I have a job interview on Monday. It is for another position (paraprofessional) in the school district where I am already employed. Now I am not sure what my chances are for getting the position but I have a few concerns that I would like to have figured out even before the interview. I have a few prior commitments. My position I have now is very flexible so I never worried. This new position will not be so flexible. I have commited 2 days in Dec (only a couple hours each day) to help with my kids' holiday program (not to mention I want to be there to see them perform). Also...and I know this is far away... but my husband and I have a vacation planned for Sept 2011. We are finally taking a honeymoon (after 12 years of marriage). This trip has been in the works for 3 years and is already paid for. I would need to miss 6 days of work. I won't be paid for the time off and I already know that but I cannot give this up. When would you mention both? During the interview? If I get offered the job?
Thanks for the advice

And I just realized my keyboard is whacky and sticking...must need a new one and I just noticed my title is mispelled so no need to point that out

Unless they ask you about your vacation plans, don't bring it up during the interview. When you are offered the job is the time to mention it.

Thanks for the reply. So if I get offered the job should I tell them that I have the commitments in December (only missing a couple hours from work)? Will it be too soon to mention the vacation in 2011?

When offered the job, say that you have two commitments of your time and tell them what they are. If they want you--and if they offered you the job, they obviously do--they should O.K. it then.

Good luck! :)

A few hours probably won't be an issue in December. However, if your school is like the where i worked, the expectation was that you took your vacation on school holidays. While it was possible to bend this a bit by taking one day here or there an attaching it to a long week-end, taking a full week for a vacation (not sick days) would have been a big issue at our school. Maybe you could change your vacation to match the school calendar.

Thanks for the reply. As for our vacation there is no way to change it. DH's schedule is more difficult to bend than any I have ever seen. And this may sound ridiculous but since DH and I have never been anywhere together (and never had more than 1 night away from the kids) this time we spend together is worth more to me than the job. Don't get me wrong I really want this position but this time my DH and I are going to have is much more than a vacation. We have gone through some pretty rough times. We put the everything else in our lives before our marriage. I mean everything, and our marriage suffered. We are now making a our marriage our first priority.

(Bolding is mine) Sorry you had some rough times but kudos to you both for working it out. I hope you have a great time together!!!!!!!!:woohoo:

Thanks for all the advice. I did not get the original job that I applied for but I applied for and was offered and even better job. It is at my kiddos school and the hours are for the exact times they are in school. I received the call yesterday (a great Christmas present). I told the principal (the one that called) that I had 2 prior commitments...when they were.. how long I would be gone. She told me they would help find subs. She said family is always first that that didn't just mean with the kids (married people need time too). So now I am going to be able to go on our honeymoon AND I can go on my DH's business trips (he has one a year and wants me to tag along)
