up until we got the old gratuity speech. This guy wasn't as bad as the Chef Mickey's lady, but it did cost him some! Eventually somebody is going to make out here!

Overall we all liked this place and recommend it strongly. It is an added bonus to just get to hang out in the Grand Flordian for awhile.

More still to come!

Great reviews, keep em coming!!
I agree with the photo's...it is sad to think they are just throwing them all away. Maybe if they were cheaper, they would actually make even more money!!!:confused3

Day 3:

This was Sunday morning and we went to Epcot's early hours and got to ride Soarin' then get a fastpass to do it again since it is our favorite ride there. we had a 9:35 at Akershus which was one of our favorites last trip. This year was much of the same.

We were there about 9:15 and didn't get in until about 9:45. We immediately had our pic taken with Belle, which was ours to keep. This is a really nice thing as I said in previous posts.

Once seated our server got our drinks and we went up to the cold bar. They had all kinds of danishes, fruits, meats and cheeses. It was all very good.

Here was my cold plate:

And my daughter's:

After a few minutes they bring out a platter with eggs, bacon, sausage and a great potato dish that we love:

Trust me... it is great food. As a matter of fact, there was so much at the cold bar, we only ate one platter between us. Everything was done so well.

The characters were Cinderella (which was a surprise), Belle, Sleeping Beauty, Ariel and Snow White. They were all very nice and spent plenty of time at our table.

The service here was good as always. We didn't have to wait for anything and as a bonus... the girl waiting on us didn't mention the tip so she got the first round of bonus money! Good for her!

Seriously, if you have a daughter that likes princesses, this is the way to go. It is much cheaper than the breakfast in the castle and is just as magical. I can see us going here even as our daughter gets older. It is awesome and I just can't say enough about it!

Our plan was to hit Typhoon Lagoon after but they were closing down the water parks early due to the large crowds so that was out. We decided to take a rest then head to DTD to look around and eat at another place we liked... Earle of Sandwich.

The last time we went I had a Beef N Bleu and thought about it for two years. When we walked in I was shocked... NO BEEF N BLEU ANYMORE!!!! I went into a mini panic mode! Now what do I do? It took a minute, but I decided on the Italian with a side of macaroni salad and a pop. It was no beef n bleu, but it was still awfully good.

My wife got her standby "The Original" and like the last trip... she liked it a lot. She just got chips as her side:

Our daughter went with the kid's grilled cheese and some pudding. She also liked it and ate most of hers.

I was a little upset about the beef N bleu (if I didn't mention it before) but this place is still great! It is on our list everytime we go.

More still to come!

Lovin' your reviews! We are hoping to eat at many of the same restaurants. Can't wait to read more.

Thanks for taking the time to take pictures and share your reviews.

Great review so far. I will be going to Chef Mickey's and 1900 Park Fare also. I also hate when they are fishing for the tip. That really turns me off and I do give less because of it. When we go it will be 7 people so they will automatically charge 18%.

I am enjoying your reviews :). I also can't stand when it is pointed out multiple times about the gratuity. I like your idea of bonus money for the servers who deserve it and less for the whiners :thumbsup2.

Great review, keep them coming. After reading it so far, it's making me want to change my ADR's again, we would really like to try 1900 PF. So many choices, so little time:laughing:

reviews from a fellow Pittsburgher' I'm in! :goodvibes

We're hitting a few of the same places when we go in September. I'm glad to know about the pictures at Chef Mickey's. Do you have to have them taken before you go in, or can you skip it? Great reviews! Keep them coming!

Fellow Steeler fan! Great pics and reviews...I'm in for more!

Your buzzer will go off and they take it. Then you get the pic. After that you go in.

we were thinking about just skipping the pic, but I figured I'd make them waste their money. If everyone did that, they might stop doing it.

I might e-mail them about it because it really is irritating. At least they aren't pushy about it, but like I said, it does make you feel cheap.

I'm not a cheap person, but you can't buy everything there!
