I can't help it...
I start running around and screaming.
If my family sees a bug near me they run from ME!
They say I scare them:rolleyes:

I feel your pain Candylover!! ;)

I am the exact same way

Last week, I was talking with a CM (she works in the parks, not the hotels) about many things, including Disney cutbacks, etc. She said that the cutbacks "weren't in things that a guest would notice, like pest control." I told her that I certainly may notice cutbacks like that.

I don't care that they're part of the "native fauna." There bugs, and I don't want them in my hotel room.

I don't think you "freaked out." "Freak out" is what will happen when/if I see one in July!

Thanks, DISNEYLOVER, I appreciate the encouragement....now maybe you should describe the CM; he/she sounds like what we should look out for!!!!

My opinion is:

1. You overreacted -- it is Florida, there are bugs...big ones.

2. I can't believe you carried it down to the front desk, where you looking for compensation of some sort?

3. I don't think the CM was inappropriate, he was trying to add some levity to the situation to a person carrying a bug in a glass.

Unfortunately,

From what I have seen on these boards, you have to do something like carry it down to the desk. I have seen quite a few threads where guests were doubted by Disney as to whether or not they really had a roach or roaches in their room.

I think the OP said he just wanted them to know what was in the room. I honestly don't know what I would have done..carry it outside, kill it, ?. I do know it probably would have gotten me somewhat upset and as silly as it sounds I probably would have asked for a different room. My children probably would be horrified if they saw one just because of size and appearance. That would be a damper on anyone's vacation and I don't think it's too much to ask for a little acknowledgement from Disney personnel-even if they just say "i'm sorry sir, we do try our best to prevent this sort of thing, would you be more comfortable in a different room or could I send housekeeping up for a "once over" on your room?" Don't you think a pleasant response like this from a CM would make almost anyone feel better?

I know some think the CM was only being humorous but the comment wouldn't have sat right with me either.

I know I should probably be more worried about mosquitos but I just can't get past the gross reputation of cockroaches.

FLoridaFam, I see from your post that you are from East Lansing. My sister lived there for 3 years when she went to law school, in an apartment off Abbott Lane. She liked the area and often bragged that the winters were cold enough that there weren't too many bugs. My sister HATES bugs, especially spiders. Wouldn't you know it, a spider got in her bed and actually bit her! She felt something on her hip/backside and jumped up and had a big welt developing... she found the attacker FLATTENED... She figures she rolled over on him! She was extremely upset and worried about the "bite" but she survived... To this day, she SWEARS that insects have radar to terrorize the folks that hate bugs most!

Here's what a health inspector told me once:

Cockroaches, no matter their size, have a fairly limited range. They don't travel too far unless they get into a box or luggage (not to worry...they die if they are checked). In HIS opinion, as far as bugs go...they are pretty clean and don't have near the potential of spreading germs, etc. as other bugs, say flies.

His comment to me was....where do you usually see flies? In garbage, dead animals and manure...right. Yet, most of us (myself included) swat a fly and move on, but go crazy over cockroaches. As for all of us spider killers (okay so I make DH do it)....their main menu is other insects, too. Kill the spider...keep the mosquito...I'm so confused!

I don't want any bugs in my room, EVER, but I also understand that they exist in one form or another EVERYWHERE! Even your own home has creatures you can't see....think dust mite. If Disney, or any other hotel, refunded everyone's money everytime they found a bug....they'd go broke or we'd all be paying alot more than we are. The CM should have been more sympathetic or at least indicated he would make sure housekeeping or extermination knew about it.

Now, had your room been infested and you had found many of these creepy crawlys...that's a different issue. But one bug does not a dirty hotel or total refund make, especially in Florida.

I am sorry, but I am laughing at the first post. I have not read this entire thread, but if every time I had seen a bug in a hotel room I had caught it in a glass and taken it to the front desk.... too funny!

My suggestion is that perhaps you could call the front desk and ask to have the room sprayed if you see a bug, but this is Florida and unless you want to be surrounded by chemicals you might see a bug or two.

I would estimate the chances that you see a bug at AK occur because a LOT of people keep thier doors open to see the animals.

However, if your children are that traumatized by ONE bug perhaps you should consider having them join the scouts or something so they can see the great outdoors! My experience has been that children are not normally traumatized unless the adults with them get hysterical! Kids like bugs until they are taught otherwise for the most part.

Obviously it's also tough to be a Disney CM.

I did not find the CM's remark unacceptable. If I had a caught a bug and taken it to the front desk and the CM had burst out laughing and said, "You Have Got to be Kidding", that to me would have been inappropriate.

I found the remark an attempt to lighten up the situation and would not have been offended.

But then I would never catch a bug and show it to the front desk. I would just kill it and go on. If the next day there were multiples of the same bug, then I would contact the front desk.

But as someone said, everyone's opinion of what is acceptable is different and when you share experiences on a public forum, not everyone is going to agree. :)

My children would probably just be horrified because we don't see roaches up here. We love lizzards and can't wait to spot them running around whenever we go to Florida. Roaches, no thanks.

Who knows, maybe they would laugh if they saw one but hopefully we'll never find out.

They love the outdoors...swimming, biking, walks, running, the beach. We even visited the local bug house last week and saw a madagascar hissing cockroach and each child in my son's class had the opportunity to hold it.

I don't think I would go hysterical if I saw a roach in our room but I certainly wouldn't ignore it.

Just my personal opinion, I don't like roaches and if my kids don't then that's okay.

Maybe I'm in a bad mood but I have to say your comment comes off like parenting advice and I wasn't looking for that.

colleen costello,

Did she go to Cooley?

My children go to the Dr. on Abbott Road. :D

Hope she enjoyed her time here in East Lansing.

We do love it but we could do without the winters.

When we were at the Bug House at MSU last week they had a Black Widow spider and I mentioned that sometimes you can find them in grape bags from the store. The entimologist said that is where they found theirs. YUCK! I'm probably more likely to encounter one of those than a roach.

So I couldn't sleep all night last night, checking the sheets for the "big bug". DH thought I was nuts, but he's the big "nancy" when it comes to any kind of bug!

I assume the parenting advice comment was aimed at me.

Sorry if I offended you. However, if you want everyone to agree with you maybe you are at the wrong place. As I have learned once you post here whatever you say is fair game and can be taken any way by any person regardless of what the orginal poster may have meant.

OK I've read 7 PAGES of talk about COCKROACHES!!!!

My comments are
1) If I was a CM and a guest brought me a bug in a jar...I also would probably make light of the situation with a joke.

2) IT'S FLORIDA ....You are guarenteed to see large Coachroach's....

3) Kill it and continue with your vacation ...unless of course there are multiple roaches then call the front desk for assistance...

Floridafam, yes, my sister went to Cooley. I loved it when she lived in Michigan as she was close enough to visit then. She lives in Alaska now (!) and part of why she loves it is NO BUGS. Other than mosquitoes, they have very few insects there. Bugs or no bugs, the cold and the dark would make me whacky.

Lori lived in an apartment complex called Villa Monte which was really quite nice for the price, except for the unfortunate spider attack which did occur right there. Her apartment was ground level on one side and sort of basement-level on the other, so she thinks that is why the killer spider sought her out.

It occurs to me after reading all this bug stuff that this is one more reason to stay at a Deluxe over a Moderate or Value -- it's harder for the crawlies to get in when the hotel has interior hallways! These could be animatronic roaches sent to encourage us all to upgrade! :)

FYI: I (coincidentally) got a funny Email from a friend today claiming that Formula 409 is a great bug killer when you can't find your RAID. I am packing a bottle when I visit Florida in June!

colleen costello,

Villa Monte is almost directly across the street from our doctor's office.

Right now, everyone up here seems to be having a problem with black ants.

I always made my DH kill any bugs or spiders but now I just take a deep breath and do it myself. I did refuse to kill the bees that we had coming in through our fireplace last summer. I made sure they couldn't get out and called someone from the house next door. GROSS! There was a nest in our chimney cover.

I understand that most bugs have some purpose in life but what is a roach good for?

To make us appreciate the other bugs and lizards. :)

Imagine one of those things coming at ya . . . [/B][/QUOTE]

It happened to me!! One of those suckers came at me when I was 8 months pregnant - we had just moved to Louisiana in the heat of July - I was sitting in my recliner after a day of moving in. I looked at the wall, and there was this King Sized Roach walking down it, then across the floor, toward me. First time I ever saw one...got up slowly from my recliner and backed off, then the SOB started flying. Betcha ya never saw an 8 month pregnant woman do a back-flip!

LOL! You just don't SEE 'em in the deluxe resorts...cause they're in the walls! (Sleep well!!!):p
