Jiko Filet and Mac n' Cheese

So after the marathon we went to Jiko for dinner. The waiter was like do you have any questions, so I was like well I have one, the filet... and he interrupted immediately and was like I can certainly get you filet and mac n' cheese. He actually said that although the chef changed the menu its still far and away the most ordered item, and that no one in their right mind would end something that sold so well. In addition i'd say easily 3/4 dishes that went past our table that night were filet and mac n' cheese. Keep requesting disboarders

Nice to see that people are letting their voices be heard. Why on earth that combination was removed is still a mystery beyond my wildest imagining.

It reminds me of the Fantasmic story line, something wonderful is hi-jacked by evil forces, and good must right the evil.

thanks for the head's up. We were so disappointed that they'd taken the filet w/mac & cheese off the menu that we considered going to another restaurant in May. Jiko here we come!

I know I was so upset. But we were staying in Jambo and the night after the marathon so I was kinda tired it was just too good of an arrangement. Then I found out it was still there and I was ecstatic.

I didn't even know that they had taken this off the menu!! I wouldn't eat here if I couldn't order it, and it's my favorite place to eat on site.

In October I heard multiple tables being denied. One server even went to speak to the chef and then came back and said sorry, but no.

We ate there on October 22nd (4 weeks ago) and 2 in our party got the mac and cheese, one got the filet with mashed potatoes. I got it with the menu listed risotto which everyone agreed was better than the mac and cheese (I let everyone taste mine).

My guess would be that since Chef Annette was no longer here and that was her dish, that is one of the reasons it changed. When a new Executive Chef comes on board, they start bringing in their own influences and phasing out other dishes. I've seen this happen at Citricos when Chef Gray left as well.

I found that since Chef Annette left, the overall dish has been hit and miss depending on who was making it. Once there was too much of the wine reduction and it overpowered the meat and the pasta. The next time the reduction was fine but the mac & cheese was bad. It looked like it sat under a heat lamp for 20 minutes and dried out - not creamy at all.

I am now debating to go back to Jiko on my next trip (and Jiko had always been one of my go to places) or to try Boma this time since I've never been.

I'm glad that people are making their requests heard. When the kitchen is on, this dish is delish and well worth keeping on the menu. To me, a signature dish should remain as long as it's popular and turning a profit.

Oh I didn't know they had Mashed POtatoes...my dh would eat that....were they just basic? gravy??

I had no idea Jiko had a Filet and Mac 'n' Cheese or I would've gone there a long time ago. I'm definitely making that a must for the future provided they still honor requests for that entree!

Thank you for posting that. I don't understand why the majority are so reluctant to try the chef's improvements to the dish. If people really want a filet with mac and cheese that badly, Boatwrights makes a great one.

The main reason I'm considering it is because we are staying at AKL for just 2 nights and I thought it would save us some travel time to stay at the resort, but my DH is a very basic eater, so I'm trying to decide if this is a good move for us.....someone posted something about Mashed Potatoes....anyone know if they are basic??

The mashed potatoes were basic, no gravy.

Honestly, the risotto was good enough to eat on it's own, no filet needed. I've had the Mac and Cheese before and thought it was okay but the risotto went better with the meat IMO.

I've dined there 3 times since that dish changed and there is always someone in our party who asks for it the old way.

Whoa glad to know my original thread had been so useful, now a year later I google hoping for an update as I'm returning to the world in 3 weeks and I get my own thread. I'm staying at AKL so of course I'm going to go if they have my favorite meal ever. So another update in a couple weeks .
