trying to plan a few days away locally... Planning on going to Knoebels ...family loves it there...
But thought of stopping a night or 2 in Jim Thorpe...never been there before... any suggestions...ideas...

Not a lot in Jim Thorpe...formerly Mauch Chunk PA. I think there is a decent Hampton Inn there. You might want to try a busier town like Reading or Hazleton

Pocono whitewater. There is rafting, biking, skirmish paintball. h20 waterpark. Train rides. Shopping. camping at mauch chunk lake park. hmm trying to think of other things to do. Wouldn't recommend hazleton. Not a great area. There is the Inn at Jim Thorpe. Try 1800 poconos they should be able to help you some more. :)

They also just finished the rails to trails if you like biking. You can bike a full 25 miles of the lehigh gorge railway now.

Not sure if it always goes or if it is a holiday thing however; they have a train ride (original steam train I believe).

Are you aware of the distance between the two locations? It is quite far. (sorry...just went back and reread the "local"part!

Also, the pocono's has Camel Beach water park which is always voted top water park (according to their signs anyway :)

I grew up a few miles from there! They have the steam train, there's also a place called Glen Oko Falls, Penns Peak has some bands there nightly, Camelback isn't too far away, as far as hotels..not too many in that area. Lehighton is the next town over and they have a Country Inn & Suites and a Hampton Inn too I think. HTH

Stop by and visit for day but move on to and stay in different area with more dining and lodging options, like around Lake Harmony or Camelback. Great Wolf Lodge might be fun, my nephews love it.

:)

My dh and I stayed in Jim Thorpe once, at a B&B...the town is quaint. The B&B was creepy. We've never been back.

If you do decide on the Stroudsburg/Tannersville area, Camelbeach water park is a lot of fun. It is clean, and the water rides will keep you busy all day. My kids are 15 and 11 and like it alot. Also, in the same area are some decent outlets (The Crossings), if you want to get some shopping in.

Hampton Inn in Jim Thorpe is nice. Isn't Balz State Park there too? Its a nice, small, beach and picnic park.
