OK...I have a college degree. I've worked 2 professional jobs about 16 years ago. I've been raising my family the past 16 yrs. I have had a job but not a career for the past 9 which included managing 6-10 people. As of Feb the job was outsourced.

I've been sending many resumes out. No bites.

If I was hired at a national retailer as an hourly employee....do you think after having the job for a period of time (how much time minimum?) would I have a better chance for advancement into management?

Depends on the company.

I've worked in retail management for 17 years and at the various employers, once we saw that a new hire had management potential, they were trained in more job functions. Then as an opening came up, we had an easier time promoting them into the role.

You're close to Philly, right? You have plenty of retailers to choose from. I'd suggest applying at stores you enjoy shopping in. Familiarity with the product will make the job easier. :)

Over the years, I've been recruited by other retailers because I'm a good salesperson. Most of the time, it's been for companies that I don't shop with. When I explain that it's easy to sell what I enjoy and use and that I don't use their products, they tend to leave it at that.

By the same token, I like to recruit my customers for the part time openings we have from time to time. I get an idea of how they are over time and if they're a good fit, I tell them they should think about getting a discount on the things they're going to buy anyway!

Good luck. If you've got any questions, feel free to PM me. I can check to see what's going on with my employer in your area if that interests you. I won't say who it is on the boards, but I'll be happy to in a PM.

You need to get your foot in the door and work your way back up again. Don't fall into the trap of thinking any job is beneath you. Watch the movie Pursuit of Happyness. Whatever job you get your foot in the door with will provide you with an opportunity to show you can shine. Remember, you are competing with everyone in the same job title. If you become number one, the best, then they will hire you, provided they have the resources. If it is a revenue producing job, this especially applies. Watch the movie Two for the Money. Also, remember, the only difference between a supervisor and his/her employee are that they have different responsibilities. If you make your supervisor look good to their management, then they should, in turn, bring you up with them. So, no matter what job you get:

1) compete against everyone with your title and become the best by a long shot WITHOUT stepping on anybody in the process.

2) build a relationship with your boss. Find out how they work and change to where you two compliment each other.

3) find out the goals of your boss and do everything you can to help them exceed their goals.

4) throw your ego and your anger out the door. they will get you nowhere in life but in trouble.

5) you have to give respect to earn respect. don't ever let a negative word come out of your mouth. don't get involved in gossip, even if just laughing. don't look down on anyone.

I have a lot more, but I am coming up with a blank. Those tips alone will guarantee you a position at any temp to hire position. Remember, God will throw you challenges to test your faith. Don't think any job is beneath you when are trying to support your family. Adapt and learn as much as you can and most importantly, revel in the journey!

Good luck to you and your family!

Keep Smiling!
Brian
