I wish I had THAT problem! Adding the slightest bit of gaussian blur in PS is an easy correction if he finds that his images are too sharp.

I'm not doing this to cloud the issue, but for anyone who is also following this thread and may be considering the 18-135 purchased separately without the kit, OR the Nikkor 18-200 VR but feels it's too much money at $650 or so, may want to look at the new Sigma 18-200 HSM OS. It uses Sigma's version of AFS (HSM) and Sigma's version of VR (OS), and is about $150 - $200 less than the Nikkor (not affiliated with Sigma). I was highly impressed with my Sigma 10-20 EX, and thought I'd give another Sigma a try. I used it last month on an extended WDW/DCL trip, took about 700+ shots with it, and have been very impressed with its IQ and performance on the camera.

Don't get me wrong - I love my Nikkors and part of me wishes that was all I had in my kit. However, some of the 3rd party lenses are really good these days, are typically less money, and by far aren't the limiting factor for my photography anyway!

I bought the 10-20 primarily due to a once a year need to photograph groups at my company's annual meeting.

I agree, that is a fair amount of change to have tied up in something that you rarely use and/or haven't been happy with. Plus, 16mm is still considered "wide", just not "ultra-wide". Based on that, I'm with you - sell the 10-20, the 18-135, and get the 16-85 VR, which will make a great VR kit with your 70-300VR. That is, assuming the 85/70 overlap is good enough for your style.

Only one person has said it but I will put the plug in for the 18-200vr. I have the lens and use it on a D200. I absolutely love it. They are now readily available. Just a thought.

Congrats. Some day I'll upgrade but for now my D80 is keeping me busy and learning.

You are going to LOVE that 50mm I totally love my 50mm f/1.8. I had heard raves on it at another board and knew I wanted it and I'm so happy I got it. Next I will get a telephoto I almost got it but it was $299 or so and I decided to wait.

I saw a tagline somewhere that was actually about an Olympus, but you might like it modified for the Nikon world. OK, I know it's an old line but still appropriate to remember.

Seriously, once I played with my friend's D80 it was hard to go back to the D50. I've had my sights set on the D300 for awhile now and was hoping to save enough to get it in time for my trip to Europe. Finally I decided to just get it now so that I have time to get familiar with it before I go. Good rationalization eh?

Know anyone who wants to buy a lovingly cared for D50 with a new sensor?

The D300 is one amazing camera! I've barely had a chance to shoot with it, as DH has claimed it as his "toy" LOL. He's actually only shot with the 50/1.8 so far. BTW that's such a fun lens...I really like it and now want more primes! LOL He decided to keep the 18-70 b/c the 18-135 felt too plasticky (he didn't even shoot with it, just went based on reviews, but oh well).

Anyhoo, I really dig all those autofocus points, it's insane! You can focus on anything...crazy. If I ever get my hands back on the camera, I will upload some pics...lol

Congrats! Looking to do the same as you. Currently have a 2+ year old D50 could really use the expanded ISO and better image tracking...

You are going to love the D300. I didn't think there would be much difference between the D200 and the D300 but I have quickly fallen in love with the metering system of the D300.
