Never had any problems with jet lag on the way to the US but have found that everyone was awake v. early for the first few days!

Jet lag is worse coming back.

Not really had a problem but i know i was in bed for about 7 the first few days, but up really early.

The kids were fine i don't think the noticed.

Every visit I've made, I've always been up at 3am on the first morning. I find the trick is to stay awake for as long as you can on the day you arrive, set your watches to US time the moment you leave the UK also. Works for all my family except me :-(

We find if the children have a little "nap" on the plane on the way out they are then fine for the evening and just get up a tad early the next day. They are then on USA time :)

On the way back they adapt very well and are back to normal within a day or so. For us grown ups it takes rather longer, LOL

LoL - Now coming back's a different story for me, last time my 2 year old awoke at 2am for a whole week afterwards

My kids won't sleep on the plane

Instead of sitting quietly and having a nap because they're tired, they'd rather moan about not being there yet, about being bored, how tired they are etc etc. Grrr.

Well goto sleep then, have a nap. (And give me and mum a bit of peace?)

Fat chance!

The only good thing is that because they're up for so long, by the time is does come to bed time in Florida they really are whacked out. We put them to bed and thats it until at least 8am Florida time. From here on its straight forward, and they took to it quite well. On the way back however ....

Again, my kids won't sleep on the plane

Nope. They stay awake for the whole flight, which for the most part is in darkness and we land around 7am UK time. Other people on the plane try to sleep (I'd love too!) but my kids decide to stay awake, no matter how annoying, for as long as is humanly possible. Then, as soon as we get into the car they fall asleep.

And I have the "pleasure" of playing a combination of Motorhead / Thin Lizzy / Deep Purple or whatever takes my fancy in revenge! Coming back is the killer - it takes me a couple of days to get over it. If only my kids would sleep on the plane (like every other sane individual!) it wouldn't be so bad! I love my kids to bits I just wish they had an off button at times!

Andru - I think you've got my kids there!!

On the way out we never have a problem, the kids are fine for a visit to stock up on food and a swim in the pool. We try and keep them up as late as possible but they're normally ready for bed by 8. They dont seem as tired as they would be at 1am back home.

Everyone is up at 5am the next day. We always schedule the Magic Kingdom for our frst day as it needs the earliest start.

We're then pretty much OK.

Chelseas fantastic on the flights from the age of 2,(she is now 5) she sleeps going, and coming home she is wide awake but is amused with all the films we have never had a problem with jet lag for her, especially when going you are on such a high coming home, she is fine depite us being totally wasted :confused3 but thats another story kids are more tolerant and different in how they handle it compared to us parents.

Andru I sense a common theme running through your flights!!!

Well goto sleep then, have a nap. (And give me and mum a bit of peace?)

The way out for us wasn't too bad, last time the boys were 6 and 8, it was the way back that was the problem.

The little one slept most of the way back, but that boy can sleep anywhere and was most put out that I didn't wake him for breakfast. :teeth: The older one watched films all night, (well, James Bond was on and nothing interupts that, including sleep!) and then crashed out in the car.

It takes me longer to get back in the swing of it coming home, it takes a few days to get back into the UK time. Unfortunately this time the boys have got to go back to school the following day.

It's never been much of a problem on the way out for us. When DDs were much younger they'd just crash out as soon as we got to the hotel (if not on the way there ;) ) and then we're all up very early for the first couple of mornings and make the most of it by hitting the parks for opening. We go back to the hotel for an afternoon rest and don't stay out too late the first couple of nights and by then we're in tune with US time.

On the way home we always try to have a Friday flight back so that we have the weekend to recover before it's back to work / school / whatever! When we get home we force ourselves to stay awake until at least 9pm ( ), and try to get up at a 'normal' time the following day. It seems to work for us :)
