The JetBlue Basic fare says no carryon bags. Curious if anyone knows if that is just specific for bags that you were to put overhead. Looking to book the cheapest fare for my daughter who would just be bringing a backpack. She will be flying alone so I don't want her to get questioned at the gate. Anyone know?

From the website
Each customer with a Blue Basic fare is allowed one personal item (purse, small backpack, briefcase, laptop, etc.) that fits under the seat in front of you. A carry-on bag is not allowed and cannot be brought on board.

It has to be a small backpack. Anything else, purse for example, has to be put in the backpack.

Check the size. If the backpack is too big it will be checked $$$$ at the gate

The above is correct - regular backpack is fine. I have carried a Vera Bradley disney "campus backpack" and put it underneath in front of me and that is fine. It's kinda big but it fits under the seat and no one has ever said anything. As long as it fits under the seat in front and is not on your lap, you are good.

All true! I often book that fare when travelling alone, because it also limits when you can choose your seat. You have to wait until 24 hours prior and are sometimes stuck with a middle seat. And they are strict about the policy, I was told at least twice before boarding my last flight that my bag had to fit under my seat (it did). There was another passenger who also booked the basic fare and his bag would not fit. The flight attendant took his bag and he had to pay $50 on the spot for them to move it to the baggage compartment. If you are travelling alone and aren't too fussy about where you sit, this can be a good savings. I find it is often cheaper to book this category and pay the $30 fee to check a bag than it is to pay the blue fare and be allowed one bag in the overhead compartment. I am not one of those people who hates to wait at baggage claim. I don't love it but it doesn't bother me. And I'm not good at packing light!

you need one item that will fit under the seat. Anything else you have, needs to fit inside that bag.

The plane I'm going on doesn't have middle seats, so I'm going to try it.
