Just wondering what types of job you might be assigned for the CP if you are a journalism major in college?
My dd has to do something in her major field to get credit for an internship at Disney.
Anyone else a Journalism major that can share their work experience from Disney's CP? Thanks

well, you get to choose which roles you would most like and they try to place you in one of those roles. There are role descriptions on the WDW CP website. Nothing specifically for writing, though. My advice is to look at the roles that require you to pay most attention to detail and assisting guests as it could benefit her in interviewing, writing detailed pieces, etc.

I think you'd have to get a little creative to have any of the roles directly pertain to a journalism major, but I could be wrong. I'd say her best bet is to take one of the communication courses they offer there (there's two that I saw on the web site just now: one is Corporate Communication and the other is Explore Communication Processes at WDW). You can view a list of the courses offered and descriptions at the CP official web site.

I hope she finds a way to do it!

Do these classes count towards her college credits? Thanks and I hope this works out for her too:thumbsup2

Just so you understand, the CP is absolutely unrelated to most college majors. If you are in hospitality, culinary or retail management, I could see correlation IF you are placed in one of those roles, but a field of study certainly would not guarantee a placement. It is NOT an "internship", it is a work/life experience. If she is interested in a true internship, then she should apply for a professional internship her junior or senior year which would be more directly related to her field. I am finding more and more people who don't understand what they are getting into with the CP...

Well, her college (Liberty University) requires an internship. Her advisor said that this would count towards her internship but it should fall into her major. I was on the CP website and Journalism is listed as one of the fields of study (or something like that) but that page did not specifically list jobs available. Hopefully this will work for DD. She really wants to do the CP program so I hope this will work out for her.

here is a list of roles:
Attractions
Bell Services
Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique (VERY limited)
Concierge
Character Attendant
Custodial
Food & Bev (full and quick serve)
Hospitality
Housekeeping
Lifeguard
Main Entrance Ops (parking lot, park greeter, ticket sales)
Merchandise
Photopass Photographer
Recreation
Transportation
Vacation Planner (ticket sales)
Costuming

with the exception of Photopass photographer (which would be a stretch, IMO) none of the roles are related to journalism in any way (or pretty much any major except for hospitality, retail management, or culinary). I think it is very important to realize that these are basically minimum wage roles that add work and life experience as well as Disney on a resume. They also serve as a foot in the door to the company. Disney U offers classes, but she will be limited to the number of classes she can take (1 for the regular season, 2 for advantage, I think?) Each class is a possible 3 semester hours. Corporate communication would probably be the only credit class that would apply.

Please don't think I am discouraging her in any way. 2 of my DDs are CP alum as am I and I think it's a fantastic program. I've just heard of too many students who think it is a true "internship" when it really is not as far as many programs are concerned. The opportunities are amazing and I highly recommend it, just don't plan on the CP counting as an "internship" for school purposes. There are communication Professional Internships, but require you to be a junior or senior and prior CP experience is a plus, so it might be good for her to come for the CP, get that foot in the door, become a campus rep to maintain her status, then return as a PI for the actual internship requirement.

To just echo what Gray said, while it is considered an "internship" by most college standards and usually meets "internship" requirements, it's not like a typical one.

I've done internships other than at Disney. They were more about actual experience relating to certain areas of business. Disney is really a resume expander, real life work experience type of internship. You don't really concentrate on your area of study unless you take classes.

Adding one other to the list...my DD's major is Fashion Design and Merchandising and she is working in Costuming :)
