Hello All - While I've posted here a number of times, I hadn't fomally introduced myself. My name is Michael and my Wife Jane and our two girls live in Orlando just a few miles south of Downtown.
Now that the formalities are out of the way, we just got back from the Fort today. We arrived on Wednesday 4/30 and just came home a few hours ago. The weather was perfect the entire trip and I was surprised it wasn't as humid in the evenings as normal this time of year. That is probably atributable to the lack of rain we've had this month, so it made it very pleasant. At home we are normally in the pool late afternoon so we don't notice the humidity as much as when you're just hanging around the picnic table.
Sites
They have done alot of brush clearing as others have said so there isn't as much privacy on many sites, but with time things will fill back in with new vegetation and once again be plush.
Crowds
Being local we normally just go for the weekend, but this time we went in the middle of the week. I was suprised how many empty sites there were (we were in 1119), althought that all changed on Friday as expected. The campfire program was pretty deserted on Wed and Thurs with only the first 3 or 4 rows of benches taken, so Chip and Dale had an easy time of it!
We went to the Magic Kindgom on Thursday and Saturday and the crowds really weren't that bad. We did FastPass a couple of rides so we could keep the kids moving and not get tired too early, but in all it was very nice.
We took the girls down to ride the Pony's on Saturday, and my 6 year old DD is now above the 48" height limit. She takes Horseback riding lessons once a week so while she was a bit disappointed, she'll be riding her regular lesson on Thursday and took it in stride. My 4 year old DD did take her ride and my 6 year old got to lead her. In all in worked out OK.
We also did the wagon ride which we hadn't done in a couple of years. Took a nice sunset trip by the lake, then through the 200 loop, 1400 loop, by the campfire program and back to Crockets. In all, a nice quiet trip. There was some talk about the horse that broke its ankles during the Kentucky Derby just a few hours earlier and had to be Euthanized, so our driver was explaining to everyone about horses and how they recover from injuries. Pretty educational for the children on the trip.
Site Work
We rode around every loop in the campground during our stay and didn't see any renovation/survey type work going on. I guess most of that was completed the last few months as others have reported, so must just be final planning now.
Musket Mickey
I wish I had had my camera with me to post a picture, but I did find a Musket Mickey I hadn't seen before. Many of you regulars may have seen it so it's likely old news, but there is a Musket Mickey medallion pressed into each end of the Checker Board by the fireplace inside the Meadows Trading post. The paint is pretty faded, but it's still noticable. I hadn't sat there much so when my DD and I sat down for a game, i was surprised to see it.
Well, that's it for this trip. Another great time with Family and friends and we can't wait to go back on 6/5/08 when my DD's get out of school for summer break.
