Joseph Kosinski to Direct Disney's 'Tron 3'

Walt Disney Pictures has attached Joseph Kosinski to direct Tron 3, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed Wednesday.

Disney is understood to be eyeing a fall 2015 start of production for the follow-up to Tron: Legacy, which has not yet been officially greenlighted.

Kosinski was behind the sci-fi movies Oblivion, starring Tom Cruise, and Tron: Legacy, which was shot in Vancouver.

Studio operators in the West Coast city are in the running to possibly land the Tron 3 shoot, but no bookings have yet been confirmed, according to local players. Vancouver will host another sci-fi tentpole this year, Star Trek 3.

Toronto in 2015 will host production on Warner Bros.' Suicide Squad movie, based on the DC Comics property, and Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim 2.

Kosinski is repped by CAA and attorney David Matlof from Hirsch Wallerstein.

Tron-I lost money.

Tron Legacy was barely a success.

Tron franchise does not drive mass merchandising that I am aware of.

Why is this movie being made?

Legacy grossed $400 million worldwide just at box office. Add video rental and dvd sales after that.
Not as much as they wanted but far from a loss.

merchandising same scenario, not what they wanted in the end but the video game sales did alright
again far from losing.

Another movie if it follows the same as legacy, guess they have to ruff it with only a few hundred million profit.

.

Well, the movie's budget was 170 million. Add 150 million of advertising and distribution. From what I understand, a film is considered profitable as long as its box office doubles and surpasses the budget. I'd say that 400 million + DVD and merchandise sales are not that bad at the end of the day. Sure, it wasn't a huge hit, but apparently it made profit. Plus, they are opening a Tron coaster at Shanghai Disneyland. What better way to promote it?

If they manage to decrease the cost of the sequel, it could result in a decent blockbuster.

Yes, Legacy grossed $400M, but cost $200M.

Tron-I certainly did not justify making a sequel. The profit metric of Legacy does not typically justify a sequel either.

Not to be flip, $400M is OK, but truly nothing special. For instance, both John Carter & Lone Ranger grossed nearly $300M each. $100M more in receipts would have only mitigated their embarrassment, not made them successful enough to justify a sequel.

Ok - because they want to give us another chance to see Olivia Wilde in a black vinyl suit?? :)

I would see that. I really enjoyed Tron: Legacy however I'm not entirely sure where they could base the new film. I know they created a series of cartoons called Tron: Uprising.

I loved the last Tron. Just something about it I really enjoyed. I could see them working with the ISO's in the real world idea. Maybe splitting the movie in the Tron universe and the realworld.

Its an odd franchise for Disney to continue to push. I guess profit is profit at the end of the day but the 'pirates' movies have got progressively worse yet Disney are continuing with them because they make mega $$$

Star Wars will be a mega money maker for them. As will Marvel and Pixar. Disney animation is getting gradually better as are Disney's live action flicks like Oz, Alice, Into the Woods but theres still the odd stinker along the way

Part of the reasoning might be the changing and growing world market, particularly Asia. Also, Asia loves Sci-Fi more than the US and Europe. (Look at how Transformer's did in China!) Hence the Tron coaster in Shanghi. Therefore, they know that a 3rd will make more money than the 2nd. Also, there are some franchises that transcend initial box office and become loved. Tron qualifies.
