My 14 yo son and I will be booking this restaurant for our dinner on our arrival night in August. The menu looks a little intimidating, and the only thing that really appeals to me is the filet/mac cheese entree. I don't know how my son will do with the red wine sauce as he is not experienced with fancier/more upscale dining....however there seems to be so many wonderful reviews of excellent food here, that it definitely has my interest piqued. I thought it would be a nice arrival dinner, as it is in the same resort we are staying at (AKL CL) We are arriving at MCO around 4:45, so should be checked in and settled in with time for a 6:45 dinner. We are doing the deluxe dining plan, so have the credits to use on a signature dinner. If we don't do Jiko, the next thing would be either room service or Ohana for dinner/ and hoping to have time see Wishes from the Poly beach. I don't REALLY want to be doing a lot of buses/travelling the first night, so I am hoping that Jiko can offer us a meal we will both enjoy, I've always wanted to try this restaurant , but we where always on the regular dining plan so never had enough credits.
:goodvibes Thanks for the reviews/thoughts

We love Jiko. Full review in the link in my signature. A good red wine sauce can make a steak. :)

Jiko is great! I have to be honest though, all I have eaten there is the Filet with Mac & cheese as it is so good that I just can't have anything else because I dont want to miss the filet :lmao:

It is not really strong in the spice department, we are not big fans of Boma dinner, but LOVE Jiko. I am sure that if your son didn't want the filet with the sauce (which is delicious) then he could ask for it to be without it or many be on the side so he can try it. He may find some new flavours that he loves.

I would say go and try it, for us it is a must do on our trip. :goodvibes

Their filet with Mac&cheese was very very good.

But I like their scallop better.

Their ostrich appetizer was excellent.

Thank you for all the replies so far! It is making me feel excited to be trying this restaurant. Can you please tell me what Ostrich tastes like??? :scared1: that is definitely something out of my comfort zone, but I am curious to know if it is like chicken or beef, or something totally unfamiliar?? The only meat I really do not like is Lamb, it has too much of a wild/gamey taste for me. I am also not a fan of goats cheese...too strong for my likes.
Thanks again for your review! :goodvibes

I have found that the chefs at the restaurants are very accomodating. Most times they are willing to substitute or leave something off. I have three teens of which two are picky eaters. :)

Believe it or not, the ostrich do not taste like chicken at all. It taste more like red meat to me. If you didn't know it's ostrich, you thought you were eating beef. It does not taste gamey at all.

If you think your son may not like the sauce on the steak I would definitely ask for it on the side. I had this dish, and while it was very tasty, I wasn't thrilled w/the mac and cheese being in the sauce and there was no way around that. I think it would be best to ask for it separate and then if he likes it, just pour it over the steak, or over both.

Jiko's appetizers are more adventurous (and better tasting) than the entrees. I've never had any appetizer or soup here that I didn't absolutely love. The entrees are hit and miss, even the favored filet with mac n cheese. I've had that one 3 times and it's been great, okay and meh. I'd stay away from the chicken dish as it's a bit spicier than the other entrees. And the short ribs definitely have a coffee flavor so if you don't care for that taste, you probably won't care for those (I did not but I'm not a coffee drinker).

I think Jiko is a nice restaurant for Disney, a little bit out of the ordinary but not so much that it's full of food you've never tried before.

Jiko is one of our favorite restaurants at Disney. You can definitely ask for things on the side and make substitutions.

I recommend the BBQ pizza and green apple flatbread-it's out-of-this-world :thumbsup2. The ostrich is excellent as well. It is a unique flavor but closer to red meat than poultry. As far as entrees the filet is very good as is the Lamb and Tanglewood Chicken dish.

Enjoy:)

FYI, you can get sauces on the side.

We had an incredible me meal here in Oct 08 but we went back Nov 09 and the filet with mac was terrible. Loved the salad and dessert but I dont think we will be back anytime soon

our least favorite meal of the trip...only high point were the apps. The filet was terrible and the service aweful. For a great meal with more adventurous choices I would go to BOMA for both breakfast and dinner.

Jiko is absolutely WONDERFUL! The food is amazingly delicious. This is one of the best meals I have ever had. I would definitely try it out! :thumbsup2

We love Jiko. I had the steak with mac and cheese once. It was okay, but, frankly, IMO there are better entrees on the menu. I love the shrimp dish. We also like to get appetizers. And, the last time we were there, they had fresh made cinnamon donuts for dessert that were unbelievably yummy!

As has been posted above just ask for the sauce on the side - they are very accomodating and this won't be a problem. As that is your travel day and you are staying there, Jiko would definitely be the best choice for dinner.

Enjoy!

Jiko is excellent and they are more than happy to change sides, sauces etc., you'll love it and more important I think your son will too.

We love Jiko. You can see their menu at:

The only thing I have to watch out for there is that they use goat cheese in some dishes (as stated on teh menu descriptions) and I just dont like it. So, I order things that dont have it. I would recomend it. Disney is a great place to try some new dishes and Jiko is a cool place to dine!

The Filet with Mac and Cheese is very overrated IMO, Jiko is my favorite restaurant on property, but definately not the Filet.

What dishes do you love?? I'd be interested in knowing which entrees are especially delicious! :)

Before I visited Jikos I just couldn't imagine what fillet, mac and cheese and red wine all tasted like together. It seemed a weird combination to me, but then I tried it and absolutely loved it. Have been back to Jikos several times since, and last time sat in a great quiet side little room which was lovely. In fact this meal was the best of the trip outdoing Cali Grill.
