This is the DIS this is not some other really strict forum board where bumping a thread, doubleposting, or sometimes posts that do not make alot of sense to everyone really matter. We do sometimes have trolls but all in all this forum-the Dis- on the whole is a pretty laid back kind of place.

The only real rules we do have here are NO PERSONAL ATTACKS....

Here are Pete's Rules taken from Terms of service:

Postings. Werner Technologies is under no obligation to review any messages, information or content ("Postings") posted on the site by users and assumes no responsibility or liability relating to any such Postings. Notwithstanding the above, Werner Technologies may from time to time monitor the Postings on the Site and may decline to accept and/or remove any Postings that contain:

Any unlawful, harmful, threatening, abusive, harassing, defamatory, vulgar, obscene, profane, hateful, racially, ethnically or otherwise objectionable material of any kind, including, but not limited to, any material which encourages conduct that would constitute a criminal offense, give rise to civil liability or otherwise violate any applicable local, state, national or international law.
Advertisements or solicitations of any kind that are not instituted and approved by Werner Technologies, Inc.
Messages posted by users impersonating others.
Messages that are considered outside the scope and topic of a particular discussion forum
Personal information such as messages which state phone numbers, social security numbers, account numbers, addresses, or employer references.
Messages by non-spokesperson employees of Werner Technologies purporting to speak on behalf of Werner Technologies.
Messages that offer unauthorized downloads of any copyrighted or private information.
Chain letters of any kind

Also alot of the boards here on the DIS are visited and posted to by children, please remember this when you are replying to a post.

And above all enjoy the DIS, find and share good, helpful information and HAVE FUN!

Good information, thanks for posting this!

Thanks for posting this. I got warned once when I double posted (bumped) a thread on another board (that I still love) so I wasn't sure the rules here, so I have tried to follow the rules from there on here.

Now I know I don't have to worry quite so much.

you're welcome.
Just thought it was relevant since we have alot of NEW DISers here.

Messages that are considered outside the scope and topic of a particular discussion forum

And even one of "Pete's Rules" is not strictly adhered to or enforced...because the DIS does allow some OT threads as long as they don't get "out of control" ;)

What is bumping anyway? Not sure what double posting means either. I'm new to message boards in general.

bumping is where you really do not post to a thread but you want it to move back up to the top of the forum so you use a smilie or just type bump.

Double posting is where you post to a thread and no one replys after you and you post again.

Did that make sense?

Actually what bugs me more is when people post the same question in multiple threads.

I try to skim all the threads in this forum, and to see the same question 4 times is just a waste of time. The bandwidth of my brain is limited, please.

Thanks Mal for the info. I've heard people use both terms before and I always hoped I wasn't guilty of it!

Never been a fan of bumping to be honest, in my mind if people want to answer what you have posted they will.

Bumping and double posting often strikes me as a rather idle and none productive way of inflating your post count.

I also agree with Jean, at least take time to read the other threads or do a search before creating a new thread.

I used to completly agree with thinking that bumping was not quite right, but that was when I was on forums that weren't too active.

You're probably right -- bumping on this only moderately active forum (VMK) is probably not needed. But have you ever tried to ask a question on the Community Board here? It'll get shoved down to the 3rd page within an hour or so sometimes...

(On the other hand, you might counter-argue -- what's so important about YOUR post that makes it more legitimate to be up on top, LOL?)

Ah the mysteries of forum etiquette...

Maybe we need a "Ask Miss Forum Manners..." forum?

There is no rule against bumping a thread, whether it's yours or someone else's, here on the DIS.

On the slower boards, such as here on the VMK board, unless your post got knocked to page 2 or 3, I don't see the need to bump, but there is no policy against it.

Out on the faster moving boards such as Community and Resorts, there is often very good cause for bumping a thread, and usually result in getting the desired responses! :)

Mal, Thank you for posting this. This was helpful to me, as a fairly new member, and I'm sure it will be a good reminder to others as well.
