what would you do?
I've been asked to return to my old job (newspaper) and I'm really not sure which way to turn.
pros are - less hours, less travelling, no weekend work, company pension, more secure job, better basic pay, big bonuses.
cons are - mega pressure, struggle to fit holidays in, lots of cold calling, working back in my home town where everyone knows you and feels entitled to tell you what YOU wrote in YOUR paper etc

where I am
pros are - lovely pressure free job, I really enjoy what I do, lots of DISsing opportunities, cut price travel (not free though!)
cons are - no real security, what with the internet etc although most of what I do is beyond most peoples grasp using web sites its not rocket science so you never know how the travel industry is going to go, long hours, rubbish pay, no big bonuses (we don't even get our xmas party paid for!) no pension, nasty train ticket people! (people who travel around the world are more amenable when a flight gets delayed than people whose train was an hour late getting some place unexciting)

I'm torn, help me make a decision. :confused3

 Wish you all the best with your choice, I would stick with the job I enjoyed/loved the most if it is financially viable for you :)

What a tricky situation for you.I would do the job i loved most, not much help i'm afraid but money isn't everything. :grouphug: Good Look whatever you decide.

If you are not feeling the financial pinch at all then I would pick the job that makes you happy over the one with more pay every time :teeth:

Good luck in whatever you decide to do :wizard:

If your current employment was your dream job, I'd say stick with that, but I get the impression it isn't - still quite a few 'negatives' to it.

Most of us work as a means to an end and wouldn't if we didn't have to. I'm in a high-pressure job which I don't enjoy, but I could really only consider leaving for a true vocation - I get a good salary, good bonuses (because I have huge targets and failure isn't an option!), good pension, 6 weeks holiday a year (on top of Bank Holidays), I can work from home or from the office, I'm my own boss, I don't work at weekends... In many ways I know I'm very lucky and I'm sure that for more than a few people this would be their idea of a dream job!

Not an easy decision and I don't envy you. If it was the other way around (i.e. you were already in the secure job which paid well, etc.) I'm sure it would be easier.

Sorry, not much help, am I? Good luck with whatever you decide.

Hard choice hon :grouphug: I would stay where I didnt get up dreading to go to work in the morning and doing the job I loved if its not draining your finances, however if you feel you could cope with the pressure of the job at the newspaper and the rewards are greater maybe its time to give it a go second time around. Good Luck with whatever you decide :goodvibes

Just wanted to say Goodluck with whatever you choose to do. :)

Provided you can manage financially, I think quality of life is most important. Only you can decide, but I do wish you lots of luck making your decision. Let us know what you decide won't you?

Carol ~ I think if it was me I would consider why I left the job in the first place and why you chose the job that you are in at the moment.

I'm lucky ~ I'm doing the job that for me is my 'dream job' and I truly believe it is my vocation. That being said, I did change my career path about 6 years ago because I knew I wasn't on the right track.

At the end of the day only you can decide the job that is right for you. Good Luck because it is evident that it is not an easy decision to make :grouphug:

If the offer of returning to your old job hadn't been made, would you have been looking for something else?

If you stay where you are, will you be kicking yourself a couple of months down the line?

It's obviously a tough choice :( Lots of luck with whatever you decide is right for you

For me I'd choose dream job over finances. Hopefully you'll work it out :grouphug:

Personally i would do the job that i enjoyed the most, was in a similar situation i was out of work, and was offered my old job back, money was excellent, but the job i am doing now for the last year unexpectedly came up, not as much dosh but i love it, and the people i am working with, boy am i glad i didnt go back to my old job,

Can only second what others have said. Good luck Carol on making your decision. :grouphug:

Thanks everybody, you're a really great bunch, I spent all night thinking about it (again!) and I still haven't really decided. I think I'll probably turn it down. I do love what I'm doing but to be honest it doesn't really stretch me as much as I'd like. I know I'm capable of bigger things but I do so love working in travel. The money they're offering at the paper isn't really enough for me to jump in without thinking twice so I guess I'll probably stick where I am at the mo and maybe look around for something a wee bit more chaleenging in my current field.
The estate agents I used to work for also asked me back a few days ago (I must either be very popular or very cheap labour!) and that's something else to take into consideration.
If anyone knows of a well paid short hours job writing reviews on new hotels then let me know I think thats what I'm aiming for :rotfl2:

Well, I'm sure you'll make the right decision for you. My dream job would be going on exotic holidays all over the world, travelling first class naturally and only 5* hotels :teeth: Anybody know where I can get such a job? :rotfl2:

Sounds like you have made the right decision Carol.

Just got to this post, Carol. Good luck with your decision, whatever it may be :grouphug:

I have a decision making process that I use when I am really stuck. I get someone to tell me what to do, and if I feel disappointed, then I do the opposite. A bit strange maybe, but it works - even if you are only trying to choose between chocolate bars!
