junk mail, why so much, how do I get rid of it?

I seriously have 300 e-mails in my inbox, maybe 30 of them are important, I get SO MUCH junk mail! "Order Viagra, you won $5000 Walmart shopping spree, etc" Just non stop JUNK! I don't want all this junk mail and wish I could block it, but I still want my Borders rewards e-mails and Allears e-mails.
How do I block all this junk?

The first step is to be very careful with your address. Most of my friends and I have "junk" e-mails (yahoo or hotmail accounts) and "real" e-mail accounts. Anything you have to sign up for gets the junk account address. Only important things like friends, family, business and disney sites get the real address. You may have to go so far as creating a new account and using that one for important things if your current account is completely drowning.

One thing I did for my boss drastically cut down on the junk, but it is TEDIOUS. At the bottom of most of the spam e-mails is a tiny little greyed out link to opt out of future emails. Do a few marathon sessions of finding and clicking the opt out links, and it will help. Good luck.

This will help with legitimate businesses, but unfortunately not for spam. When you click on the opt out button on a spam email, what this does is confirm to the spammer that this is a real email address and they will add you to the list they give/sell to other spammers.

Nothing really works. I protect my email address religiously & spammers still find it. My internet service provider does a pretty good job of identifying spam & sending it to a specific folder but I still have to scan through this folder because sometimes real emails get mistaken as spam. But I really wish the providers could do more to end the crazy amount of spam we get daily!
