Has anyone started a July No Buy Thread?

I just finished hosting two young relations on a little vacation, so really need a no buy month starting today! I'm going to try for 15 no buy days this month.

Also, I'm not counting gas this month. It is a recurring bill for me - I have to get to work and back and about 95% of my miles are to-from work. Also not counting pet food/itmes, as that is pretty much a set item.

So today:
1st thru 5th - trust me, they were BUY days! ;)
6th - 9 on a camera dry bag.
7th - $126 groceries, $17 crocheted lace cuffs for my re-enacting outfit
8th - (projected) $50 groceries at Sam's Club

I would love some no buy days this month...but with D's birthday and having to get her ready to go back to college, I don't think it will happen. Maybe I can work some in after the middle of the month....

I'm in on this. I even wrote myself some guidelines:

*Keep walking past those enticing "clearance" displays at the front of the store.
*No visiting LL Bean daily--ya'll have no idea how hard this one is for me!
*No alcohol purchases--drink only what we have at home.
*No shopping just because I'm bored or shopping as an activity. Shop only for what we need.
* Ask myself before each purchase--do we really need this? Focus on what that money could buy (vacations!)
*Seek out free events/activities for family fun.
*Stay completely away from favorite used book store.
*Don't feel guilty about paying for some fun or perks--just consider it first.

July 1: $0
July 2: $0
July 3: $168 --needed a new tire :sad2: and oil change/tire rotation.
July 4: $0
July 5: $10.15 fresh fruit/2 gals. milk; $5.38 for Kindle book (this is what I'd consider a slip-up. I found a book and bought it without even thinking twice. Need to work on that. )
July 6: $36 groceries; gave $5 to DD for drink at fair.
July 7: $70.89 Sam's Club
July 8: $0
July 9: $30.41 Sam's Club
July 10: $5 tortilla chips at Menards :rolleyes1
July 11: $10 gift
July 12: $39.31 groceries; $4 snack at Blues Festival
July 13: $6.35 sunglasses
July 14: $21 lunch after church
July 15: $175.09 groceries**
July 16: $800 timing belt and new water pump for van :sad2:

**Monthly employee day. Our teen son works at a grocery store and he will get 10% of this amount back in a check at Christmas time.

I pledged no new clothes for a year.
My dd looked at me like I had 2 heads the other day when I put clothes back on the rack at Shopko.
I am going to try the no buy.
We made it through the Holiday weekend without eating out.
I made big suppers, had lots of pizza's.
I did buy a single season pass at our local village pool. $45 for July and August, It was way to cold to swim in June.

Those are some really good rules!

Okay, I'm going to come up with mine:

*No clothes buying
*No new hiking gear, gadgets or clothes
*Eat out one time a week
*No book buying, even from the thrift store, unless it's due to a return I have to make next week.
*Cut back on soft drinks
*Eat out of the pantry and freezer as much as possible
*No new hair clips/barrettes/pretties. (Bobby pins are okay, since I kill four or five every time I use 'em and it's $1 for 100 at the grocery store!)
*No random monetary donations. I will write down the information about the cause and carefully consider it until August 1st.

This is my first time joining a no-buy thread. We have out of town visitors 2 weeks in a row this month, so I know we will be spending...this week my husbands 3 nieces will be staying (unexpected....his Sister tries to dump them off on anyone who will take them). Since they will be coming up to our house to swim each day, his brother and SIL will be here daily too. Next week it's my mom and stepdad. I'm hoping that this thread will give me some accountability to keep things in check. We just spent $178 yesterday on a deep freezer to help us preserve some of our garden produce and are going to Sam's club today to stock up on food for the guests.

. I have gotten into the habit of downloading a bunch of free ebooks so that I always have something good to read. I post them on my blog so others can get them too. Also did you know that you can review books for NetGalley for free? That helps me from buying on a whim. I also trade on Paperbackswap, but you do have to pay for shipping your book out (usually $3 or less.)

I will definitely check out your blog and recommended books. :cool2: I'd say 95% of my Kindle books were free. This month I broke the norm because we read a good novel for Book Club and when finished I wanted to get the second of the series right away so that's when I bought it. There are at least three more in the series, so maybe I'll see if the library has them.

Good Luck everyone.
