you can rent from another DVC member - you can borrow your own points from next year - or you can do an add on - it is your choice!

As spiceycat said, there are several options. The best route to go is to simply borrow from the next year, or cut your trip short by a day and bank the excess points for a longer stay the following year.

I have to believe that it's rare for anyone to use exactly their allotted number of points every single year. We all vacation during different seasons / different room sizes / different resorts over time.

To answer your specific question, no, you cannot simply pay DVC the difference. You can pay cash for an entire night, which often is a valuable practice for weekend stays, but DVC will not simply accept a cash payment for part of a day in lieu of the points required to book.
