June 18, 2011 - 11 Night Mediterranean Sailing from Barcelona

1) Reaching the train station by taxi ( must be 20 €uro the ride for 10 minutes)

2) Reaching Pompei by train (now there is one at 9:41 a.m. that arrives in Pompei at 10:16 € 2,4 p/p) Visiting Pompei...walking and using wikipedia ad Guide :lmao: (priceless) Couple of hours at all must be enough. The tickets to enter the "Scavi" must be € 11,00 p/p).-

3) Reaching Sorrento by train departure fixed at 12:17 and arrival at 12:47 (€ 1,90 p/p)
Reaching Sorrento "Port" walking or by taxi (train station it's just 800 meters away from the port walking for 10 minutes you can easily reach it as you have almost 50 minutes before the "ship leave to Amalfi, any way a taxi can't cost you more than 20 euro)

4) Reaching Amalfi "by sea" leave at 1:35 p.m. and arrives at 2:25 (€ 11,00 p/p)
Enjoy the sea and get ready to come back...

Sorry mates, I made a terrible mistake the fifth step could easily be this one

5) reaching Naples (from Amalfi) with the "Metro del Mare".
You don't need to come back in Sorrento to take a train... The ship is the same but you can continue to "Beverello" that is the port where the Magic is... so you can choose to have the one starting at 5 p.m. (and that arrives at 7:10) or the second one departing at 5.40 pm and that arrives at 7.45 in Naples. The cost is "just" € 15,00 pp and you can have a wonderful trip watching the Coast and the Vesuvio from your boat.-

For Julie, WAR EAGLE!!!!. We will be at all the home games and DH can't wait. My DS sent in his application for Auburn last week, so hopefully this time next year he will be an Auburn Tiger.

Our flights have been booked using miles. We leave from Atlanta on Delta at 9:50pm on June 16. We do have a layover for about 1 1/2 hours in Amsterdam. Hopefully we will be able to adjust to the time. Our return flight leaves the morning after we arrive back in port. This flight will be non-stop.

I wish we could travel to London or Paris but DH is pushing it to be away from work for this long. He will have to do a bit of work while we are away as he is the CFO of the company and is the only one allowed to do certain tasks. As for me, I have a great boss and could take the extra days off with no problem.

Still looking over excursions. I think we will stick with all Disney excursions, just because its easy.

There you are, Allison! War Eagle to you, as well! DS is just about to go crazy getting ready for the season. We went to fan day for his birthday last weekend and got to see the new basketball coliseum. Good luck to your son on his admissions.

We're going to be on the 10:00 flight out of Barcelona on the last day of the cruise. I'm getting ready to book it this morning. Hope that getting to the airport is as easy as everyone says!

Just wanted to say hello and WDE!

Julie

Us, too, with the exception of Pompeii and possibly Rome.

We have a flight out before the recommended 12:30, too. It's American BCN to JFK at 11, I believe.

Just took the plunge and bought airline tickets -- ATL to London; Barcelona to ATL. Need to book the London to BCN leg, but since we're going with British Air for that, I'll do it next month after I take care of paying for this round. Thought I'd come here and seek support. :-)

Julie

We are on the same flight out! From what I've read on the boards, should be no problem getting to BCN in time for the flight.

Very cool! It will be fun to have a friendly face on the same flight.
And that's what I read (about the time), too.

Just bumping us up! :thumbsup2

Hope everyone had a great holiday weekend. The kids are back in school so its time to start planning again. :cool1:

I have our family on the late seating (DDs 5 & 9) at this point. My original thought was that I thought we'd be in ports late and won't want to rush for dinner.... Now I'm worried it's going to be too late on this particular itinerary.

What are you planning? :confused3

Hi Everyone,

We just took the 10 day Disney Med. cruise (August 18 -28)
(DH, DDs 6 and 8 and I) It was fabulous!!!! :cheer2: We were on the main dinner seating (6:00) 2DDs 6 and 8. We experienced most of the ports on our own and missed only one dinner, the Civitavecchia port (Rome), but that's what we expected since there is so much to see there and it takes an hour by train. We liked to have dinner and then go to the shows. If I remember right they did adjust the dinner times a little bit when it was a long port day, making dinner time 1/2 hour later on a few of the days.
We had such a great time we booked the June 18, 2011, 11 day.
The extra sea day after Rome will be nice. Now that we know the ports better our experience should be even better!!:yay:

Welcome! It will be great to have an experienced Med cruiser on the thread. Hope you won't mind answering a few questions as they come up. :) Glad to hear you had such a great time!

Welcome Kim! Thanks for the information. I think I will try to change our time to the early seating. It must have been a fabulous experience for your family if you're doing it again.... great to hear. Any tips you have would be appreciated as our DDs are close in age.

We have the late seating for dinner, and our kids will be 6 (DS) and 8 (DD) at the time of the cruise. We went on the Eastern Caribbean in June 2009 when DS was 4 and DD was 6. We had the late dinner seating then as well. It worked out great, and I can't imagine having the early dinner seating on any cruise, especially this one (although it should help if the early seating times are pushed back a bit for the Med cruise). We really liked the format of seeing the shows first and then having dinner. DS had a little bit of trouble staying awake for the late seating, but a couple of times he just stayed in the kids' club (and it was amazing how a kid who couldn't stay awake for dinner was full of energy at 10:00 or 10:30 p.m. when we would go to pick him up). For this next cruise, I think both kids will be fine with the late seating. I just can't imagine having to rush back from a full day's activities in the ports to try to freshen up and be ready for dinner at 5:45 p.m. But I know there are strong feelings on both sides of this issue. I just happen to be a big proponent of the later dinner seating. Even though June 2011 is still a ways off, it is starting to feel closer and closer. My birthday is coming up, and on that day it will be exactly 9 months to our sail-away date. :yay: Considering I booked this cruise at 21 months out, that is progress. :)

Thanks for your perspective. I was reading a trip report that talked about seating times being pushed back on the Med cruise and the late seating was 8:45 on night. That made me a little nervous. For our New Years cruise we are doing the late seating. I plan to try to keep the kids on west coast time so they can do their first real midnight New Years. Since it will be mostly a beach type vacation I think it will work. With the Med our days will be much more full....

I was on the DCL website today and the seating times for Med cruises are slightly later than other itineraries.

I just wish my crystal ball weren't in the shop.

We're doing the early seating - we'll have DS 7 and DD 5. We're pretty early eaters in general, and I can't see the kids making it until 8 before eating. As someone earlier posted, we'll probably miss dinner as a result on the Rome day, but I think it'll work much better for my kiddos and give them the energy boost to be focused during the shows.

Welcome Kim! I'm really excited there are so many younger kids going, before I started posting here I was really worried that all the kids would be older but we should fit right in.

Can't believe we're almost at the 9 months mark - yippee!

We just booked our flights yesterday! Now it seems much more "real"!! We are flying from Toronto into Zurich, Zurich to Barcelona; returning Barcelona to Frankfurt, then back to Toronto. We booked on points (still had to pay almost $1,100.00 in fees and taxes), but at least we were able to book first class.

Guess I should start planning excursions. I really have no idea what I want to see except in Rome.

WRT to dining, I think we are doing the early seating, but I'm going to have to check with our TA.

Does anyone know if we can look up our reservations on the DCL website? We have only done 1 DCL cruise so we are newbies!!

We are thinking (well we have already discussed it with the kids so that means that the decision is mostly made up :) ). Our travel crew will be me, dh, and our 2 kids (ss-12 and dd-6). They are extremely excited b/c dh and I went to Italy for 2 weeks last year by ourselves and they are now dying to go.

By any means, dh and I did our traveling from city to city in Italy by Train, it was quite easy and we bought the tix while we were there (the difference in price for a first class ticket was neglibable and well worth the expense).

I guess I will see you all there if we "take the plunge."

Wow...2 weeks traveling through Italy w/o kids.....That would be fun!!!
It's incredible how easy the train system is in Europe.

Yay...just placed my deposit. I cant believe it. The kids are so excited.

Glad to see that you've taken the plunge! It's a really fun cruise and the kids will have a blast.
Actually, I think it's the perfect way to travel with kids

Hi everyone - we've just booked on the cruise :cool1:. We did the Baltic cruise on the Disney Magic in June & loved it so much we couldn't wait to do it again!

My DH and I are bringing our 2 kids (DD 10 and DS 5). We live in Brisbane, Australia, so have a bit of a hike to get to Barcelona. Flights are booked, just have to book Barcelona hotel, will go and check out Casp 74 based on all your posts so far. Very excited:banana:
