**July 2024 Check-In**

Yes, it's worth it. Big difference from WDW is everyone has to scan in to the parks before being able to make LL selections. All of you should scan in the park in the morning then leave until you're ready to come back in the afternoon. This will allow you to make LL selections before you go back in the afternoon.
Thank you--we are staying at DLH. I know the parks are smaller in CA. Is it easier to scan in (take less time than WDW?). What you suggested above would take a lot of time for WDW and defeat the idea of "lazy" morning? (Not being sarcastic, just trying to plan and appreciate your response! :))

The parks aren't really smaller, there's just two of them within walking distance of everything. There's about as many rides in the two parks as all of WDW combined. I guess Epcot is bigger, but that's kind of a unique park.

DLH is farther from the park entrance, but the monorail is close and you have to scan in to ride the monorail. You can scan into the monorail, then simply turn around and leave back to your hotel without riding the monorail. This would require you to have a DL starting reservation since the monorail only goes to that park. You can then book LL for either park after 11 when hopping is allowed, if you have park hoppers. You will also have to go through security to get to the monorail.

You're correct, it will require some effort, so maybe not worth it for you to get Genie+. I'll allow others to chime in with opinions.

I can't speak from as much experience with never visiting until afternoon. We always do mornings, long afternoon break, then evening and closing out. I don't know if Genie is worth it for afternoons only. There will still be availability of rides, but only for a few hours.

I have no experience at WDW, but I would say have Genie+ woud be very beneficial to have in the afternoon if you were able to get up and get scanned into the park in the morning so you could start stacking rides. The afternoon lines are all long waits usually so if you stacked rides while you relaxed at your hotel, you'd come to the park being able to do the LL and have a limited wait. Like OlliePop27, I usually rope drop just because you can get so much done in the morning, although I am so not a morning person, just for DL I am. :D

This is pretty brilliant though! So we don't even have to go into the park, just scan into the monorail? That would be awesome! Thank you so much for this tidbit!! :flower1:

Absolutely, you're welcome! You can look at a map and see the monorail station in Downtown Disney is very close to DLH. Very short walk. Once you scan in, you can start booking LL for when you arrive later in the day! As a hotel guest, you can start scanning in at 7:30 and booking LL for 8:00 and after. You can scan in at a later time too, but the earlier you do it the more LL you can get.

The same rules apply as WDW about every 2 hours booking a new one and modifying LL. Just keep modifying for times later in the day when you plan to get there. Overall, there's lots of LL availability between the two parks. Certain things will start to sell out for the day by 3:00-5:00 (Space Mountain, Indy).

This is all so good to know!! Thank you so much!! I appreciate you taking the time to helping a newbie out! We are eager to see what Disneyland is like!

Go in with an open mind and don't try to compare everything to WDW. I think you will love it. The weather in July is certainly way better than FL.

How is everyone feeling about the closure with Hungry Bear and the walkway into Galaxy's Edge? Do you feel this will impact crowds? I'm trying to stay positive and go in with an open mind that it will be fine. Can't help but feel nervous about all what is going on right now though.

Hungry Bear has been a relative ghost town since Critter Country closed. Not too many people walk past Harbour Galley anymore unless they want to get to Galaxy's Edge. Galaxy's Edge has two other entrances (via Fantasyland and via Frontierland) so I don't think it will impact much more than it already has.

Blue Bayou used to be a great respite from the heat and crowds in a really neat space. Watching the boats float by was cool. On top of that, it was a decent value for the money. Entrees included soup or salad, bread, and the servers would dote on you appropriately for the premium price you were paying over counter service options.

But then even pre-pandemic, they increased prices dramatically and removed the first course inclusion. The meal now feels rushed and vastly overpriced. Servers have so many tables—and trying to turn them so quickly—it’s an impersonal experience. The portions have been cut back even further and the food quality looks and feels like cafeteria pre-prepared food. Objectively, the steaks at TGI Fridays are better. And on top of that they’ve cut back on air conditioning in big dark rides, so that it doesn’t even feel all that cool in there any more.

Sure, go if you’re a huuge Pirates fan or it’s a tradition… but for a first time visitor, especially if you’re someone who has been to the real New Orleans or goes out to eat with any regular frequency… stick to counter service at DL.
I have to say, I've been to the real New Orleans, which I LOVED, but it has nothing to do with The Blue Bayou, which I also love. You go for the experience, not the food, and you don't really have to be a Pirates fan to enjoy it. Go if you want a unique dining experience - WDW has nothing like it! - skip if not.

We are from PA and planning our first Disneyland trip for the beginning of July. There’s a part of me that’s a little sad because a lot of what I love about Disney World isn’t at Disneyland (mainly Epcot but some of my favorite rides, too), but at the same time I’m so excited to experience Disneyland.

Last night we were at a birthday party for one of my colleagues and I was talking with another colleague about our trip and he told me Disneyland ruined Disney World for him. After his trip to Disneyland he has no desire to return to Disney World, so after hearing him say that and now reading your post, I’m beginning to wonder if my Disney World days are over, lol.

Have a great trip!
Hopefully you will love both places for what they have to offer - I do. Grew up with DL (first went there about the 3rd year after it opened) but fell in love with WDW as well my first visit. I don't get to go to WDW as often, but I love being in that "bubble" (and staying at an Beach Club, where I can walk to 2 of my favorite parks and enjoy the best hotel pool ever, and at AKL where I can have my morning coffee with giraffes!).

On Sunday evening, Husband and I were reminiscing about our last trip (2022 for OBB), how we didn't get to do Chef's Counter at Napa Rose and that it had just been too long since our last experience there. As a fact-finding mission (fueled by an espresso martini or two), I called and left a message to see if they happened to have availability for our 17th anniversary, fully expecting to get told to pound sand because it was SO far after the opening date for reservations in July.

Anyway, long story short ... you can add me to the trip list! July 18-22, GCH. Guess I need to get some plane tickets, park tickets and a dining strategy! 8-)
Ooh if you like alcoholic coffee drinks, I highly recommend the Grand Candied Orange Coffee at Storytellers brunch...memorable imho! Happy Anniversary! (I spent my 50th anniversary at GCV - and am spending my 53th there, also - the "kids" love Oogie Boogie, it has nothing to do with us lol!).

Is there a place in Disneyland where we can get first visit buttons? We aren’t staying on property and in DW we always got buttons at our Disney resort so I’m hoping we can get them somewhere in the park. Also, I’m pretty sure it was on FB that I saw there is a graduation button at Disneyland. Does anyone know if that’s the case?

City Hall to the left when you walk in DL. Chamber of Commerce to the left when you walk in DCA. CM's may have them throughout also, like at the guest experiences kiosks throughout each park.

Official park hours, entertainment, and refurbs posted through 7/22. Still no info about July 4th special events or July 17th DL bday special events.

NOTE - The schedule for CHOC Walk on 7/21 has been posted. DL is opening late at 9:00 am and DCA is opening at 10:00 am. There is currently no EE scheduled on this date. Make note of this if you are visiting on 7/21. It is very abnormal for a special event like this to be taking place during July.

Does anyone have any suggestions on where to view the fireworks? Ideally, I'd love to watch them from in front of the castle, but I also don't want to give up three hours of park time by finding a spot early and waiting. Would we be able to snag a decent viewing spot a little further back on Main Street if we arrive about 45 minutes or so before they begin? Also, we want to stay in the park once the fireworks are over. If we are on Main Street is it going to be an absolute nightmare trying to make our way back into the park?

Every time I’ve been to DL, Main St has been jam-packed for the fireworks, clear back to Town Square. 45 minutes may not be enough time. And yes, until the crowds clear a bit, it will be hard to move back into the park (we tried to move from the north end of Main St through the Hub area toward Frontierland once, just two of us, and it was kind of scary). Plan to find a space and wait for a bit while the crowds clear.

I can finally confirm our plans to visit DL in July! I had a DVC room booked at DLH 31-July through 3-Aug but we are arriving on 30-July so I have a nearby Hampton Inn booked for our first night. We just booked our flights over the weekend.

From the Maryland/DC area we could get direct flights to LAX but I read so many good stories about the smaller airports that we going to fly into LGB instead, even though we have to make a stop (and actually 2 stops on one of the flights, but we don't have to get off the plane the 2nd time). I hope I'm not crazy, putting this much faith in SWA to get me to my connections.

We last visited Disneyland about 10 years ago with 3 small kids, so this time it will be with 2 adult kids. We are frequent WDW visitors, DVC and AP holders. I am still looking forward to this trip. We did the Walk in Walt's Footsteps tour on our last trip which was amazing.

Hoping the new 3-day pass offer will be enough for us to get everything done. Debating if we need Genie+ or even hoppers, but we'll probably opt for hoppers. Park days will be Wed/Thur/Fri and then we'll fly home Saturday. Arrival day will just be chilling at the non-Disney hotel but we should be able to do an early park day Wed since we'll still be on east coast time.
