JFK to NYC cruise port?

Based on what I've read here, I should avoid LGA at all costs. So I'm thinking JFK (it's $20 cheaper airfare apiece than EWR, plus I'm guessing it's more expensive from EWR to the port)

What's the best value way to get from JFK to the Manhattan cruise port? We have carryon luggage only, so we can walk a block or two, but I don't want a 30-minute walk.

Thanks!

Also, what are the fast (relatively :)) options for the return trip?

Taxis are a flat fee into Manhattan from JFK - I am not sure what it is now as I am a public transportation girl (and if I do take a taxi I'm going to Brooklyn which is metered anyway).

A taxi is probably going to be your best bet heading back as well to avoid having to walk as the waterfront is around 4-6 blocks from the subway. (12th is not horrible to cross - you just either choose to walk down a couple of blocks to the overpass or you push the button and wait for the light (please no playing Frogger on the West Side Highway (common name of 12th) - but the subway station aren't going to be until 8th.)

Thanks! What public transport would you recommend from JFK to the port?

(oh wait, never mind--you said subway goes only as close as 4-6 blocks to the port. That might be a bit much for DD13 and me)

I'm thinking Uber/Lyft to/from JFK? I read elsewhere that you can wait a long time for a taxi from the port, but Uber/Lyft can pick you up from the same spot.

There is not easy public transit from JFK to the port so I wouldn't do that.

Uber/Lyft is not flat fee so you might run into extra cost just depends on traffic. I've had Ubers as little as 20 bucks form JFK to the port and as high as 100. On the flip side yellow cab will always be 52 plus tip and tolls if I remember correctly.

Also just not EWR is actually easier to get to the port because the cruise terminal is on the west side of the city and JFK is on the east side on the far east side of queens.

OK, looking at Google maps, the public transit option doesn't look too bad, is cheap, and about as fast (1 hour) as Lyft/taxi.

Two questions though:
1. Walk from Jamaica station to Sutphin Blvd/JFK station: Google says "Use caution: may involve errors or sections not suitable for walking". Does that mean you can't get from one to another?
2. Google says it's a 14 minute walk from the subway stop at 50th St and 8th Ave, through Hell's Kitchen, to the cruise port. I've never been to that part of NYC, is it safe for me and DD13?

Thanks all!

1) I would personally NEVER use the E-train station (Jamaica) - it is confusing and you have to go in and out of a train station. You can walk it - it's just a pain and confusing. I use the Howard Beach/A-train option. Much more straightforward. That takes you to 42nd and you can change to a C or E train there right across the platform and go one more stop to 50th.

2) Hell's Kitchen is pretty much right next to the Theatre District. It's generally a safe area. It gets a little more industrial as you get closer to the river, but I've never had an issue.

Thanks!

Google says though that taking the A train (AirTrain Green from JFK to Howard Beach) takes almost 2 hours. I'd rather take an hour. Can you tell me how to get from Jamaica station to Sutphin?

No - I did it once about 8 years ago and said ever again. I never found the A to take 2 hours.

Just to add - I'm sure there are probably signs. I just remember having to go through a train station and outside. The one time I had to do it because the A wasn't running to Howard Beach or something.

That is another thing to note: If you're coming in on a weekend, there is likely to be track work that could even put you on a bus for part of the trip.

How much luggage will you have? Those walks are not fun with luggage. I use to live in Hell's Kitchen and sure walking to the port is 15 minutes but that is with out heavy suitcases and having gone up and down several flights of stairs after traveling long distances.

Wheeled carryon only.

My wife and I ( both in our 60s) walked from Penn Station (34th St) through Hells Kitchen and back for 2 Disney cruises and found it safe. The only problem was my wife shopping in the garment district on the way back.

The biggest problem will be the stairs getting in and out of the subway station unless you are lucky to use ones with elevators.

What time do you land is a big issue as well. Are you coming in a day early or are you landing and need to the cruise ASAP.

The E train may be an option but any good NYer known that if you need to get someone where on time with the MTA you have to plan to be super early (especially lately)

I did Google Street View for the cruise terminal...coming from 50th St, is it pretty clear where you enter?

Same day. Plane lands at 10:30a, so we're fine even if it takes a couple of hours.

We have always crossed at the Intrepid air and space museum and then walked north to the Cruise Port. The Cruise Port is the two terminals just north of the museum.

kay1864,

Here's the best resource you'll find for Uber Costs from Airport to Cruise Port.

TO PORT: How much does an Uber cost from JFK Airport to New York City Cruise Port?

  • UberX: $72.50
  • UberXL: $110.00
FROM PORT: How much does an Uber cost from New York City Cruise Port to JFK Airport ?

On that web page, they also have all costs from EWR and LGA, so feel free to check that out.

Hope it helps!

The airtran at JFK will take you to the Jamaica station for $5. From there yo can get a train to Penn station which is not far. Idon't remember the fair but it's not much. We are in or 60's and 70 and walk from Penn station to the terminal. It's a bit of a hike but not bad. Of course if you don't want to walk more than a few blocks you can do Uber for the short trip from Penn to the terminal. We come in fro, long Island and love to cruise out of NYC.
