Hello Just back from a ten night split stay at AKL and Poly Concierge.

Loved both of them. AKL: Just a beautiful resort, building lobby fantastic lots of carvings, it is dark though, but that is part of the feel of the resort, the room worked well for us, we had bunkbeds, queen bed, the little wall between the beds and double sinks acted as an area to dressed. We loved the balcony, to rest on watching the animals. My adult daughter was really taken with sitting on the balcony and just watching what was going on in the savannah. We were on arusha savannah, just right of arusha rock, and a watering hole right of our room.

Our first night, I woke up could see flashing lights, thinking a storm was coming in, I put on my eyeglasses looked out to see a huge giraffe, about 15 feet from my balcony, with others snapping pics of it, with three zebra running in circles, just beautiful and magical, this was about midnight.
To me the best time for viewing was at around 7 a.m. the animal handlers come out in a pickup truck and put food out, and up in trees for the giraffes, all the animals are around them. Saw a handler hugging a giraffe, and hand feeding them from the back of his pickup, just a wonderland of animals.

The ankole cattle, kind of got angry at a new patch of tall grasses that took landscape people an hour to plant, they jumped in it, pulled it out with their long horns, quiet amusing to watch, it was almost like they were taking a hissy fit cause something new was on the savannah.
Talked to lots of young people from south africa. We enjoyed it so much here we added a fourth day to our three day stay before going to the poly. Received all of my room requests, which was nice. But I have to agree with others the room is on the small side, but done up very nicely.

The pool area was great, hubby and daughter were swimming the first day watching the giraffes alongside the pool area. Lots of nooks and crannies around the pool to sit and relax, beautiful lush plantings all around.

Did not get a chance to eat at any of the akl restaurants this time. But the food smelled very good.

The poly concierge. A bit of disney magic here, a bottle of champagne, two glasses, and truffles with happy 25th anniversary written in chocolate. A gift basket with lots of treats. Received my request for location room 1532, patio.

Now the room here was alot bigger than the akl, small fridge, beautiful done bathroom, green marble, clean, in fact a new shower liner was put in.
The room when we entered smelled like the carpets had been shampooed, no musty smell in room. The beds were comfortable, queen size, a twin size day bed, that did squeek when daughter turned but very comfortable for her.
We did not get lieys on arriving, I had to go to the main building and ask for them. The woman there was very friendly and gave me one for my son and hubby and said give a big hug to them.

Loved the ducks, bunnies, birds who came to our patio every morning, sometimes quacking, or even knocking on the glass with their beaks, we hand fed them whole wheat bread. The staff in the concierge lounge were tremendous, very friendly, accommodating, the food was enough for two meals a day for us and snacks all day, I would grab a piece of fruit and muffin for my midday snack, if we did a resort day, apples, oranges, bananas, pears available all day. My son and daughter liked the hot oatmeal every morning. The guava juice, just the best.

The 5 to 7 offerings very good every night, penne pasta, grilled chicken breast with salad, chicken chow mein, mexican night tacos, and shushi night had alternate turkey with swiss cheese sandwiches lots of turkey on them, with a large bowl of cut up melons and grapes, and a platter of cut up vegetables. Big bowl of pudding for children, strawberries and sandwiches. The deserts were a nice touch too. Lots of wine and liquors.
Chef Dick made a beautiful display of animals, birds, palm trees out of carved fruit and vegetables. We met chef Dick and chef Leonard, both very nice. Met the famous Scott also, as I said they could not do enough for us.
The grounds are fabulous, lush just beautiful, mommy ducks and baby ducklings in little streams. I have two number one resorts now. We felt the heat of 93 F. really put a damper in our park days, could only tolerate it till about 1. p.m., did more resort days this trip, missed early entry greatly, as I cannot take the heat and I would get alot done on those early entry days. But still had a very nice time. They said it was 10 degrees hotter than normal.

Next time I will go in the 70' F if I can. We added another day to our poly stay, instead of doing universal, as son got sick at disney quest, daughter got sick from a motion ride at wdw, so we felt we would try universal another time kids voted to stay at the poly one more day rather than change resorts a third time.

Bye,

Deb.

I am so looking forward to going to AKL in October! I want to stay at the Poly one of these days too though......I want to stay at all of them! I'm with you on the heat...it totally drains me. One good thing, you had two beautiful resorts to hide from the heat.

Welcome home & thanks for posting! Hope to see a trip report!:p

Great report! We are staying at poly conc. for the 1st time. Can you tell me about your rooms location? Sounds like 1st floor, but LV or GV? We have a GV for our 1st poly conc. stay, have been to poly before and had LV. Is this room near the conc. end of hall? or farther away? middle? Why did you request it? I am just starting to fill out our "conc. request" sheet (got in mail yesterday) so really anxious for a good choice in rooms. Any garden view room #'s you would recommend and why? I pretty much decide on 1st floor, for non-smoking & patio, usually like the higher floors, but going for the patio & ducks! So glad your trip was great (except heat), we are going in july/aug. because of (possible) more parade, firework, etc.. options. really missed this last fall & dec. We will be returning in october (for cooler) weather, and less crowds to compare. We almost went with akl too but the akl ap price for deluxe room was actually (299.00) higher that gv poly (295.00) so decided on epcot / magic kingdom split, with swan hotel. Thanks, MAHALO! MKY:)

Aloha mkymouse4ever:

I wanted non smoking, and patio cause I like ground floor rooms. This room has a nice assortment of plants for about 8 feet in front of the patio, l530 would be okay too, but it is getting closer to the concierge check in area, and the area that supplies are brought in to the resort, if you are too close to the concierge check in area you will face the stairway and end of another longhouse. The next two to three rooms l534, l536, etc have a small garden in front of the room also, then there are some with a big area of grass in front of them further on and plants again. I think any one of them would be nice. Tikiman is the expert on room locations. I had just asked for patio, and facing the quiet pool not the end of the samoa building.

We had a gardenview and that is what we looked at was a garden and far off the quiet pool, which is nice. The room has a small refridgerator in the armour that holds the television, lots of room for 4 adult sized people to move about, a nice 8 foot closed for clothes suitcases and a safe in the closet.

I chose gardenview because of the low canadian dollar, I had to take my rate for the gardenview concierge and multiply it by $l.63 and that is what it cost me. Over 400 a night. But to compensate, we mainly ate breakfast and supper at the lounge, there was plenty, if you are a medium eater, and if you like fruit. I heard some people making plans for a large supper at a restaurant and just skipping the concierge food. I like to get my money's worth and eating what they had prepared for us to me was the way to do it. Lunch we would eat in a park, pizza or burgers etc.

This was our first time doing concierge, mainly for the food for us cause I didn't do any priority seatings in the restaurants. When we stayed at the akl, hubby and I had to hit the grocery stores about every couple of days, for fruit, yogurts, milk etc. This was nice not having to do that. We were supposed to go to the hardrock for two days, but added another day to our poly stay instead. We love it there, I feel so lucky to have experienced two deluxe resorts for our stay, it has been 6 years since we travelled so this was very, very nice and very relaxing there.

Bye,

Deb.

Sounds good to me. I had planned to ask for the middle to far end of building, we really don't mind the walk and thought you could see the quiet pool better. We have not used the new pool, but really prefered the quiet pool before. Less crowded, more sedate. I thought the last room would be quietier cause people probably wouldn't want to walk that far to the lounge? Oh, well can't wait for this trip. MKY

It sounds like you had a wonderful trip. We visited the Poly twice and I'd love to stay there for our 25th, concierge sounds like the way to go with all that yummy food! I love ground floor, too, but I think we are in the minority! We also did more "resort time" this trip and less park days, it makes for a very enjoyable vacation.
Forget about those kid "meltdowns", with that heat and crowds, adults need their rest, too!

Sounds like you had a great time.

We just came back from AKL concierge for our tenth anniversary without the little ones and we received all the little surprises too.

One day an gift bag with his and hers cologne and an african mask.

Next day an anniversary cake.

It was fantastic.

We sat out on the balcony and drank champagne and ate strawberries dipped in chocolate one night. It was very nice. (We paid for this)

Cottontail, I have a question.

Did you stay in concierge at both AKL and Polynesian?

We have stayed at AKL twice now and thinking about Polynesian Concierge but we are not sure what is better.

The Neverland Club is at Polynesian and with small children, we are thinking about it.

You mentioned that the room at AKL was smaller than Polynesian. Was that a concierge AKL room?

Standard rooms at AKL are smaller.

If you could give me a reply I would greatly appreciate it!

I'm torn on what to do. We love AKL so much and I don't want to be disapointed at Poly, which I'm almost a 100% sure I won't.

Thanks!

Hello: We stayed in a regular savannah view room, I think they are 340 sq. feet., we did not stay concierge at the akl. But we loved the lodge too, and the animals.
The room at the poly was concierge, Hawaii building, and was huge, clean. We had a patio, and the animals that came to our patio was great, bunnies, ducks, birds, a white stork like bird was walking around the pool area, but not on our patio. lol

I can't compare the two concierges, all I know is that we were quite happy with the poly, but be aware this was our first time at concierge service. We usually do room only. If the price was right we would definitely do concierge again. At the akl, I had a savannah room for 185 including tax, they wanted 425 for a concierge room, in my canadian dollars that would have been like close to 700 a night ouch.

Hope this helps,

Deb.

Lbyc: Thanks, and true, true, true about down time.

Dborges: Wow, they treated you great, we never used the neverneverland babysitting service. Now that I think of it you must have had a deluxe savannah room with the concierge service. Again we had the regular savannah room, but we had four adult sized people in it.
My daughter loved sitting out on the balcony as much time as possible, she was taken with the animals, and so were the rest of us.

I think when I go back, probably in two or three years, we will do a moderate or value resort depending on how many of us go, do the park days while here and move on to one of the deluxes (I would having a hard time choosing between akl and poly) at the end for a few days to relax. This way I will save a few dollars as well. I really felt it was a waste to leave these beautiful resorts. My adult son was happy just doing the resort days.

Deb.

Thanks for the report Deb. I only visited the AKL but in 54 days we will be at the AKL Concierge. Then we are switching over to the Polynesian Concierge for another week. I can't go to WDW with out stopping at our second home;)

Glad you enjoyed the Polynesian Concierge and thanks for the AKL info.

Steve

Hello Steve:

Thank you for your site and all your help it allowed us to have a fab vacation. Enjoy your vacation.

Just one question how do all you young ones cope in the heat in the summer, it was 93 F while we were there not humid though, supposed to be 83 that time of year. I was so thankful that I had these two beautiful resorts to sit back and do resort days in the heat that was easy to cope with, but the parks are another matter. We really felt special at both resorts.

Loved the poly concierge food offerings, kept all of us especially my son fed all day. My hubby is still talking about the cookies, deserts and wine in the evening. lol.

Deb.

July does get hot but it is also the rainy season so the last 2 years we had some cloud cover to help with the heat. We did not get much rain except a few days it would rain about an hour at around 3:00. The clouds and rain kept it a little cooler and never stopped us from doing anything. I can only remember one day were I was too hot so we just went to the water parks early and relaxed in the middle of the day. The parks were open till 11 or 12 and even open till 2:00 on the 4th so we had time to take it slow. I love WDW in July.

Steve

Tikiman:

When you come back from your trip at AKL Concierge and Polynesian Concierge, would you be able to give me a comparison?

I would greatly appreciate it.

We are thinking of staying at Polynesian Concierge but wanted an opinion of someone who had stayed at both.

We want to try other resorts but we had such a great time at AKL Concierge we don't want to be disapointed.

Hope you have a fantastic trip.

Thanks.

We are splitting our stay between AKL Concierge and Poly Concierge June 19-27. I would be happy to offer my opinions when we return. We have already stayed at Poly Concierge and we are very much looking forward to trying AKL Concierge. ~Nancy

DBorges,

I will have a full report on both places when I get back.

Hey Deb (cottontail),

When you were talking about the garden view rooms, I think you ment to say 1520 instead of 1530 and 1524-1526 instead of 1534-1536 because the longhouse only goes up to 1534 and I think I know what bushes you are talking about. Just FYI.

Aloha
Steve

Hi Steve:

I might have been messed up, we were gardenview about third room from the entrance, we were l532, we did not face the side/stairs of the other longhouse but the nice garden and I guess in the distance the quiet pool area, building that is there, i think it is washrooms but way off in the distance.

There were many more rooms before you got to the end of the building, I was just assuming that the next one would be l534, but I could be wrong. Now your going to have to check it out.

So if I kept walking past my room, the next room to my left if I was out on my patio looking towards the quiet pool would be what number? I just asked dh our room number and it was l532,

Help me figure it out Steve, lol

You know I never actually walked inside the longhouse past our room.

Okay the first gardenview room when you walk into the building, is it l534, then my room l532, then l530 etc all the way down the hall?

Deb.

Thanks for your awesome report! I am even more anxious to get there!!! Question for you - did you tell them in advance that it was your anniversary or did you tell them when you arrived? Hubby and I are spending our 14th anniversary there a week from Friday and I would love to surprise him even more.... :)

Hi dagny, well I think the reservationist put it down as I said it was our family celebreation trip for our 25th. But when the itinerary came it actually asks you if you are celebrating any special occassion.

It is paradise, we love it, in fact we skipped park days to enjoy the grounds, pool, riding the boat around to other resorts. Have fun.

Deb.

Aloha Deb,

You are correct that the 3rd room from the main entrance is 1532. The rooms go in order clockwise around the longhouse starting on the lagoon side closest to the lounge with 1501-1518 (lagoon view side). Then the corner towards Tokelau is 1519 (garden view) down toward the main entrance 1534 in order. They do not go even and odd so next to your room would be 1533 and 1531. I can see how you thought they were even. Most hotels do even on one side and odd on the other. All the Polynesian longhouses go in order clockwise. I hope that makes sense.

What you saw in the distance toward the east pool (aka quiet pool) was the showers. Did you have any pictures of your view from the room?

Steve
