Over the next few days lots of folks from this board will either be hosting or attending holiday parties in the homes of friends and loved ones..

Please remember that some states (mine included) now hold the host/hostess criminally and financially responsible if someone has been drinking in their home and then has an accident later on.. And this does not apply only to underage drinking - it is across the board - anyone drinking in your home..

Also many states have lowered the legal limit of alcohol consumption to a point that would be equivalent to two mixed drinks..

As a host/hostess you will have some difficult decisions in regards to how you are going to monitor the alcohol consumption of your guests - and how you are going to handle that responsibility when your guests are ready to head home..

As a guest, please keep in mind the possible consequences to your host/hostess if you drink more than the legal limit and then insist on driving home..

Everyone please act responsibily and stay safe!!!

And thanks for taking a moment to read this..

Luckily with all of my family (2 brothers, a sister, and my parents)living on the same street....we can walk home!!;)

Good reminder, tho, CAnn!

thanks for the friendly advice....my house is an alcohol free zone.. so It's not an issue, but i will pass this on to friends...

For those of you wondering, those laws are called "Dram Shop" laws, and C.Ann is right--they apply to ANYONE serving alcohol, not just restaurants and bars. In fact, I recently read a case wherein the corporate host of a company party at a restaurant was also held criminally responsible for an accident that occured as a direct result of alcohol consumption at that party.

Good reminder, C.Ann. Stay safe, everyone!!!

They can also be referred to as social host liability laws. I worked on a case that made the law stronger in Florida. :D

Wishing everyone a happy and safe holiday!

Thanks for the timely reminder! Here's hoping everyone has a happy and safe holiday.

Yesterday at lunch I had to run out to the grocery store and the guy in front of me bought $87 worth of wine and beer. The first thing I was thinking about when I saw all that was if he was going to make the people stay at his house or what.

I had no idea about the carbonation issue!

Me neither. But then again, I'm not a drinker. But that is something good to know.

All the more reason to host alcohol free parties or limit alcohol to a glass of wine with a meal and no refills
