Just as a reminder, the players are:
Me - Brad, loves to eat and drink but gets full way too fast
DW - Lisa, short & skinny but can eat me under the table
Our stay:
10/24 - 11/4 @ POR
My apologies for the long delay between updates. I travel for work and have been on the road for 5 days. Hopefully, this weekend will allow me to finish my reports!
Day 6 (10/29):
Lisa and I had planned two days at Universal for this trip (neither of us had been to Islands of Adventure, and we also wanted to take advantage of their Halloween Horror Nights) and this was Day 1. We decided to make this our first breakfast day:
Breakfast at Boatwright's (no PS) -
We arrived at approx. 7:30, and had just over 30 minutes until our Mears bus left for Universal. Not much time, so I would first like to give major props to Kim (our server) for making sure we got out on time. She was great.
For Lisa - Boatwright's basic breakfast (scrambled eggs with toast and bacon)
For Me - Crazy Cajun Banana Stuffed French Toast
For both - Strawberries and cream
The menu says that the basic breakfast is "two eggs any style". Yeah, right. Lisa's dish came and I swear they must have used like eight eggs. And they were darn tasty too.
My french toast was out of this world. Didn't even need maple syrup. The strawberry banana sauce that came with it was amazing. Easily the best french toast, ever! The strawberries and cream was fine, but it's a bit out of season for strawberries right now.
Our grade for Boatwright's breakfast - 9 out of 10
Our total bill (not including gratuity) - $21.04 (we left a HUGE tip for Kim)
Off to Universal we go! I really loved the rides there (Hulk, SpiderMan, Dr. Doom, Dueling Dragons, etc.) but firmly believe the park is staffed by Disney rejects. The staff at Universal just isn't all that friendly.
Lisa's one "must" place for dinner this trip was Emeril's. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to get reservations for either night earlier than 10:00. So we stopped by to check out their lunch menu and realized it was almost exactly the same as dinner. Pretty easy decision:
Lunch at Emeril's (Universal City Walk, no reservation) -
We were seated immediately (the restaurant was basically empty) and a whole squadron of waitstaff descended on us. Literally I think we had 5 or 6 people waiting on us...pretty darn cool! Appetizer time:
For Lisa - Warm Brie Cheese and Toasted Walnut Salad with Mixed Baby Greens tossed in a fresh Berry Vinaigrette with Grilled Portobello Mushrooms, Roasted Peppers and Red Onions
For Me - Special Appetizer of the Day, Fresh Lump Crab Cake (I unfortunately didn't write everything down on this one)
For Both - Creamy White Truffle Potato Soup with a Gratinee of Confit Mushrooms, Wild Mushroom Truffle Syrup and a garnish of Potato Chips
Wow! Each of these dishes were spectacular. Lisa's salad, which could have been rather boring, was loaded with portobello and the tastiest berry vinaigrette. Her one complaint was that the brie wasn't melted enough for her taste. My crab cake was awesome. We are both "crab cake snobs," and this one definitely passed the test (very, very little breading, big hunks of fresh crab meat). The soup was beyond extravagant. Creamy and truffle-y. Next came the entrees:
For Lisa - Black Pepper Seared Filet of Beef served with a Sweet Potato Cake, Haricot Verts and Emeril's Homemade Worcestershire
For Me - Special Entree of the Day, Prosciutto Wrapped Cobia with mirliton and lobster jus (there was more, but again I didn't get it all down)
Both entrees were excellent. Lisa's filet was perfectly prepared, but the sweet potato cake made the dish. I couldn't pass up a chance to eat cobia. Now, to my knowledge, cobia is a restricted "sport-only" fish (meaning it can't be commercially harvested) so how they were able to offer this, I'll never know. What I do know is that it was a flavorful, firm, flaky whitefish. My one complaint is that the prosciutto was far too salty. The fish, eaten without the prosciutto, was perfect -- just the right amount of salt from the meat.
We were both very, very full by this point but there was one item on the dessert menu neither of us could pass up:
For Both - Emeril's Banana Cream Pie with Caramel Sauce and Chocolate Shavings
I'm sitting here right now drooling on my keyboard thinking about how wonderful this was. I want some right now!!! Lots o' bananas, fresh whipped cream, warm and gooey caramel... Hubba!
Our grade for Emeril's - 9 out of 10
Our total bill (not incl. grat.) - $98.58
We finished up our day at Universal and headed back to POR. As I'm sure you could imagine, dinner wasn't really necessary, so we did just a small snack at the POR food court:
For Both - Small Cheese Pizza, plate of grapes, fruit cup, water
Our grade for food court - 6 out of 10 (for a food court, the food was just fine)
Our total bill - $11.59
Tomorrow, look for details on Halloween Horror Nights at Universal plus, most importantly, our Reserve Dinner!
