I REALLY thought that "John, you're a genius" was also a reference to a line in Carousel of Progress.

When John made a paint mixer for Sarah from their cake mixer,
Sarah says "John, You're a Genius"

I believe a listener wrote in and gave him the title. Not sure which show, sometime in the past year I think....

This thread is sooooo funny, but just to clarify for the OP, this is how John was officially awarded the title of "genius," and since he is obviously really a genius, it stuck.
