July 20th, 2011 – 10 Night Mediterranean "Mickey's European Explorers"

Our kids will be 5 and 7 by then - i'm a little nervous about the length of the day trips for my 5yo, she has such short little legs for walking :rotfl:

!!

May be a careful choice of excursion would help - don't forget there will be many adults who are not that good on their feet too !

Remember - you don't have to do any/all the excursions - there is plenty of fun on board the ship !:goodvibes

You don't know my husband! I took him on his very FIRST trip to WDW when he got his MBA and we covered all of the Magic Kingdom on the first day. (I didn't think it was possible...) Its reining him in that will be difficult!:rotfl:

We've both been to Florence so we'll likely explore Cinque Terre and La Spezia, instead. Rome will be the only really long trip, I think....

As for the rates, looking at another cruise there was a flat out difference in rates btw GBP and USD - before taking the exchange rate into consideration. Wasn't sure if non-US cruisers booked with a US travel agency - thanks for the info on refunds/onboard credits.

I'm a planner, so I need to get the cruise booked so I can start with door decorations and everything else!!!!!

Welcome aboard Mommy Grrl and family. The more the merrier! If you are a door-decorator you might be keen on joining the fish extender. Let me know and I'll add you to the list on our website.

I would be happy to join in if there is a luncheon and gift exchange. Shall we plan this for the first day at sea so we can meet one another? Anyone up for tea at Palo? We may also be interested in Barcelona tours if we don't fly out on the 30th. There is a flight at noon; do you think we'd make it?

I've started a countdown with the kids - they are humouring me. I've put a map up on a posterboard and each day I add a little factoid about the ports of call. Mostly I'm amusing myself. The boys are mostly interested in how many 13-15 year olds will be aboard. But I have captured their interest with some of the podcasts I've downloaded and they have been asking questions about activities and excursions.

Happy Thanksgiving to my fellow Canadians.

Good plan for the ladies lunch on the first day :thumbsup2

Whether its for ladies lunch, or just a general DIS meet, I wonder if we could get the private room at Palo ? - I've always wanted to go there !! Anyone know how to book it ??

My DS will be 14 at the time of the cruise - they are welcome to PM me for his email / facebook address, if they are keen to get to know someone before they go. :)

Hi All!

I would definitely be up for a ladies lunch/tea too! My son will be 13 when we cruise and I could also send you his details for Facebook, it would be nice for them to have some ready made friends on board, particularly as he has 2 younger sisters! We have decided to extend our stay in Barcelona as Easyjet no longer flies daily to Newcastle, so we are having 2 nights before and 3 after, we were just too nervous to fly out on the day we leave, too much worry about fog!:confused3

Eeek !!! Fog in July !!!!.

.....that River Tyne has alot to answer for LOL !!!

....just hope the Mersey isn't going to give us any similar problems !

... and also details of our cabin numbers 7620 and 7621, to your general list plus the fact we are late dining. :goodvibes

Also is anyone interested in doing a ladies lunch, on a sea day, with a ($10 -ish) gift exchange game ? :confused3

We will be neighbours - my Daughter and I are in 7622 :) And yes, I would be interested in a ladies lunch - great idea... I live on the Staffordshire/Cheshire border so may well not be a million miles away from where you are in the real world too!

Also, if you do decided to get together at the Trafford Centre (or anywhere else for that matter) for a 'pre-meet' count me in! :thumbsup2

Wow ...that's spooky !LOL !!

We live in Audlem, South Cheshire.....:goodvibes

Well I have had a busy weekend :rolleyes1

...just booked Easyjet flights for a long weekend in Lisbon for beginning of May 2011 - My DH did not join us for the Dover- Barcelona cruise, and so I really wanted to go back there with him.:)

....plus, just booked a week in an apartment in Collioure, in Southern France for late May/June half term.
Its supposed to be a cheapie break ....but unless Ryanair can deliver some good no frills flights, later on this month, its going to turn out to be anything but  !

Anyone else got other holiday plans to share ?

Anyone else got other holiday plans to share ?

We have a long weekend in Menorca the week after next - I know the weather might be a bit hit and miss, but it's got to be better than here!

We've got a busy december too... Off to Disneyworld at the beginning of the month  then home for 2 weeks before we go away for Xmas, we will be crusing in the western caribbean on the Thomson Dream - I know it's no Disney ship  but I'm sure it will be fine! :goodvibes

Hi all,
Went to Disneyland Paris last weekend for Halloween. We didn't like it as much as previous editions but still had fun :-)
Talking about other vacation plans... We're going to Barcelona in 3 weeks and Gran Canaria in March. And off course Disneyland Paris about once a month :)
We'll arrive at Barcelona the day before and stay till the Thursday after. We plan to go to Sitges after the cruise. Any advice on hotels there?

Hi

Welcome Mommy Grrl. Where in Wales are you? We have friends in Pemrokeshire and are often over there.

Regarding the booking, I have previously booked direct with DCL, we used to have a travel agents, so got in the habit of booking direct, and getting discounts, but we have closed that side of the business now, although still sometimes get offers through! On our last cruise we booked on board and transferred to Dreams Unlimited. I must admit I was a bit wary, having always had control, but wanted the on board credit they give.

Well I am pleased to say that they have been really good and it saves me ringing the states to add or change anything. I can still see the booking on the DCL site, my only problem is impatiently waiting for a reply when I have asked for something, but it is well worth the little bit of credit back!

Try Iglu, and ROL, both preferred agents, a local TA will not be able to give the reductions that the big booking companies do. I did play Virgin and Iglu off against each other on a previous cruise, both matching the other, but then an offer came through on DCL, so I went direct again - also Iglu customers seem to get good free upgrades, but that may be just coincidence.

As Jdybnsn says, no one seems to know if the $/£ price is a set price or a changable to exchange rate price on the website, however, forecasts for the $ look to be good, so may be worth booking in $. It has been going steadily up recently.

It sounds as if everyone is jetting off in the near future, we were thinking of going away in October half term, but looks like our friends are coming up from Wales, so we may go to Blackpool with the kids for a day!!!!:rotfl2: (only the locals will know how funny that is!!!).

We have booked skiing for April, just a week's break, maybe get another short break in before Christmas we have a lot of airmiles to use up, but they don't make it easy to use them!

Jdybnsn we love Lisbon, have been there loads of times on cruises and always find something else to do/see.

Still not booked the flights - not sure what I am waiting for!!! Definately going the day before, Novotel have a room for £83, which I thought was good for the one night for all of us, including breakfast.

Re. Ladies lunch, sounds good, we had the private room on our last but one cruise for our meet thread. Someone booked it for us all, they needed our reservation numbers to enable them to book it, they just spoke to DCL direct and gave them the numbers, I am not sure if there was a minimum number or not. However, it isn't a large room, it was pleasant, but not easy to chat to everyone, as it was a long table, round ones are always a bit easier - maybe we should move around every course (a la the Mad Hatter), then you get to chat to different people!

Kate - we are living in Hay-on-Wye - it is Herefordshire, on the Welsh/English Border. Funny enough, we are heading to Pembrokeshire for half-term:rotfl:

Have just received a quote from DreamsUnimited, waiting to hear from DIS.
Does anyone have thoughts about room 6040? Its Port, which I wanted, but a bit Starboard for my liking....but I've never been on this particular ship, so I don't know the pros/cons.

Silly question - but the top bunks have siderails, right? I'm pretty sure I remember them from my Carnival days (or we would have fallen out at night after being well overserved) My 6yo has been rolling out of bed lately.... :confused3

Haven't begun to sort out flights yet but hoping we can catch something from Birmingham or Cardiff....we are hoping to arrive a few days before, most likely Saturday or Sunday...and I THINK we are going to surprise the kids with the cruise portion (can you imagine the looks on their faces??!!!!) We went to Disneyland Paris in April and they have been begging to go back.

Hoping there will be a few kids Sam and Maddie's age - looks like there will be a lot of 7yo girls and slightly older boys!

Willem, how do you like Gran Canaria? We went to Tenerife last February and are considering going back, but not sure if we want to go there or another island. Another trip I have to get a move on planning....grrr.

Keever, go ahead and add me to the Fish Extender. I can't sew for anything but I'm good at ebaying!!! I need to find the FE thread as I have no idea what you actually give for them. Hopefully I'll have room in the suitcase as I'm going to have to sneak in a bunch of Maddie's princess dresses. Do you know if they are ridiculous on the ship? We didn't buy a new one at DLP and then she had a massive growth spurt...so they are all getting a wee bit tight. Oops.

So excited. How will I ever keep this a secret? That is what my countdown ticker SHOULD show - how many days I kept it a secret from my kids!:lmao:

Depending where you meet before the cruise, I might be able to make it, too!

Hi Keever,
Yes, you may add us to the website, and we'd like to be on the fish extender list too. I've been crazy w/ work so haven't been on here lately, but am starting to get very plannish over excursions and such. We are thinking of flying to Germany first, DH is retired military, stay at the military hotel there for about a week, then transport to Spain. I don't want to be jetlagged on the boat. I want to enjoy every second, and won't if I'm tired and grumpy. Ladies lunch sounds fun, my mom and I will love it. This is going to be a great trip, I cannot wait !

Hi

I know Hay well, we used to go to the Pony Sales there when I was a teenager and once or twice to the Festival. I was brought up in Gloucestershire, so it wasn't a million miles away.

As for your room, you may find this useful, if you haven't already found it
http://www.wdwinfo.com/wdwinfo/cruise-new/roomlist.cfm

The Magic and the Wonder are the same layout, so what is said for one, usually applies to the other. Personally I think that Port is the best, when you dock in Malta and Tunis, the boat is that side and it was interesting to see everything going on (camels and drummers). These are the only ports that it makes much difference. However, looks like we are Starboard at the moment.

Best of luck with the secret, I did think about trying to do that with my dd, but she knows we booked on board and everyday keeps asking when we are going, she is now asking to go to the 'hot' Disney (the 'cold' one is DLP!), but somehow don't think we will manage to squeeze that in!!

By the way, they do have dresses on board, they are far nicer than any you will buy in the UK, however, they are also a lot more expensive. Luckily my dd, who is just 6 isn't into princessess, so haven't got that to worry about!

Looks like your children are either side of dd in age, she coped fine with the walking, so I wouldn't worry too much, if she gets tired, you will just have to stop for an icecream!! :thumbsup2

Well, we go to Playa del Ingles. The town itself is really tacky but the hotel is fantastic (Riu Palace Maspalomas) and we like the fact that the place is so open to gay people.

Wow!

Lots of activity on the boards! Mickey’s European Explorers rock!

I’ll update the website to include newbies to the fish extender. I can also add DISmeet information.

How about a general meet in the lounge on debarkation day. On my last cruise (my only other cruise ever!) this is what we did. It was a drop in around 3 pm, and everyone said hello, the kids made pacts to meet at the kids’ clubs later etc. After an hour, everyone dispersed to get ready for the Lifeboat Drill. I volunteer to make nametags. I could put together a signature hunt or similar activity to keep the kids busy and facilitate mingling.

We can also set up tea at Palo for the next day at sea. I can look into booking this, but if someone else has a gold or platinum Castaway Club status they would be able to book ahead.

If the UK members decide to meet somewhere, I can also post those details. Let me know.

Mommy grrl – check out our website below. You’ll find details (Fish Extender 101) and how to make a no-sew fish extender. (Although the ebay ones are beautiful!) My son tells me there were siderails on the top bunk, and I remember a ladder as well. I think it’s great that you are keeping the cruise a surprise for your kids. Be sure to catch their expressions on video. (You can upload it to Disney and maybe they’ll use it for their new “Start the Memories” ad campaign.) When my boys were 7 and 9 we woke them up at 3:00 am to tell them that the van was packed, we were off to the airport and catching a flight to Disney. The excitement!!!!! Two days into the trip my youngest was still asking, “Is this a dream? Am I really here at Disney??!!!”

Yay! I just paid for the cruise, we're officially going!

Keever, you can add us to the Website:
me, DH, DS (7), DD (5)
Room 6040
Main seating
Hay-on-Wye, UK

I'm so flipping excited! We're going to arrive in Barcelona on the weekend, I think. I just have to figure out how I hide the princess dresses, pirate shirts and door decorations in the suitcases so they don't find them!

Woo hoo!!:yay::yay::yay:
