Got back yesterday from our latest trip to Orlando, which was our 7th time there in the past 17 years. I am not really one for long trip reports so will just add a few tips/thoughts here that may (or may not) be of benefit to other Brits travelling to Orlando.

Journey Out - Went with Virgin as usual and experienced our first ever delay, 2.5 hours due to the knock on effect from severe weather a few days earlier. It was a pain but its not really anyones fault. Also the sound on my seat back TV was not working:sad1: Other than that the flight was fine.

Orlando Airport - Usual huge queues at Immigration, took about 30 minutes to get through. Went to drop the cases for the second bag drop and was advised to take them ourselves on the escalator. Much better than having to wait at the second carousel.

Car Hire - got to the Dollar desk, and faced with another long slow moving queue and just 2 people serving. Thank heavens for Dollar express, I went straight to the front of the none existent Express queue, produced my Dollar Express card (thanks to the tip from this site) and 10 minutes later was driving out the airport:worship:

Car Upgrade - the sales assistant did ask if we wanted to upgrade our 300C to the luxury version for just $15 a day, I declined so he offered it for $8 a day, I still politely declined and pointed out the bog standard 300C would be far nicer than my 12 year old Renault at home. Surprise surprise, we were given the luxury Touring version anyway at no extra cost.

Villa - stayed in a villa for the first time ever at the easterly end of the 192 by the Turnpike junction. Villas are the future for us, so much more relaxed and easier than spending a fortnight in a single hotel room, space and privacy for all equals a more enjoyable holiday.

Driving - Never really used the toll roads before and previously relied mainly on I4 as our main arterial route, my advice would be to use the toll roads wherever possible, the traffic is much lighter so journey times are less and it was usually only between $0.75 and $1.50 so it was an ideal way to get rid of loose change which I left in the car at the end of each day

Aquatica - the key letters in the name of this park are QU !! We went twice and arrived well before the 10am opening time to be faced with a huge queue waiting for the gates to open, and you then have to walk from the car park past the queue to the opposite end of the parking lot and stand in line waiting to get in the park. After the first hour the queues for all the slides were horrendous and almost 2 hours for the signature Dolphin tube slide. Needless to say I didn't bother. The Rapid lazy river was good though and obviously queue free as you just waded in from the side. In summary I would say they have lessons to learn still about managing the queues to make this a more enjoyable water park and I was disappointed with Aquatica.

Food - Texas De Brazil - wow! What a great concept and superb quality. The salad bar has to be seen to be believed and then you can have as much top quality meat and steak as takes your fancy. I can't say it was good value as the original bill came to $165 for 2 adults and 2 kids with just soft drinks and 2 beers! Thankfully I had picked another tip up from here and joined the TdB loyalty club via email and had a voucher emailed to me for a free dinner to celebrate our anniversary (how fortunate that date fell during our trip:blush: ) So that took a full $45 off the bill. Kids were half price as well.

Food - Village Tavern - only called in here on spec for our final meal after a trip to the Mall at Millenia, what a good decision. It was a lovely meal in a clean and upmarket restaurant at a very reasonable price. Will definitely return on the next trip. The one we went to was right off the I4 junction for the Millenia Mall, I presume there are others dotted around.

Food - Golden Corral - What can i say, food is good, quantity is bountiful, choice is unrivalled and the price is unbelieveable. At the one on the 192 I was asked how old our kids were and when I replied 9 and 12 was surprised to see that they still only charged us the kids price which is officially for kids aged 3 to 7!
They also didn't charge for any drinks as we wanted coffee and milk which are ordered at the table so the total price for a Sunday Brunch was $25 for a family of four. Beat that for value.

Food - I made an ADR for Konas cafe at the Polynesian. The food was OK but nothing special but the waiting staff were the only ones in our entire trip that I found to be less than pleasant and amenable. Our waitress was sullen and another staff member looked at me as though I had just dropped off the bottom of her shoe when I asked where the rest rooms were. Shocking really when you consider that the tips they are on will be so much higher than their counterparts in the lesser restaurants because of the high prices charged in the first place. I also didn't appreciate the way that Disney felt the need to tell me what the expected tip should be on the bill and even worked it out for me at 18% and 20%. I left 10% because of the service whereas I never failed to leave between 15 and 20% elsewhere.

Shopping - The main brands that seemed to be worn everywhere were Abercrombie and Hollister. Both have shops in the main malls and the prices are less in dollars than you would pay in sterling in the UK at the sole Abercrombie shop in London. So stock up while you are there. Hollister were slightly cheaper for almost identical products IMHO.

Thats all for now, and to think I said I wasn't doing a trip report:rotfl:

Great mini trippie-thanks for sharing:thumbsup2 .
Shame about the departure+no sound on your tv.
We love the Golden Coral, cannot fault it.The choice is amazing.
We want to try Texas de Brazil when we go-there are 4 of us also-what is this voucher they emailed you?Can anyone get one?.
Sounds like you had a great time.x.

Thanks for the tips, I must search around about this dollar express, we use Dollar.

Have to agree with your views of Aquatica. I was surprised how the queues were not being managed well. As they started from a blank canvas and presumably have access to the most experienced consultants and designers in the field, it was a little disappointing. I loved the Rapids too - experience is even better when you wear a life-jacket.

Texas de Brazil - agree with you there too about the quality. We also used the vouchers from the website - would have been very expensive otherwise.

Golden Corral - sorry, I just don't get why people rave about it. Not somewhere I'd choose to go back to.

Will give Village Tavern a try next trip. Sounds good.

Just google for Texas De Brazil to get their website and then register your email address for offers to be sent to your inbox. There will be an option to add your anniversary and birthday dates, just make sure you enter a date that will be just before your departure date.

A few days before you leave you will be sent a voucher to print out for a complimentary dinner, ie a Buy one, get one free. Thats a full $45 saving and makes this very expensive restaurant affordable. Just don't go mad on the drinks they are on the dear side and its not a free refill kind of place!

Golden Corral - sorry, I just don't get why people rave about it. Not somewhere I'd choose to go back to.

The main attraction for me about GC is the huge amount of choice available and the fact its so damn cheap. My kids are very picky eaters and get bored of the chicken strips and burgers served at every other restaurant. At least at GC they are charged peanuts and get to choose what they want when they want, my eldest will often have a bit of Spaghetti, a steak, a pizza, a bread roll, some mashed potatoes and a bit of rice. Not all on the same plate but he can go and get a bit of what he fancies. I agree it is not the best quality food in the world but IMHO it is far better than Ponderosa or Sizzler who both seem to be better known amongst the British holidaymakers than GC. I usually find that the majority of GC customers are Americans (or Peurto Ricans or Mexicans!)

Will give Village Tavern a try next trip. Sounds good.

It was, very good. The one we went to for lunch was full of business people and well dressed shoppers, presumably from the offices and nearby mall but we didn't feel out of place in our 'holiday gear' and were made to feel very welcome, as you are almost everywhere in Florida.

We ate from the lunch menu and the bill for all 4 of us was less than $50. I presume it will be a similar menu but more expensive for dinner.

Orlando Airport - Usual huge queues at Immigration, took about 30 minutes to get through. Went to drop the cases for the second bag drop and was advised to take them ourselves on the escalator. Much better than having to wait at the second carousel.
We fully expected to be able to take our cases with us in January having heard of the changes, but we were made to relinquish them. Wasn't really a big deal, but hope it doesn't happen again in November. Can you describe exactly where the escalator is? Is it inside the Customs Hall, or just outside where you put your bags onto the conveyor?

Thank heavens for Dollar express, I went straight to the front of the none existent Express queue, produced my Dollar Express card (thanks to the tip from this site) and 10 minutes later was driving out the airport:worship:
I think we've now joined schemes for every car rental company out there! It's been a godsend several times.
Exactly the same thing has happened to us on more than one occasion, most notably when we'd booked a luxury category through Alamo a couple of years back. The guy at the desk tried to persuade dh to upgrade to the new Cadillac SRX for something like $1000. Er, no thanks. When we got out to the parking bay, guess what was the first vehicle we saw in the line of cars available to us? Yup! Well, we'll have that then, thanks very much!
Villa - stayed in a villa for the first time ever at the easterly end of the 192 by the Turnpike junction. Villas are the future for us, so much more relaxed and easier than spending a fortnight in a single hotel room, space and privacy for all equals a more enjoyable holiday
Even now that we've become DVC owners, an offsite villa is still our accommodation of choice.
Driving - Never really used the toll roads before and previously relied mainly on I4 as our main arterial route, my advice would be to use the toll roads wherever possible, the traffic is much lighter so journey times are less and it was usually only between $0.75 and $1.50 so it was an ideal way to get rid of loose change which I left in the car at the end of each day
Totally agree. We also enjoy getting off the beaten track and discovering all the alternate routes.
Thanks for the review. Several people back recently have been saying the same. As I can't swim, I'm not a huge fan of water parks, but I did think we might pay this a visit as it's new. Not so sure that will happen now.

We enjoyed our one time visit there, but I'm not sure I'd keep going back. The problem with the salad bar is that it's so good, it's easy to fill up on that and then not be able to do justice to the main event. In fact, they probably rely on that. I loved the lobster bisque.
Thankfully I had picked another tip up from here and joined the TdB loyalty club via email and had a voucher emailed to me for a free dinner to celebrate our anniversary (how fortunate that date fell during our trip:blush: )
:rotfl:
Funnily enough, we were celebrating something or other too! :rolleyes1

This is a new one on me and I thought I knew all the places to eat! :rotfl: I'll have to do some research.

The food was OK but nothing special but the waiting staff were the only ones in our entire trip that I found to be less than pleasant and amenable. We've had less than stellar experiences both times we've eaten at Kona Cafe. We've only ever eaten there for lunch, though, not dinner.

Both have shops in the main malls and the prices are less in dollars than you would pay in sterling in the UK at the sole Abercrombie shop in London. So stock up while you are there. Hollister is part of the same group as Abercrombie & Fitch and deliberately pitched at a lower price. Kind of what Gap is to Banana Republic.
Thats all for now, and to think I said I wasn't doing a trip report:rotfl:
Thanks for taking the time - I enjoyed hearing your thoughts. :thumbsup2

OK, I've done some research! ;) Here's the Village Tavern website for anyone else interested. Definitely looks like once to add to the list.

Wasn't really a big deal, but hope it doesn't happen again in November. Can you describe exactly where the escalator is? The escalator is right by the side of the second bag drop. After passing through Immigration and collecting your cases for the first time you go through the Customs desk and out the arrivals hall and where I expected to place the bags on the conveyor belt a staff member said we could just take them with us on the escaltor to our right hand side. At the top of the escalator it is just a short walk to the monorail.

They were putting some bags on the second carousel and this may be necessary if your case doesn't have wheels as you will have to dump any luggage trolleys at the bottom of the escalator and wheel your case onto the monorail.

Hi Keasden:thumbsup2

Think we were on the same flight... assuming you flew back on V76 yesterday?? On Bumble Bee??

We had three weeks and didn't want to come home... I cried buckets when locking the door to our villa... sad I know!!

Nice to hear your mini trippie...
I totally agree about Aquatica... we did queue for the Dolphin Plunge.. and no I didn't see one!! It is a really fast ride... and you have to be in the left tube to see one... the dolphins stay mostly on that side of the tank. Thankfully our DS saw two!!
The fast lazy river was great!!

We went kayaking up at Wekiwa and visited Cypress Gardens.. both new to us, but thoroughly enjoyable!!
Will post pics if anyone is interested?!

We find Manny's the best place to eat by far... and if you go between 4pm - 6pm they have a specials menu and happy hour for any drink (2 for 1). The only problem is that it is heaving with locals!! We always phone them from the villa to get our name 'on the list'. Sometimes, even at 4pm, they have an hours waiting time!! It is definitely worth a trip!!
Its a bit way out, about 12 mins south of jnt 55 (I4) on the 27 - but definitely worth going!! Trust me!

Tracy xx

Aquatica - the key letters in the name of this park are QU !!

I'm hoping BB and TL will be quieter as a result. We land a week on Sat.

Food - Texas De Brazil - wow! What a great concept and superb quality.

Thanks for that, looked on the website, looks good, and registered. :thumbsup2

Welcome back :)

We had a fab time at kona when we went :) hopefully you just got them on an off day !

Enjoyed reading your trip report ~ Thanx for posting.

Thank your for the report it was v. interesting....I love A&F it is sooo cheap out there compared to what we pay. I need to check out Hollister next time.

OK, I've done some research! ;) Here's the Village Tavern website for anyone else interested. Definitely looks like once to add to the list.

Thanks for that link Deb, the menu really appeals to us - need to fit that in somewhere...somehow ;)

Great report!! We've loved staying in villas too but for the sake of convenience we're staying fully onsite the next time with our baby daughter...I hope we don't regret it!

Thanks for such an informative report.

Couple of questions.

Where is the Texas de Brazil restaurant?

and

Can you enrol for Dollar Express then still go in that queue if car booked through Virgin?

My kids are very much into H and AF clothes. Practically bought the shop out last year.
