JPEG file sizes

I'm using a mac-based browser to try and post jpeg photos. Tried "Attach files" as well as "Inesert Image" and I keep getting the notice that the "Uploaded image is too big". This is after getting it scaled down to 993 kb. Anyone know what the size limit is?

It used to be 1MB, but I think it's changed. I just copy & paste, or drag & drop photos and don't use the "attach" and "insert" options.
