Recently returned from POR, July 7th -18th. I'm not going to do a big food review so if you'd like to know anything, please feel free to ask. I'll try my best to answer.

Just some info - this was a solo trip and dining was not a problem at all. I paid in the old fashioned way too, no dining plan or DDE card so I can't help on that front. Also, no character meals for me, this was purely a food extravaganza!

Here is where I ate
BREAKFAST
Boatwrights, Kona Cafe, Boma
LUNCH
GF Cafe, Liberty Tree Tavern, Chefs de France
DINNER
Boatwrights, Le Cellier, Boma, Concourse Steakhouse, Brown Derby, Jiko

Counter service included Earl of Sandwich, Tangierine Cafe, POR food court.

Stand outs included Le Cellier filet mignon and Jiko roasted Brentwood corn soup with saag-dahl (spinach-lentil) cottage cheese, then pork tenderloin. Never had a bad meal anywhere, good service too.

Ask any question you like. Hopefully I can help.

How was your experience at the Brown Derby? What did you order? Would you return? I can't seem to convince DH to give this one a try. He thinks it looks boring.

What did you have for breakfast at Boatwrights? We are staying at POR in October and thought about having breakfast there a couple of times.

I'd like to hear about Boma , will be going there Solo for breakfast in September.

OK I'm going to write some of my thoughts on the restaurants you asked for. I haven't included cost as I haven't got my Visa bill handy right now LOL. The menus on Deb's site lists the prices anyway but if you want that info, ask me and I'll look out my details for you.

This post will be for Jiko and Brown Derby.
JIKO – lovely setting, had a table big enough for 4 so I had LOADS of space! It was pretty busy. My server was very knowledgeable and friendly but he kept a slight formality which I thought was nice in the more upscale setting. I love wine so I had a glass of De Trafford Chenin Blanc. This was on the suggestion of my server. All wines are South African and the list is quite large.
My server was very helpful in menu selection too as he was able to tell me what would be too much for a solo diner etc.

My choice for appetiser was a new soup which had only been introduced that night. Oh boy, it was WONDERFUL! Roasted Brentwood Corn, with saag-dahl cottage cheese. Saag-dahl is spinach-lentil and is Indian in origin. It sat on the bottom of the square bowl and the thick, creamy soup was poured from a jug into it. The flavour was outstanding. I could have eaten it over again. It ad a little bit of spice in it too, quite Indian in flavour but not overwhelming. The bread served was wholemeal, and served with tandoori butter.

Entrée – pork tenderloin with sweet potato dumplings and mushroom ragout. I asked for the meat to be cooked medium-well and it was perfect. This was a very filling meal, beautifully presented. I liked that they used a variety of mushroom types, including shi-take and chanterelle. It added some interest to the ragout. Very tasty and delicious. I would order it again. My initial plan was to have the monkfish but it was no longer on the menu.
No dessert as I was stuffed by this point.

BROWN DERBY – this was part of the Fantasmic Dining Package. I ate at 5.30pm and the place was so busy! They were turning people away who didn’t have ADRs, telling them to try again after 8pm. Note – with FDP you still have the whole menu to choose from, no limit.

Again I had wine, this time a red – NZ pinot noir. Very nice and a little different as I usually stick to white. NZ wine is my favourite at the moment though so this aided the selection.

Good service again, efficient and polite, unobtrusive. I ordered Honey-Chipotle Barbecue "natural bacon" with a spicy green papaya salad. This was delicious. The meat was kind of like ribs but without the bones. Small portion but a lovely appetiser.

Entrée was grilled salmon with creamy polenta, gorgonzola, oven dried tomatoes, bab arugula and balsamic butter sauce. This was very nice, and big too. The polenta was delicious and the sauce was more balsamic than butter which suited me just fine. The gorgonzola cheese was in very small chunks around the outside of the dish in the sauce. I’m glad there wasn’t too much of it as it was VERY strong, almost overpowering for a delicate fish like salmon. The fish was large and nicely cooked but it was way too salty for my taste. I enjoyed it well enough but it could have done with much less salt.
Would I go back? Hmm, maybe but I’d choose a different entrée.

Here is my answer for Kona Cafe, Boma and Boatwrights. Again, no prices listed at the moment.

KONA CAFÉ – I was going to the GF spa that morning so I ate at the Poly first. I’m so glad I did as it was a very laid back, relaxed start to the day. It was fairly busy but there were several empty tables while I was there. Again, the service was fast and server was polite and efficient.

I started with a fruit cup which was very large and included watermelon, canteloupe, honeydew and grapes. I wasn’t quite finished it when my main breakfast dish arrived – eggs benedict. I put the fruit aside and started work on this huge plate. It was so yummy. There were 2 lightly poached eggs on English muffins, which just exploded all over the plate as I put my fork in the yolk. The hollandaise sauce was light and plentiful and I had bacon too. This was a very delicious and filling dish which I would order again. I also had a pot of Kona coffee. A lovely way to start the day.

I did see several orders of Tonga toast going past which looked very good and very big! I prefer savory to sweet though so it was never really an option for me.

BOMA – this is a favourite of mine. I had both breakfast and dinner there so I’ll start with breakfast.
The restaurant is much quieter in the mornings, both in sound volume and in numbers of people. I really like the atmosphere. If you like coffee, get the Kenyan press pot rather than the regular coffee. You do have to ask for it specifically and it costs $5.99 extra, it’s not included in the buffet price. I also had a glass of Frunch juice which is a concoction of many types of juice and is VERY tasty and sweet.

They have regular breakfast items on the buffet and it was very fresh and warm. There’s an omelette station which I didn’t use but they did look delicious and big. There is always meat at the carving station, like a brunch selection. It was honey roast ham if I recall correctly. There was also some African choices including a favourite of mine, babotie. It’s like a hash made with lamb and beef with mild curry flavours. An interesting and different taste to have for breakfast!

Of course, Boma always has wonderful bakery selections as breakfast is no different. Various types of bagels, croissants, breads etc, lots of muffins. I was impressed with the choice although you do have to ration yourself! I think it’s one of the best breakfasts on property, which doesn’t allow its buffet style to detract from the quality.

Many comments I made above can also be said for dinner. Hey guess what, I had wine again! A glass of South African sauvignon blanc – yum! Lovely selection of appetisers, my favourites being the soups, some more exotic than others and the hummus. I especially like the roasted tomato hummus with the flatbread. I also tasted some delicious Moroccan cous cous salad which had olives in it. There really is oto much for me to list or even remember, but I’d say be brave and try a little of some of the selections. They really are not as weird as you first might think. I always bypass the carvery meats at Boma, preferring the fish. That night there was coconut curry salmon which was melt in the mouth delicious. I also had babotie – again!, sweet potato mash, warm cous cous, pap (looks like mashed potato but is a mealy polenta type side) and a new veg for me, which was beans in sweet ginger sauce. As I said before, I prefer savory to sweet but the desserts are lovely. Small enough to try a few if you’ve left space! Stand outs were banana bread pudding with vanilla sauce and coconut tiramisu.

BOATWRIGHTS – I had dinner here after I arrived at POR, out of convenience more than anything else. It was nice, not outstanding but good. I had house salad to start, with a nice raspberry vinaigrette, parmesan crostini and some very tasty spiced pecans. This actually was very nice, a little different to the usual house salads. Those pecans were very nice. For my entrée I had pot roast. This was a nice large chunk of meat which was fork tender but it had quite a large piece of fat on one side which I don’t like at all. There still was a lot of meat but I had to cut through fat as well. Mashed potatoes were red skinned and good. The only disappointment was the fat.
Breakfast was very nice. Not overly busy and service was friendly both times I was there. I had the glorious sweet potato pancakes with bacon on the side. These were served with honey pecan butter, so yummy and very filling. I definitely recommend these. The last morning before I went to the airport I had a fruit cup, good and a little smaller then Kona’s cup. Then the Boatwright breakfast which was eggs your way (scrambled), meat choice (bacon), toast, potatoes. Big portion, nicely cooked and very filling. Good prices in here for breakfast, I was surprised.
