CHECK IN/ROOM LOCATION/VIEW
What can I say? We loved it!:D I was traveling with my mother and my 82 year old grandmother, who needed a handicapped room. Check in was quick and easy. The CM at the front desk was very polite and friendly. She didn't mention anything about an upgrade, but when we got to our room it was a savanna view with minor obstructions. The balcony wall was a cement (private) one, and there was some sort of decoration about the height of the balcony wall in front of the balcony, but you could still see the animals when you stood up. We had 3 giraffes around us every morning and night. They probably could not sell this room as a savanna, even though technically it was. We were right over guest services, so I believe it was the sunset savanna. I can't find my resort map right now.:) I loved the location of this room. It was wonderful to see the gorgeous lobby when you opened your room door. We were also very close to the elevators, which made our refillable mugs worth every penny.

FOOD
We only ate at the Mara. My family is not made up of adventurous eaters. Boma and Jiko did not appeal to them. I was pretty impressed with Mara. The food quality was excellent. We also used room service a couple of times. The service was prompt and the food was hot and tasty.

BUS SERVICE
The bus service was OUTSTANDING!!! We did not rent a car so we relied on WDW transportation only. My grandmother was in a wheelchair so I had these visions of squeezing onto a jammed packed bus every day. This was not the case. On some trips, we were the only people on the bus! We never waited more than 5 minutes for a bus! I have read reports of other Disers saying this, but I didn't believe it. ;) Now I know that this is no exaggeration!:) I have only stayed at MK resorts prior to AKL so I thought being "far away" from the parks would be a problem, but with this wonderful transportation, I could not complain. I even enjoyed my short bus stop waits at the AKL. There were plenty of benches and African music was piped into the covered waiting area. The bus service was far above the bus service of the Grand Floridian, where I stayed last year.

POOL
The pool was huge. There was always room to swim around in even when it was crowded. I believe the deepest part of the pool was 4'11. I did not try out the slide, but I did see some adults enjoying it. The kids seemed to love it.

OBSERVATIONS
I saw the famous "bus stop" view standard rooms. There were only 2 of them that would be a real problem. One of these rooms was occupied. The light was on every night and you could see movement in the room. These were the only rooms that I would have had a problem with because they were so clsoe to the bus path. I did not see the parking lot, so I cannot comment on the parking lot view rooms. There were plenty of areas to see the animals, so even if you don't get an upgrade if you booked standard, you will be fine. I liked walking around the resort looking at the animals more than I liked seeing them from the balcony.
Any questions?

Does the AKL share buses with any other resorts? If so, how many stops are there going and coming, to and from the parks?

We stayed at AKL in October, 2001 and AKL has its own bus service. They don't share it with any other resort. We thought the bus service was very good during our stay as well!

Shelly, the AKL does not share its buses with any other resorts! That was part of the beauty of it.;) On some trips to MGM, we stopped at Blizzard Beach first to pick up AKL guests. I think that during operating hours, the Downtown Disney bus stops at Typhoon Lagoon too. But there is no sharing the bus with other resorts!:D

That's great, thanks for the response! Now I am really excited. We were a little concerned about the bus service since we thought the service was slow at the GF. We didn't realize that the resorts completely dependant on bus service were much more efficient at it.

Having stayed at AKL last May, I have to agree with the bus service. It was the best of any of the deluxe resorts. And since you don't share with any other resorts, it's pretty fast too.

Do you remember what your room number was? I have a standard booked in Dec. and may try to get one near that loc.

Tigger, we were in room 4204. Any room from 4201 to about 4207 (I'm estimating) would have the cement wall that is probably considered standard view, even though it is on the savanna.

thanks for the great information. did you take advantage of any of the lodge tours? or storytelling sessions? If so how crowded were they?

Thank you Tinkbell for the very detailed report on AKL. I am staying there in Sept/Oct and I can barely contain my excitement!!!!! :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

Welcome home. I'm so excited about staying at AKL! We've booked standard view and you've comforted me. We won't be hanging out in the room much even while at the resort anyway...so I think we'll be fine. We're they having many kids activities at the pool & lobby? Thanks.

indigo,
We did not take advantage of the tours, but I did spot a couple of groups touring the lobby area. There were only a handful of people in them. I also saw the storytelling from afar while I was exploring and there were about 10 people there. You probably won't have a problem taking advantage of these activities.

jennymouse,
We were not traveling with children so I didn't pay too much attention to exactly what was offered for children, but they had a detailed schedule on the resort map you are given at check in. Also, there is an activities board right by the pool with times and activities listed. I'm sure your children will love the place. I spoke with a nice family who had gone to a night vision presentation of the animals at AKL and their sweet little son could not stop talking about seeing animals in the dark.:)

Glad to hear that you enjoyed your stay at AKL. I will be staying there for the first time during Christmas:D . Did you find the rooms too dark? How was the housekeeping?

Thanks so much for the report, I'm so glad you enjoyed the AKL so much because we are leaving to stay there........TOMORROW!!:Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc

I can't wait!! I was glad to hear Mara has good food and the bus service was good. We ate at Boma last year and just fell in love with this resort.

:D

DDP,
We did not find the rooms too dark. I packed a bright light bulb just in case but we did not need it. Our room had a bright light in the closet. I've read complaints about some closets being too dark so maybe they all don't have a light bulb in them, or maybe people didn't realize that they had one. The room was bright enough for me to read the paper in the night. If you are concerned, pack a light bulb just in case.:D

Our housekeeper was great. Her name was Varlene and she was super sweet. She didn't make any animal towels but she did make some fancy fans a few times. The main thing was that the room was very CLEAN. Since joining the Dis, I pay extra close attention to the little things and everyting in the room was up to par. One day my grandmother wanted to stay in the hotel instead of going to the parks. Varlene would check up on her to see if she needed anything. She was a very nice lady and my grandmother exchanged addresses with her.:D

Tina,
I hope you have a great trip! I can't wait to hear all about it.:)

Tinkbell, what a lovely trip report! Welcome home! I adore the AKL. What a unique resort. *Sigh* By the way, do you have any photos of your trip posted anywhere? If you do, please post the link to them here.
