Job outsourcing

Of all the topics of this election, this was one of those I found most amusing. Whenever I brought up the subject to the other members of my crew (I'm an airline pilot at a regional subsidiary of a major airline, and almost always fly with people I've never met before), the response was nearly universal: given a product such as a laptop, with equal processors, equal RAM, equal features..., and one was $999 and made in China, and the other was $1299 and made in USA, almost all chose the cheaper one. Yet all agreed that outsourcing was a scourge on the American economy, and an overall majority accepted Sen. Kerry's argument, quite seriously, without irony. Even when pressed about when the last time someone in China flew our (domestic) airline, the most frequent argument was "That's what's best for me..." or "That's competition for you..." BTW, my airline has unionized pilots and flight attendants (the people I spend my time with on the road).

Does anyone else find this the least bit amusing (in a sad way)?

My problem with outsourcing is that when you call for tech support on that lap-top - you get the guy in India. Tech support used to be right here in the good ole USof A!

As for some people saying that those who have lost their low-level jobs to out-sourcing, I know someone who has a Masters' degree in medical research & development who got "down-sized" and it isn't pretty!

So, no I'm not amused.

I am not amused either.

My DS has a degree in Mechanical Engineering and is working at Kohl's. Way too many engineering jobs are going overseas. The economy in Michigan is awful....any wonder it went to Kerry?

.

They do still exist in the US. My DH is a member of a large tech support group in the Philly area. They attempted to outsource, and it didn't work, so they are all still here!

Not amusing at all. Come visit West Michigan sometime. My husband works for Johnson Controls and has had at least 5 friends a quarter at his company lose jobs to Canada or Mexico the last few years. Major outsourcing here.

I'm amused because these people didn't even comprehend that they were part of the problem!!!!!!!!! The irony was completely lost on them (as it was, apparently, on some here).

Glad to hear that somebody tried outsourcing and it didn't work. I, for one, have grown very tired of trying to buy American, only to be foiled time and again. I've stopped shopping at Walmart, but that only helps so much.
