So Josh McDaniels had a supposed gentleman's handshake to take Colts head coaching job after the Super Bowl. He was Offensive Coordinator for Patriots. Tuesday it's announced he's leaving Patriots and taking Colts job. Although no contract signed and 3 assistants were "hired" by McDaniels. Press conference was set for Wednesday after in Indianapolis.

Tonight he flops and stays with the Patriots because Mr Kraft sweetened the deal for him and McDaniels supposedly had reservations about moving his family.

Now it leaves 3 coaches he hired on staff at Colts with unknown coach. Colts left trying to find coach.

Would you ever do that to am employer? Is it career suicide ( although he will probably always stay with Patriots)?

Most people know Colts and Patriots history. Good riddance is my view. If his head wasn't fully there he can stay with the Patriots.

Pats fan here. And while I am glad he is staying, I am still wondering why the heck they would have even announced it or hired people before he signed a contract? Handshake or not, the Colts knew this was going to be big news so it just seems stupid to me to not have had it all locked up with a contract before making the big announcement.

I do understand not wanting to uproot his family, etc. and I'm sure there were things at play we don't know about.

And I also wonder...did he even know the Colts were going to make that announcement?

oh and let's not forget to mention that Luck's health may have been misrepresented by the Colts.

The words I'd use to describe him would get me some infraction pts here....

Total jerk move to do this....especially to bring over new assistant coaches that were already hired, only to back out.

Let him stay with New England.....if they promised him the Pats HC job after Bill Belicheat leaves, that's against NFL rules....not that they seem to apply to that franchise.

You must listen to too much sports radio who are all speculation & assumption. Indy jumped the gun, who announces something before pen is to paper. He had every right to back out if things were not as represented to him.

If there was no verbal agreement why did McDaniels not come out immediately and say there was no agreement? Why are there three people who he supposedly put on his coaching staff who are staying with the Colts?

Of course all of these stories are speculation from all over but one thing is they are all consistent.

It will be interesting I'm McDaniels makes a statement at some point.

I understand what you are saying, but I still think it was a foolish move to announce something like this without anything being signed first. The NFL is a big business and businesses should be smarter than that.

I am also not saying this because I am a Pats fan. Even if it happened with another team, I just think it was a premature business decision to open their mouths before it was signed. Anyone in the business field should know....get it in writing.

And you must be a Pats fan given your defense of him.

What was misrepresented to him by the Colts? Nothing as far as we know, but yet you want to accuse others of speculation and assumptions?

The only person misrepresenting anything is McDaniels. He picked his new assistants that the Colts hired. These coaches had come to Indy and started working. Some probably started the process of moving their family. McDaniels was scheduled to arrive for a press conference at 4pm today as of mid - day yesterday. Those are facts....not speculation or assumptions.

I can't say if he signed a contract, a promise letter or they just pinky swore but the Colts (and many others) clearly thought they had him as their new coach.

As a Broncos fan, the Colts should be celebrating in the streets. Sweatshirt Boy was the WORST head coach. Beyond bad. Even the news is reporting how bad he was in Denver. It was monumental how bad he was.

Colts, you dodged a huge bullet!

The misrepresentation is of the health of Andrew Luck. You want speculation that he is replacing the head coach that's ok but the speculation that Indy lied is not ok.

Indy was idiotic to announce him as head coach if he hadn't actually signed. He is allowed to change his mind.

you must be a Pat's hater

Agreed, but this comes back to my motto... 'Just because you can, doesn't mean you should.' I have no doubt that he has been assured the PATs HC job once BB retires, otherwise this is career suicide... regardless, there is no guarantee he is a successful coach (2nd time around).. some retreads are just that, retreads. He certainly appears to be a capable OC.. so let him be an OC..

There are NFL rules about signing contracts before their commitment to their team is over. Sweatshirt Boy was not allowed to sign a contract till after the Superbowl. (there was some speculation yesterday that the NFL was going to re-look at that rule during the off season since he screwed the Colts so badly.) They had a commitment from him. He was using Colt's $$$ to hire staff. He knew Indy was going to announce him as a head coach yesterday yet still did not say anything to them. He waited till after they made the announcement.

He is continuing his reputation as a huge piece of excrement. Good for the Pats to keep him. He will never work elsewhere in the NFL.

Guess you can look at team owners character you. Yes Jim Irsay had issues he took money he could have used to try to sweeten the deal for a man of no character and used it to pay for funerals of a Colts player and Uber driver killed by a drunk driver ( that's a sad political case).

The Kraft uses his money to sweeten the deal for a man of no character.

Even though no signed contract :

1. For at least a month it's been called a gentleman's agreement. McDaniels never once came forward and said that's false I'm staying with the Patriots.

2. McDaniels starts hiring people for Colts staff- now leaving these men thinking theyd be under him not knowing who they will be under. Obviously there are signed contracts on that end because Colts said they'd keep them (if not Colts showing integrity keeping them).

3. Even if Colts were stupid and announced early on Tuesday why did McDaniels not say anything immediately. Or the Patriots?

It wasn't speculation he was replacing the HC....he HIRED assistant coaches from the Colts budget that had been working for the team already. He was scheduled to be here for a press conference today. That takes it out of the realm of speculation. If anything the Colts should have gotten a signed contract first....I don't think the Colts are 100% blameless in this, but McDaniels is clearly not the most reputable person.

The Colts would not lie to the new HC over Luck's health. They may lie to the fans, media or even themselves....but the GM, HC, Owner are going to have accurate info on where they think he is (for the record, I don't think he'll ever play again....at least not at a good level, but hope I'm wrong). Nothing would be gained by starting off the relationship by not being truthful with the new HC about his franchise QB. Their misplaced optimism may prove wrong, but they aren't going to lie just to get McDaniels to come here.

Colts holding a press conference now. Before the even started talking about McDaniels they talked about the accident that killed Edwin Jackson (player) and Jeffrey Monroe (Uber driver). Said that is what is important and puts things in perspective. Colts are supporting both of their families now instead of harping on thevway they were treated by McDaniels.

They did not bash McDaniels. Stated they'd agreed to terms and he's hired coaches. They are keeping those people on staff. Said they were disappointed but moving forward.

McDaniels agent is saying he made mistake backing out. True colors shown by Patriots and McDaniels - but they've shown them before. Guess best revenge is they lost Super Bowl!

There is a reason for this. I only started this thread asking if people would agree to take a job and then back out.

Yes I do live in Indiana. Thing is I like Colts but I will root for any team except for one. You can only wish McDaniels well and put behind.

So you can agree to terms knowing you can't sign a contract until after the Super Bowl. It is clear there is some type of agreement as he HIRED three coaches from other teams to be on his staff. He didn't think about them when he backed out only himself. Those men were in process of moving their families. What is idiotic is if McDaniels never agreed to take the job why he/his agent or the Patriots didn't IMMEDIATELY announce the Colts didn't have agreement. Why did McDaniels call Chris Ballard the Colts GM last night and back out?

I'm a Patriots hater and proud to admit it. There are a few players on that team but Bill Belichick and McDaniels have shown their true colors and pack of integrity now.

Also McDaniels never asked to speak to Andrew Luck.
