I have just booked my first ever ADR for Jiko at AKL (don't ask me how I have got away with four previous trips without booking ADRs)!! As you may have gathered I am totally excited about stopping at the AKL :goodvibes and now about eating at Jiko too.

Has anyone eaten here, and any recommendations? I have been looking at the menu and there is so much choice!

P.S. Did I mention I'm stopping at the AKL :yay:

I haven't eaten there yet but i'm with you on never having booked ADRs.. Well my mum booked 2 character meals in 2002 but they were with our TA not Disney..

I haven't eaten here yet but have ADR's for my forthcoming trip! We are staying at AKL for our first week too! Will look forward to hearing what you think! :teeth:

Laur ~ You will absolutely love AKL and Jiko. Last time we were there I had the Kenyan Chicken Flatbread, soooooo delicious. Also a steak that was melt is the mouth out of this world wonderful. If you get a chance to visit Boma, either for breakfast or dinner I would recommend it.

That's my idea of a good hotel! I've never been in Jiko, DW doesn't fancy the menu. I could eat every night at Boma though, roasted prime rib and sweet mustard.

In fact come to think of it DW only eats chicken nuggets and chips at Boma. princess:

Jiko is the BEST restaurant at WDW. FAR better than CG.

Jiko is a good meal and is a dining experience.

Try any of the flatbreads to share as an appetizer.

The Wood grilled Filet Mingeon, the lamb, the shrimp are terrific items for entrees.

Also, try the coffee - its' delic.

The wines are magnificant.

Thank you all for replying and making me even more excited (who'd have thought that was possible?!) :goodvibes

I've eaten at Jiko many times. It's always glorious, but the last time I ate there was possibly my favorite time. We arrived quite late and had the restaurant almost to ourselves. The waitress was amazing. We asked her to suggest a wine, as we weren't very familiat with the S. African wines. She said, leave it to me, and arrived back with glasses and 3 open bottles. She said to try them and left us with the bottles!!! Well, after a few *samples*, we chose a bottle. It was possibly the best wine I ever had. It was a Pinotage, I'm sorry I don't remember more about it. We decided at that time, to order 5 appetizers for the 2 of us to share instead of dinners. We just couldn't choose! Since it was late, the kitchen sent word with the waitress that they were greatful that we were only ordering appetizers, I guess it was easier for them. The 5 appetizers filled us up beautifully, as the portions are good. We couldn't finish the bottle of wine, so she corked it and sent us off to take it back to our room!
From there, we went out to the hot tub and sat on the edge and soaked our feet, discussing what a lovely meal it was!
That's what I call grown-up Disney magic! :smooth:

That sounds truly magical. Thanks for sharing that lovely story with me. :goodvibes

Jiko is a great restaurant. We had a lovely meal there last month. I, for one, would not agree that it's better than CG. We had two of our best meals there. Great views and the food was to die for.........

The ambiance is better at Jiko, the service is better at Jiko, the decor is better at Jiko and the food was definitely better at Jiko. :goodvibes Jiko also didn't have children screaming and running around. We have dined at some fabulous restaurants and found CG extremely over-hyped.

I like both restaurants for different reasons.

We had a wonderful meal at Jiko, and it's on our list for this trip. We're staying at the AKL this month too. One really nice experience we had at Jiko one evening was when we sat in the "bar" and just ordered chocolate martinis and dessert.

BTW, the AKL pool is open 24 hours unlike some of the other resorts. If you find you wake up at some weird hour because of the time difference throw your suit on and go for a swim. This is one of my favorite things to do at the resort. It's really special. Sometimes I even go back to bed after if it's really early. Sometimes I do a load of laundry at the same time, and bring back the morning drinks. (My DH is usually the mug man. :teeth: )

Mel

P.S. If you see an american woman (and maybe her English DH) swimming at 5 in the morning say Hi.

Mmmm, chocolate martinis sound really nice. I am really impressed to hear that the pool is open 24 hours. We are both really looking forward to taking advantage of the hot tubs. I am not all that good at getting out of bed, so don't think we'll ever make it to the pool that early, but if we do I'll be sure to say hi
