JonBenet would have turned 18 yesterday. It's perhaps a good time to reflect back on her case and how the media and public treated it. Her parents were vilified. Countless shows, talking heads, etc. pronounced them guilty (or at least suspicious). How many posters on the DIS knew they did it. When it started to become clearer that the parents weren't involved, some people were so committed to their opinions of their guilt they couldn't give them up. Others turned to new suspect they knew must be guilty. The new suspects were also tried in the media and by the talking heads; we now know they didn't do it either.

Have we learned anything from how we reacted to the Ramsey case? Have the TV shows and talking heads toned downed their declarations of "guilt?" Have we as posters decided to take more of a wait-and-see attitude rather than jump to conclusions?

I don't remember that it was ever "crystal clear" that the mother wasn't involved?

In July, the Boulder DA (Mary Lacy) declared the Ramseys innocent beyond doubt. I doubt she would have done so without proof. I know there are people who continue to write articles/blogs as if they are privy to some special, secret evidence and persist in implicating her parents and other family members, but I tend to believe the DA on this one.

No, we havent learned a thing. JonBenet isn't different than any other topic on here. When people make up their minds, it is made up. Debating with a brick wall is easier.

I still think the parents were involved in some way.

I agree, and I think anyone who tries to make a pre-schooler look like an 18 year old deserves to be vilified. I don't for a second think her family was innocent in any sense of the word.

:thumbsup2 As I said earlier, some peoples' "Karnack moments" are soooo much more informed than the opinions of officials that are actually privy to the complete and actual evidence in the case.

I will always believe the parents had something to do with it. There was never any evidence of an intruder. There was a very long ransom note, written on the Ramsey's own pad of paper, yet there was a dead child in the basement. None of it makes sense.

New DNA technology proved the family's innocence. IIRC, it was called "touch DNA". There were numerous articles in CNN and elsewhere. (Google "JonBenet Ramsey DNA Lacy", to get a list of articles.) I agree the note was certainly strange, but I also don't believe everything I read. I think beauty pageants for kids is demeaning, but I also do not think that means the parents were murderers, although one might easily consider one of the pageant attenders could be a possible suspect. There was always unexplained DNA evidence, but it was ignored. My aunt lived in Boulder and considered the police over their head in a case that was of world-wide interest.

Wow! 18?? Was it really that long ago? It sure doesn't seem like it..

Hopefully someday that case will be solved too - as was the Adam Walsh case recently.. :(

It is hard to believe she would've been 18. :( Seems like it wasn't all that long ago. I hope they find resolution to the case, and that justice will be served.

Was her mother buried beside her? I cant seem to remember if she was. I doubt this case will ever be solved. I always questioned if the brother had something to with it.
Hard to believe it was that long ago. I always remember this little girl. My DS was born the night she died.

I agree, it's hard to believe she would have been 18. I hope that justice is served. So incredibly sad.

I agree. I tend to go with the DA on this, since they have been looking at evidence for years and know the intimate details much better than we do. I hate how tabloid TV makes certain people guilty immediately. Every person is innocent until proven guilty. Once they are proven guilty, then let the vilification begin. O.J. was a noted exception, but that was proven later on.

I can't believe it's been so long. I actually remember this case, and I was about 9. It was so weird. I hope they solve it someday.

I agree, sad isn't it?

When this case was going on, there was a slight "blip" in the news concerning the Brother of Jon Benet "perhaps" having a hand in her death.....than, it was squashed.:confused3 I kind of still believe HE had something to do with it, and the parents covered it up.

Im not sure who did it, but its sad that the media could destroys life's with out proof

She would have been 18 back on August 6, she was killed 12 years ago yesterday.
