My niece just had hip surgery and she will be recovering in the next two months. We leave in less than 30 days ,so,if you see a healthy looking 11 yr old on a wheelchair been pushed by her gorgeous aunt ;) ,don't flame us!!.I can see it now, people giving us dirty looks  , she would hopefully be able to walk with crutches by then, but, her Doctor wants us to keep her in a wheelchair. We will be at MNSSHP on Oct 18 and Epcot on Oct 19,so,if you see us and want to help us push her chair ,we will be more than happy!!!!

I've done the ECV thing with a friend who has a chronic illness - she looks healthy but the walking would tire her out too much if she didn't have the ECV to get her from point A to point B.

You do what you have to do and ignore anyone too "limited" to understand. Having a WC with you is more of a hassle if you don't really need one and anyone who would try it without needing it will find that out.

Enjoy your trip!!

Ignore those who give you dirty looks. They are the ones with the problem. Have a great trip.

I was young and very healthy looking when I first needed a wheelchair. I was too busy having fun to notice who was looking at me. :)

Have a wonderful time with your niece!!

wheelchairs in the parks are no different from the rest of the world: they are a tool for mobility and not a free pass. The advantage to using one is being able to get from point A to point B if you have limited use of your legs. Anyone who doesn't understand that deserves to ruin their own vacation by focusing on other people's business and having a bad attitude.
Bah to them, boo to them, don't worry about it, smile and get moving.
Hope your niece's recovery is a swift one.

I hope your neice has a speedy recovery. :D Do what you have to do and enjoy your vacation, don't worry about others. :D :D

I was a healthy looking child in a wheelchair too- I had Legg Calve Perthes disease as a child.

I doubt you'll get any dirty looks- anyone with any sense would know an 11 yo wouldn't choose a wheelchair in WDW! I hope you guys have a fantastic time!!

I only give dirty looks to teenagers who push each other thru the parks, running and switching places - LOL!

In all seriousness, I will be interested to see how things go for us this fall. We will be there with another family who has a child in a wheelchair due to cerebal palsy. I've read on these boards that Disney is wonderful in accomodating these people and look forward to seeing it in action. Our friends have never been to WDW before and I really want them to have a magical experience!

Hope your niece and everyone have a wonderfully magical time at WDW, I am sure you all will. And hope she is well real soon. Also, SueSue, hoping your friend's DD has a magical time also.

understand your concern as people can be down right rude ( been in that situation myself) and do not realize that everyone may not fit their personal "sterotype" of being limited ( maybe they feel unless you have 3 heads, you are ok)but nothing you can really do about "dundder heads"like that . try not to let it impact your otherwise fun time!

I went with my friend who has Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis. We wer both 20somethings and she was in the WC with me pushing. We got a few looks but you can't worry about that. We even got a comment from a CM!!! They were taking us through a special door for WC's and the young guy just leaned over to us and said something about ' yeah you really look like you need that' or something. We we're so floored we did not even think to complain. Just be prepared and have a great time

Wow,thanks for all the responses. We have to wait until october 4th for the doctor to give us the go ahead for this trip. When I first planned this trip ,she was a healthy 11 yr old who could run around the parks a couple of times. She is really looking foward to it,I do not have the heart to cancel the trip now.She is in wonderful health and we are not letting this "minor" inconvenience get in our way.I am buying her MNSSHP tommorrow ,because, I'm confident that she will be able to go.I already advise her that she will set the alarm off as she goes thru the check point at the airport, since, they put a screw on her hip.We are really looking foward to that

Mermaid02- You are so right ,no 11 yr old wants to be confined to a wheelchair on purpose.I hope people remember that!!:o

Thank You all for your great wishes, we expect to have a great time no matter what !! ;)

By the way, I'm still looking for volunteers to push her chair around. :p
