I am thinking of booking Jiko for one of our evenings...we have never been and am excited to see the Animal Kingdom Lodge :)
Any reviews of this restaurant?
We are looking at the chicken on the menu...
Chermoula-Roasted, Tanglewood Chicken - Served with red skin mashed potatoes, preserved lemons, kalamata olives, roasted garlic, herbs, and harissa.

Jiko is my favorite restaurant at WDW. Great food, wine selection, ambience and service. Give it a try - you will love it!

I think I am the only possible person on this board that absolutely hates Jiko. Given the fact that it was in 2007 that I ate there, I still to this day will probably never eat there again. I had made the ADR on the basis of DISers reviews and a few of my friends that were CMs. I saw the pictures of the food on the DIS. It looked delicious! We were down during free dining so I figured it would be the best time to try something new.. since we technically weren't paying for it :) DBF had gotten the Oak Grilled Filet with the mac and cheese. He eats his filet mid to mid well. It came out rare to mid rare at best. His macaroni was like paste. I could have spread it on a cracker. It was totally inedible. I ordered the Roast pork. It came out pink and I'm not just talking about pink like it was almost cooked through but not quite. I'm talking like when you cook an Ahi Tuna steak. Our server was horrible. She had three 2 top tables and one large party. We hardly saw her except to take our orders. We didn't even tell her that our entrees weren't good. We were afraid that if we gave her our entrees to be corrected, they would a) never come back or b) come back colder than an ice cube. It was clear that the other tables felt the same way about her service. It took forever just to get water! We stuck to our apps and soup/salad that we had gotten and dessert. I believe at that time this was a four course meal on the DDP. I had gotten some soup and the tamales. They were both good although I remember DBF got the Cucumber, Tomato salad and he didn't like it. I tried it and wasn't a big fan either. The creme brulee is amazing! I am a creme brulee fanatic and this was one of the best. Now, I'm sure that my experience at Jiko was far and few because I still hear how much people love this restaurant. I think more or less I was let down because I had heard such rave reviews and I ate there and it ended up being poo. Spoodles was much better. We make that our must do every time we go from now on.

I'm thinking about booking this to I love to hear more reviews please.

We went to Jiko in May and absolutely LOVED it. It's on our MUST DO list for September, and we want to go there for our anniversary night. We had the tuna appetizer and the olive flatbread, very good. I had the short ribs and they were incredible. My 11 year old daughter, who is a very picky eater, chose the filet mignon...she ate the entire thing! Almost a year later she still talks about it. Our waiter was awesome. Very nice, very helpful, very entertaining. We all chose different desserts and shared them. Pretty restaurant, great hotel!

We love Jiko and will be going back on our next trip.
It is a beautiful restaurant with warm, friendly servers and incredible food. We shared a bottle of wine recommended by our server and it was wonderful. It was quiet and a very nice, romantic dinner.
Good Luck

We love Jiko. We had it booked for one night during our last vacation. After eating there, we got right on the phone to change some ADRs and ate there three times. The food was phenomenal, the atmosphere was right on the money and the staff were great.

Next trip, we will probably eat here at least three times and possible another two for the December trip.

I had the steak and the halibut and both were phenomenal. Each time the dessert was the YOAMD one (with the peaches) and that was the most gorgeous thing I have ever eaten, anywhere, ever! I tried the lemon curd one and it was delish. Not one person at our table had one complaint any of the times we have been there. It was the only signature restaurant where service did not change after we said we do not drink wine (and no alcohol until dessert). Beware of the cocktails though, they nearly blew my head off!

Two people in our group on last trip had the chicken and did not like it at all. One is an adventurous eater and one is not but they both said they did not like the seasoning/spices used.

I enjoy Jiko a great deal and we've eaten here many times but honestly, the only entree I've ever really enjoyed is the filet and mac/cheese. The appetizers are great though.

I had a quick in and out trip to Orlando last night and some friends managed to land last minute reservations at Jiko for us. Of the signature restaurants it is one of my favorites. I had the Curried Shrimp last night, it was wonderful, with a kick of spice, which was perfect. My friends was the ribs and chicken respectively, and they both enjoyed their dishes as well. I have never been disappointed there, with service or food.

I think I am the only possible person on this board that absolutely hates Jiko.

Nope. You're not. My husband and I both aren't fans. We ate there last Sunday and were not impressed at all. I was so disappointed considering the rave reviews it gets here on the dining board. But, I think the problem lies with us. We just don't like the spices.
We started with the Barbecue Chicken FlatBread which was delicious. Also, the Taste of Africa which we didn't like at all except the dipping bread was great. I could have made a meal of that.
My husband had the Short Ribs for dinner and I had the filet over Mac and Cheese. Filet and Short ribs were uninspiring. California Grill and Flying Fish are better (to me) and the Mac and Cheese was ice cold. I have to say that this was a trend last week. Our party of six had to send cold food back numerous times. Tutto Italia was the only restaurant that served us hot food. And I'm talking ice cold most of the time. Most of this crowd opens the fridge and digs in so they're not too fussy, so it has to be really cold for them to send food back.:) My daughter in law made a meal of the duck confit appetizer which she enjoyed. Her complaint was that there was too much duck! Not a bad complaint to have at all.
I think if you're adventurous Jiko will suit you better than someone like me.

My fiance and I ate here for a romantic night out in our trip in Dec 08. I had that chicken dish. It was fantastic. We tried different wines and the flatbread with the apples is AMAZING. It was SOOOOOO romantic. Afterwards, we went outside of the lodge and watched the animals with the nightvision googles. 4 days later we bought into animal kingdom villas! :rotfl:

my family and I LOVE Jiko, the flavors are amazing and unlike anything else we eat at home.....we have been lucky enough to get in the wine room both times we have eaten there and we LOVED everything we had.....

We were VERY hesitant to try Jiko but took the plunge in October 2008 and.....

WE LOVED IT!

That being said, the food is slightly exotic and many of the spices are unfamiliar but if you go in with an open mind I'm sure you will find many items you'll like.

I will warn you, my flash makes meats appear MUCH rarer than they actually are!

Ostrich Filet - served medium. This was paired with creamed sweet potatoes and a pomegranate sauce. It was absolutely fantastic. The meat is rich and dense, a cross between duck and beef would be the best description.

Barbecue Chicken Flatbread served with Kenyan Coffee BBQ sauce and julienne green apple & onion. This does have a very smokey undertone but its brightened by the sweet and crisp apples.

Cheese Plate (selection changes frequently) From bottom to top they went from a smooth & creamy french, to a firmer spanish, to a hard french and then a hard & crumbly italian, finished with an unripened soft goat cheese from Canada :thumbsup2

Two Types of Bread with Tandoori Butter. The two breads were a flax bread and a honey wheat. My family has tried Indian cuisine on several occasions and we dislike strong curry flavor. That being said - the Tandoori butter was exceptionally good!

Filet with Macaroni & Cheese and Red Wine Reduction. Contrary to what others have said, this was one of the BEST filets I have had on Disney property. The filet itself was cooked to a perfect medium and was juicy and could have been cut with a fork. The mac & cheese was creamy with a perfect blend of sharp and smooth cheeses. The red wine reduction paired well with both the beef and the pasta.

Lamb Tenderloin with berbere spiced lentils. I did not try this dish as I'm not a big fan of lamb but both my parents had this dish and raved about it! Again it was a perfect medium (it just appears more rare due to the flash).

We were so stuffed from all the other courses, but couldn't pass up trying at least 1 dessert, so we tried....Meyer Lemon Curd with Sour Cream Ice Cream & Blueberry Pomegranate Compote. This was lovely and light. The perfect end to the evening.

Our server, Ron, was fantastic. Friendly without being intrusive, made wonderful suggestions and had near perfect timing.

Here are some pictures from our table. As you enter the restaurant you pass a small bar and private room, then there is a wall of windows. We were located 1 row back from the windows, near the cooking place, which is seen in this picture...

We used to love Jiko. It used to be our favorite. We'd make it down for dinner at least four or five times a year (we're two hours away, so day trips/overnight trips are very common for us).

We loved the spices, the service, the wines, the flatbreads, the steaks ... we even loved just walking around the lodge!

We had our first sour experience during free dining in September of 2007. Now, we don't do DDP, so we kind of chalked that experience up to going during free dining. Service was slow, portions were tiny compared to what we were used to (and the prices had gone up!) and we just got the vibe from our server that he had a million better things to do than his job. Like we were bugging him.

We went again last January. Both DH & I had to send our steaks back a couple times. They were absolutely raw in the middle. We got lectured by our server that time (a female ... don't know her name) about how the steaks should really be eaten rare. Uh, excuse me, but for $37 a pop, we like our steaks med/med well. They finally came out burned to a crisp. It was like they were trying to prove a point. We ate around the char because we were starving at that point and asked for a manager. One never came.

We decided to give our old favorite one more try last May. More of the same. Over an hour wait past our ADR time, and then another 30 minutes once we were seated just to get water and bread. And we actually had to ask and remind our server that we were very thirsty and starving at that point ... to please bring us something non-alcoholic to drink. Steaks, once again, severely undercooked, lectured again when we asked for them to be cooked medium, never even offered dessert or coffee, just given our bill while we were still eating dinner.

We are done with Jiko. This is a restaurant DH & I had spent numerous anniversary meals. We'd eaten there four, five times a year for years. I do get nervous eating somewhere so regularly because, "something is bound to go wrong at some point," but three strikes in a row, and you're out.

We pay out of pocket since we don't stay onsite, and even with the DDE, with the tiny portions now offered, Jiko was not worth the prices they were charging. It might be a good deal for those with the DDP, but some of the servers working there really need to find something else to do.

Also, we're really not a difficult group. It's just DH & I, sometimes we bring my foodie mother. We like everything on a menu, we order apps, entrees & desserts and tip high. Honestly, it takes a lot to turn us off a restaurant, as you can read by the fact we gave them two more chances after the first sour experience.

We really enjoy Jiko. It's not on our "must do" list, but when we stay at AK Lodge, we make it a point t eat there. My favorites are the appetizers and wine! It's just that getting from resort to resort is such a pain that we don't do it a lot. For the one time that we make the trip, we opt for Flying Fish, or California Grille if we're at a monorail resort. I should point out that we usually are only there for 4-5 days at a time.

Jiko...Jiko...where do I start? It's probably my favorite restaurant at WDW. I can easily eat just appetizers, although the halibut (I think that's the right fish) with sauce is to DIE FOR. Hubby favors the scallop meal, and the tuna is also a great choice. I adore their cheese plate, which is usually heavy on goat and sheep cheeses, and the new beef roll appetizer is soooo yummy. You can't go wrong with the flatbreads either. They got a new chef fairly recently, and all the changes I've seen have been good ones (not that it was bad before!).

We loved Jiko when we ate there October 2007 and plan to go again this trip. If you are interested, my review is in my signature line. JJ

We love Jiko. On our April/May 2008 trip we had such a good meal the first time that we booked and went another night in the same trip (but we were there for 21 nights). Both times we were seated almost immediately after arriving, service was quick and we had great servers both times. I had the Filet Mignon both times and OH it was SOOOO good. All of our meals were great.

It is on our must do when we go next.
