WOW! We had a great time at Universal. That is saying a lot since DH, DS and I were all sick the majority of the trip. DS brought a bad summer cold with him from Austin and DH and I caught it while there. That said, we didn't let it keep us down. Here are a few highlights...

The Hotel:
We stayed at the Royal Pacific Resort. Loved the hotel!!! Can't say enough good things about it. We love the Loews brand. And, while this was not the best Loews we've stayed at, it stills kept up with the brand's standards of cleanliness, friendly staff and activities for the kiddo. We stayed in Tower two. I should have known better after reading the threads on here, but I let them place us without requesting a room or at least a tower. We had room 2640. It had a minor view of the park and some greenery. But it was nothing to write home about. Also, tower 2 seemed furthest from everything. Next time we will request Tower 3 closest to the boat dock and the pool.... the two features we used most

The parks:
Islands of Adventure was our favorite of the two. Not just for Harry Potter... we loved the theming of Seuss Landing, Marvel Island, the Comic Strip area, Jurassic Park and the Lost Continent. This park has it all!!! The early entry came in handy, if not entirely crucial, for visiting the WWoHP. We were done with FJ before the general admission crowds even arrived. Be there by 7:30 and touring the WWoHP will be a breeze.

Universal Studios was great, too. Love the Simpsons ride, MIB, Rip Ride Rockit (DS did this one mutliple times via single rider) and the Horror Movie make-up show. This park seemed HOTTER than IOA with it's attractions more spread out and less shade throughout. More on the weather later.

The food:

We ate ALL OVER I'll break them up by location...

At the hotel... Jake's was delish. Bula Bar and Grill by the pool was surprising yummy with huge portions for sharing. Orchid Court was sufficient for a quick bite on the way to the boat dock in the morning.

At Citywalk.... Margaritaville was just so-so for us. I got a Gluten Free burger and fries which I loved. But the boys were not impressed with their entrees, the crabcake salad and sirloin steak(which had to be sent back once).

Pastamore was also just so-so. I ordered a gluten free pasta with chicken and the pasta wasn't fully cooked! Not talking al dente, I'm talking raw!! DS was not impressed with his pizza, either. Mushy crust, nuff said.

Hard Rock... DH and I both were disappointed with our salads, bland and boring. However DS, who orders steak whenever it's on the menu, LOVED his sirloin steak there. His favorite meal of the trip.

NBA CITY... the surprise meal of the trip... was FANTASTIC. Great service, fun atmosphere and the food was YUM. I had the grilled chicken ceasar, DH had the Blue Cheese and wine reduction fillet Mignon.... amazing!!! and DS had a pizza... also very good. The dessert is not to be missed.... battered and fried cinnamon sugar strawberries with ice cream and two sauces. HOLY MOLY was that delicious!!

In the parks:
Mythos..... is not to be missed. I loved my risotto of the day topped with a juicy pork chop. DS loved his fillet and DH was just so-so about his pad thai, he thought ti was bland.

Finnegan's in US.... great surprise with this one. DH loved the scotch eggs. the onion and potato straw appetizer was so good!! And our entrees were good too.

Three Broomsticks... what hasn't been said about this place?? We ate there three times for the amazing ambiance and pretty good park food. It can't be missed for the shear coolness factor.

THE WEATHER:

No words can describe the heat in Orlando during the summer. But I'll try... melting, burning, stifling, thick, muggy, spontaneous combustion, miserable, unreal...... I could go on and on. I come from a city where 100 degrees temps are not uncommon, but this was altogether different. Humid without a hint of a breeze will kill ya! We always visit Orlando in the springtime. This was our first summer visit..... and our last! We will definitely return to Universal (and, of course Disney) but from now on it's Springtime or bust! Head out early in the morning and come back to the parks at night. That's all you can do to stay alive!

All in all a wonderful trip. WE are Universal converts!!! Look out Disney.... you've got some competition!

:rotfl2: LOVE the words you picked for the weather. The best was "Spontaneous combustion". I am from Houston and leaving on Wed. but I know even with our extremely hot weather (and lack of rain this year) that it will be even worse in FL. I always hate how humid it is, and it gets even worse after it rains! We normally visit in the fall or spring like you, so I am prepared for the worst. The fall is our favorite time to visit.

Glad you had a great time and that you enjoyed Universal so much!

We flew in and out of IAH and we said "Ahhhhh" as we walked through the doors of the airport upon our return. Good old Texas heat with a breeze! That I can handle.

Have a wonderful time at Universal!!! I can't wait to go back!

Welcome to the dark side! Glad you had a good time :) Hopefully on your next trip, you will all be in full health to enjoy it even more!

Glad you enjoyed yourself.:thumbsup2

The thing is you have not even experienced Florida summer heat yet, still too soon in the season. We live here and it gets brutal.

That's what my husband said!! He said.... imagine August!

One thing I didn't add in m original post. I had a really hard time at the Blue Man Group show. I'm have a sensitivity to strobes, lasers, lighting effects, etc. And this was a very tough show for me. I became nauseated and dizzy, got cotton mouth, tingly, etc. The boys loved the show and I felt like a real downer, but i should have known better. I can take effects in small doses but 1.5 hours was just too much for me. Just thought I'd put that out there for people with neurological problems like me.

That's an important thing to note. I'll remember to mention it if that concern is raised again.

I'm glad you guys really enjoyed yourselves. Having so many great theme park destinations is wonderful.

Seeing this thread I thought I'd add some thoughts from our recent trip.

First, we were a group of 6 adults aged from 20 to 50 so that may have some bearing on our thoughts. Also, there were two handicapped adults, both myself and my sister were in wheelchairs/ECVs.

After hearing several places that the themeing does not compete with Disney, I must say we came to completely the opposite conclusion. We felt the themeing, in both IOA and US was amazing. Just little things, like the fact that the ceiling isn't complete in Finnegan's to remind you that this whole park is supposed to be a movie set. We were very pleased.

The food is outrageous. We ate at Mythos of course. We were all very pleased with the food. The bread they serve at the beginning is some of the best I've ever had. And the Tuscan Tomato Soup...it was so good I had to ask for the recipe. They're supposed to email it to me. I hope they do. We also ate at Finnegan's. Again, we were all pleased with the meal. We also had dinner at Bob Marley's in Citywalk. I'm not sure we'd have tried it if my nephew hadn't been a huge Bob Marely fan, but we were pleasantly surprised. The food and the atmosphere was great. I would definitely recommend it. And it was nice to be able to walk into a sit down air conditioned restaurant at noon and be able to get a seat. No 180-day reservations needed!

A small note about the handicapped accessibility. Again, I've heard on other threads that the accessibility at Universal is no where close to accessibility at Disney. Once again, I found this to be in error. In general, we had no problems. We'd stop at Guest Services in the morning to get the documentation we needed and then we were good for the day. We had two issues. One was at Dragon's Challenge. Although my sister's documentation stated that she could not do stairs and needed alternate access, she was directed to an entrance that included a flight of stairs in almost total darkness. She was able to make it slowly with the help of her son-in-law but it was tough. The other issue we had was at Spiderman where we came off the ride to find that my wheelchair was missing. This was my personal wheelchair, not a rental and is specially accomodated to me. I was quite upset. My nephew tracked down the people that had taken the wheelchair and we got it back but if not for him, I'm not sure what we would have done. We did talk to the supervisor at the ride and he said he was going immediately to look at the tapes and see what happened and whoever gave away my wheelchair would receive disciplinary action. So I'm glad they took things seriously.

All in all, it was a great trip and we will definitely be back to Universal.

I will cross post the information about the handicapped accessibility on the Disabilities board as I've found quite a lack of information about Universal there.

Thank you for your thoughts! They were superb!

The heat....This is why I would never travel during the summer.. :thumbsup2

Cheers!

Heat, naaa, just gotta get used to it. It feels better in Florida to me than in the mid-south which is where I'm based. We have had near 100 degree temps while most of florida was in the mid 80s. To me its more humid and hot in the mid south where there are so many more trees than in Fl., but that's just me. Glad you had fun in any event.

Oh, I agree with your husband - the Pad Thai was not great. Bland and they use fettucine, which just tastes all kinds of wrong.

Love Universal, love, love, love. Glad to hear you had a good time.

Glad you had a good time.

The heat is terrible. It is 94 in Orlando right now. I live in FL and last year when we went to Disney I couldn't take the heat. This year we are going to Universal for 3 days so hopefully I hold up better than 7 days at Disney.

I love the fact that you don't have to make reservations months and months in advance. Can't wait.

I think we were there the same time you were. It was hot, but we left high 90s (like 98 degree weather) in AL, so it felt better to us. Plus, we did two mornings of the water rides. I'm glad you had a good time. I wanted to do 3 Broomsticks, but never was back there at lunch time, so will have to put on my list for next time. We like USF/IOA too, and will definitely go back :thumbsup2

Love Universal, love, love, love. Glad to hear you had a good time.

They use rice noodles for the pad thai (it is a gluten free dish), but I agree that it is missing something. It is definitely bland.

I couldn't agree more NBA City is my favorite restaurant in Citywalk!!!!

Great reports from both of you. Lots of great tips.

I still get around terrifically for my age and didn't have any spontaneous combustion situations, more of icebergs ahead captain.:lmao:

Nov/December and the frozen tundra.

So many people rave about NBA city. I am going to definitely try it next vacation.
