This summer I have TWO weddings - both my and my husbands siblings are getting married (not to each other!). I have a thyroid problem (hypo). I take meds that may cause weight gain. And I sprained AND broke 2 bones in my left ankle this past May. When my son was two, I was almost in a 6, he is now 8 and I'm in a 12. Blah.

My SIL had a baby (c-section) in Oct. and is getting married this summer.

We talked about joining a gym and going together, but then we have the babysitter issue - baby is too young for gym's daycare, or the gym doesn't offer one. So we started looking at dvd's.

Jillian Michaels 30 day shred has awesome reviews on amazon.

Or should we get her Burn Fat/Boost Metabolism dvd?

We both have fat we need to lose... but I have read reviews saying it's more difficult than the 30 day shred. Is the 30 day shred just toning, or is it also weight loss?

Has anyone read Jillian Michaels book? Is it worth buying? If it's just full of "eat more veggies, less carbs", I'll skip it. But if it's truly enlightening and helpful, I'll look into it.

Thanks!

I REALLY REALLY injured my back on the "No More Trouble Zones" by JM. The lunges did me in. I am still recovering.:sad2:

Did you see a physical therapist when you broke your ankle?

Whether you did or did not I would go and see a physical therapist for exercises for you. I would not start a random DVD by anyone since you have a preexisting condition.

The physical therapist will be able to guide you in a safe direction.:thumbsup2

A mother's happiness is like a beacon, lighting up the future but reflected also on the past in the guise of fond memories.

Get both.

However, I will say that I ruined my ankle on the 30 Day Shred. It's not Jillian's fault but the jumping jacks did something and then I got posterior tibial tendonitis of which I will one day need surgery for. Again, it's my body and not her fault but the DVD is intense.

I do Jillian Micheals 30 day shred, but only sporadically to suplement when I do another shorter workout. Like others have indicated, I can see a huge potential for injury in many of the excercizes.

If you are *very beginner* and looking for a nice cardio DVD, I recommend Leslie Sansone's "Walk Away the Pounds" Dvds. They are very low impact, easy to follow, and help get you motivated until you can eventually try more difficult stuff.

For strength and Toning, I LOVE Jari Love. My only complaint about her DVDs is on some, the cueing isn't very well timed--I have to wait until several seconds into each excercize to figure out a) what type of move she is doing and/or b) what size weights I should be using. I find that her DVD "Ripped to the Core" is least problematic with those two issues.

I work out in my basement for the same reason as you. It's much easier (and cheaper) to work out downstairs while my son is napping than it is to find someone to watch him while I run out to the gym.

I have three of Jillian's DVDs: 30 Day Shred, Burn Fat/Boost Metabolism, and No More Trouble Zones. All three are excellent workouts. Amazon reviews don't lie.

Both 30 Day Shred and No More Trouble Zones couple weights with cardio.
Burn Fat/Boost Metabolism is a cardio workout only.

If you really need to lose weight, I recommend a well-rounded workout routine that includes both weights and cardio to burn through the fat. The more varied your routine, the quicker you will see results. Since you can't work the same muscles two days in a row, I did cardio every other day.

Jillian is tough. But I saw results with her workouts. Yes, the 30 Day Shred is a GREAT workout, but I think all three of the ones I use are great. I have never read her books, so I cannot answer that question.

Just recently in November I started P90x. Now THAT is a beast of a workout, and you will see results faster with that than with just about anything else. I love P90x more than Jillian.

Have fun!

I have a Jari Love DVD. It's the Extremely Ripped 1000 one. She's tough! I am soaking wet at the end of that workout. But you're right about her lack of info -- sometimes I have to watch what she's doing before I jump in.

thanks for the replies!!

no, i didn't see a physical therapist after i injured my ankle. my dr was going to send me to therapy as my injury was nasty, but at the time (summer), i had nothing to do with my kids while i was at therapy. it was bad enough dragging them to the dr with me every week. i do regret not going as it does occasionally bother me, especially since the weather changed. it is very frustrating how much this injury has effected my life.

after reading these replies, i will def. consult my dr. i think my mom has the walk away the pounds dvd.

I know you didn't ask but I think Jillian Michaels is a freak. She screams at people and expects way to much of out of shape people in the beginning. There are a lot of great excersize physiologists out there with excersize videos. Why give your money to a screaming shrew? (guess I didn't hold back, huh?)

I've never watched The Biggest Loser but I didn't feel that she was screaming on 30 Day Shred.:confused3

I've only watched the show,in part, a few times. She's been a witch each time but I'm sure that's more exciting than being an old softie. The man who's a trainer is also a horrible harpie; I swear I would deck him then sit on him until he screamed for mercy if I was one of the contestants!!!

I have had problems with my feet/ankles my whole life and I can't just pick a dvd and go at it or I'll end up with some sort of issue for a few weeks.

I have had a lot of luck with some of the wii stuff - when I was really exercising, I even got to the point where I was 'fit' enough that I could jog in place and I LOVED it! Cardio-boxing, dancing, walking, step aerobics, and yoga are all things that have helped me. I can't go at things with a vengeance because of my feet, but I can do them slowly and still work up a sweat and burn calories.

I would start out slow because the more you do, the more you will likely build up strength in your bad ankle.

Definitely consult your doctor first, though!! :thumbsup2
