Anyone out there that just purchased a small contract (say 50 points) to get there foot in the door and the buy transfer points from others to make up what is needed for what they want?

I see this as a happy medium - thoughts???

If you are going to rent points, you may as well put that money toward purchasing more points to cover your ressies. Makes more sense IMHO.

My thoughts:

You may have trouble finding members to transfer you the points you need unless you need a rather large number of them. Since we are only allowed one transfer per use year (either into or out of the account, but not both in the same use year), it is often difficult to find someone to transfer smaller amounts.

It could be difficult to reserve at 11 months (to get the higher demand units / resorts), because transfered points are supposed retain their original home resort and use year status. Sometimes it takes MS time to get that part right.

That said, I think the strategy could work for those willing to spend the time learning the system and doing appropriate "due diligence" before they send money to strangers.

Personally, I think the smaller contracts work better for people who use them to go every other year or every third year by banking and borrowing.

I think that CarolMN gave a good overview of the difficulties you might see. The advantage over pure renting of reservations... is that once you rent-in the credits into your account... you can control the entire reservation process. So yes... I agree with you that it is a happy medium.

Having said that... I tend to follow CarolAnnC's advice and buy more points :)

Two years ago, you would not have had a problem with your way of thinking, now I think you may. I ran a thread for several days, I needed more points for a certain property. I had a few offers for small amount of points, but I needed about 200 or more. With the one transfer rule, I had to turn down the small offers. I will search again next week. We need a two bedroom for weekend nights, I may just pay cash for the weekends nights. Might come out cheaper that way anyway. I only own 150 points at the resort we are wanting to stay at with my married children, with school schedules, it does limit me as to when we can travel with them.

For one or two trips, it may be workable. This approach is not a good option for routine visits long term. Now one could buy some now and some later when they had the money. Or you could stretch your points by paying cash for weekends, staying off property for some trips, or even getting a cheaper timeshare and trading to Orlando (or even to DVC).

Thanks - I was just mulling around the idea......see, there is really no real good reason that I haven't purchased DVC yet. All the stars are in line - we stay about 10-14 nights per year - we always stay in DVC - we have the money to purchase cash and the income to deal with the annual fees. Guess I am just cheap and now add it that an II trader that pulls DVC was just given to us.....well I am just trying justify things in my head. Guess it all comes down to not being part of the "in" crowd - but playing the game anyway through the back door. (renting points, II trade, etc) I was thinking a small contract would satisfy that "want". But, in the end - probably still not the best use of money (again coming to the cheap part of me - but I know someday they will get me - cuz I am just that kind of spontanous person when I finally do decide to open the bank account!).

Ok.....so anyone want to give me a REALLY GOOD reason to purchase now.....you know I am just looking for one!!!

Why not buy a smaller number of points to use in conjunction with your II trader. you get most of the member benefits and would come out much cheaper.
