We leave for BLT on Oct 26th to Nov 1st, and today I get a letter that I have been picked for jury selection on Oct 29th.

I've read everywhere to be exempted and a scheduled vacation isn't on there. Anyone been successful being exempt for a planned vacation?

Really panicking here.

It's just for selection.

When you go, and they ask you if there is some reason why you can not participate, you tell them that you have a vacation with family that is currently paid for and that you will not be reimbursed for your costs.

They will more than likely excuse you. I have been able to get out of jury selection, as well as other family and friends have, for this reason.

It is not an official exemption, but, they have others in a pool for selection that they can use.

In the case of the OP the date of the jury selection is in the middle of their already planned vacation dates

So sorry - that happened to me for our 2011 trip. I am from the US and not sure how Canada works, but they rescheduled mine for dates after I returned from my scheduled trip. I would contact ASAP and can't imagine they wouldn't work with you. Good luck!

It's not unusual for people to need to postpone/reschedule their jury duty dates.

Contact them ASAP, using the contact info on the summons, and ask to reschedule for a later date.

While you need a really good reason backed by documentation to be exempted from jury duty, you don't need this for rescheduling. As long as they get enough notice and still have enough people in the pool for your dates, you'll be fine.

Yes, they will accept a call or fax stating that you will be out of the country on the jury selection date. I went through the jury selection process in Ontario last year and found them quite reasonable.

it happened to me a few years ago. I received a letter to appear for jury selection on the date we were scheduled to fly out to Orlando. I faxed a letter requesting that I be deferred for consideration at another time. I also faxed a copy of receipts of the Southwest and Disney bookings verifying that the trip had been booked months prior. I received a response by way of a phone call (about a week later) confirming that I would not be required to attend (whew)! :cool1:
However, this year my husband needs to attend for jury selection next week. We have a trip scheduled for early December and followed this same procedure and asked that he be deferred to another date. He received a call and was told that he must attend. I'm trusting that perhaps he won't be chosen, or assume that the trial won't extend into December .... fingers crossed.
Wishing you the best and hoping for a positive outcome for you!

Just a quick note--if the trial is a civil trial, the judge will have a very good idea of the length of court (and jury) time required before the jury selection. Your DH can go to the selection with your tickets and show them directly to the judge if your DH's name is called as a potential juror.

This was my experience as well. Provide proof of travel dates and you should be ok.

Thanks for the information, my DH will be sure to take all of the documentation with him and hope for the best. He's happy to serve, the only concern was the length of time involved.
Thanks for taking the time to respond, it's really appreciated! :)

I always wonder what happens if you just don't go? Thee letter is not sent by registered mail so there is no way for them to prove you received the letter. Knock on wood, I have never gotten one!

Thanks everyone,

I'll be heading to the courthouse on Tuesday with my confirmations in hand hoping that works. I'll keep you all posted.

The same thing happened to my mom last may. She's a teacher and was taking her class away on a week long field trip. She just called the number on the summons and told the person her situation and they just asked her to pick a date. She ended up doing it a about a week ago at the end of september.
