It would give them a sense of responsibility. The concept of money.
We have 2 actresses in the family, one will be in her 1st year of high school this year and the other one her 2nd year of college. Financially they never have to work a day in their life but the older one works p/t & tutors, she understands responsibility, never take anything for granted and that working for something can actually make it sweeter when it arrives.
How do you know the kids won't end up doing the same?
Someone could have easily said the same things about your relative, but she grew up and made her own choice to get a job. Just because the Gosselin kiddos are apparently in a "fantasy" doesn't mean they won't know about responsibility. They're, what, four? With timeouts and chores, etc. it seems they are being held accountable to the family. That's a basis in responsibility. You have no idea if it will carry over into adulthood or not.
As a result of Indian Territory allotments decades ago, our family is sitting on oil. Of course, the government wants it. Guess what, we don't have to work. However, we all do and live in modest homes (I'm in a three bedroom, eat-in kitchen with a one car garage) and drive modest cars (my first car was a Suzuki, now I drive a Rav 4) and work. We honestly don't even touch the royalties and bonuses. In fact, I'm agonizing over jobs right now because I want to be able to make ends meet without dipping into the savings. Sure we're able to afford nice things and vacations (that we usually all do with our extended family, so it's our matriarch and patriarch's choice to spend some of that money), but being fortunate does not necessarily effect work ethic and responsibility.
