Judge me!

Given today's crash in San Francisco, just wondering if anyone has a change of heart in regards to lap babies

No one had that information. We don't know if there was a baby on board. I just thought that given the discussion of risk factors that lap babies may encounter, and the accident, did anyone rethink their position that traveling with unsecured infants is safe. My opinion was already that if I could not afford a seat for everyone, we would not fly, do this simply reinforces my own position. I think if I was contemplating a flight with an unsecured child, this accident might make me think twice.

Oh, I thought you knew something. There are 2 confirmed dead, and they confirmed an infant was on board. Now I'm wondering about that infant. The only time I had to fly where I wasn't made to purchase a seat for my son, we got one for free anyhow because the plane was not full. I was thankful for not having to hold a squirming infant, as well as knowing he was buckled into a car seat. I hate flying.

Let's not tie a horrible catastophe into a debate on a message board.

And let's hope that it was just horrible luck that killed those two kids; that there was nothing the parents could or should or might have done that could have changed the outcome. Those poor parents are in my prayers tonight.

Oh, I see. I have been watching the coverage and this thread was on my mind. I realize these accidents are anomalies, but my God! They make me think. I also am not trying to trivialize this tragedy by relating it to our thread, and hope I did not offend anyone.

Alice- I honestly was not trying to debate this, I just thought that the discussion we were having was civil enough that we could talk about it. I have not seen this thread turn into one of "those" threads, so I figured that it was okay.

No, I don't think you did, and didn't mean to imply so.

I think that, if you remove the human element and make this a message board debate, it's a logical leap.

But that human element includes, as of right now, at least "dozens" injured and at least 2 fatalities.

On the news crawl, 2 of the critically injured are children. Wolf Blitzer also said a lot of people not accounted for

The 2 fatalities were 16 year old girls - not lap children.

But there was at least 1-16 month old lap child held by his father who survived. Read an interview.

So the tragedy really doesn't affect this conversation.

There are reports that there are several critically injured including an infant. I hope they all recover quickly.

This thread keeps getting better! popcorn::

Since I last checked in, OP has provided additional background that the kids have previously traveled on a 5 hour flight, are “good travellers,” and are “very well behaved,” which begs the question why the OP was wondering about Benadryl. I’m anxious to see how that plays out.

Another poster would never give a child Benadryl but nonetheless recommends the OP go on the trip carrying the child (contrary to pediatricians’ recommendations) because the poster has done it before and “it’s always been okay.” I wonder whether someone will attempt to quantify and compare the risks of giving Benadryl to a child versus holding a child in your lap on a plane. Why do we follow one pediatrician recommendation but refuse to follow another, when both could lead to serious harm to the child?

Another poster has introduced a new plotline: what if the 4 yo needs the OP’s help or attention? I did not see this coming!!

Where might this go next? The OP mentioned that the OP’s parents are also traveling, which makes me wonder where they’re traveling from. I predict someone will suggest that the OP should go directly to the parents -- saving both DL costs and airfare for the parents -- or that the parents should go directly to the OP. (The seeds for this rationale have already been planted but haven’t been fully articulated.)

I can’t wait to tune in tomorrow. :happytv:

Im dying ROTFL LMFAO. Love this.

Sorry if its already been stated, I skipped the last few pages of this thread. We flew with my DD when she was 3 months old. Her pediatrician recommended that we give her Benadryl beforehand to help with the fluid in her ears so she wouldn't be uncomfortable. I held her the entire 4.5 hour flight. Not fun but we made it. She suffered no ill results from the medicine (and didn't have trouble with ear pain from what we could tell.) Good luck with whatever you decide!

I will admit to not reading the entire drama of this thread. However, if OP is traveling abroad she should check to see if a bassinet is available on her flight. I flew the 12 hour flight from Istanbul to NYC with my then 3 month old and the bassinet was a life saver. She slept so well in it and never cried.
