So I kept nagging at DF to call jet blue to find out what can be done about my wedding gown, and he finally did last night only to be told by a reservation agent (quite rudely, he added) that the only option would be to CHECK the dress, or stuff it in an overhead bin...:confused3 :faint:

This did not please any of us and we started to think of other ways to get there...we have two sets of couples driving down, but one couple smokes, and I don't feel like smelling like an ashtray as I saunter down the aisle, and while the other one is great...just common sense tells me they would naturally want to eat during their trip, and I don't feel like smelling like fries and special sauce, lettuce, cheese on a sesame seed bun, either.

So I had to go the next route and ask my mom to carry my dress. She's flying Continental, who we called and who informed us that while they couldn't guarantee anything, that they might have space in their closet...

I'm more at peace knowing that my worst case scenario is the overhead bin than having that be my only choice. I guess I might have to call carolyn allens anyway, but we'll see.

DF said that the jetblue person told him to go to the yellow pages and just ship the dress. Talk about customer service...I called them this morning to complain about the person and ask again but while she was apologetic, she confirmed that they have no closets on their planes.

Plan ahead girls!

DF and me decided this weekend that we would drive down. I said that I don't really want to trust anyone else with my dress and I don't want to have to check it.

That is whats happened to me! I booked my Escape wedding and flights (not only for me and my DF but for 17 guests) thought Virgin. And was then told that we get NO extra cases or anything for my huge wedding dress! I was then passed on to someone else who was very rude and told me to "stuff it in my hand luggage" !!!! I have no idea what to do now!

I'm in with you guys.......We booked airtran and they told me they have no closet space and I either have to check it or stuff it in overhead bin!!! Are you kidding!!!!!!!!!!!

Just so you know, most airlines don't have enough closet space on the plane to store a dress. They are really only equipped to hold a few coats.... The easiest way to get your dress where it needs to be is to ship it.

Thanks for the tip...I'm a Jetblue flyer...but...Looks like we will have to work around these issues.

We were told this last year and i was very concerned. I was even told to "Spacesaver" it and then roll it up and place it in the overhead...

I was told that works but i was so fearful of the dress popping up after it was space saved!!!!:rotfl:

Just a question, but are you planning to get it steamed before you wear it for the wedding? If so then what does it matter if you fold it in one of those rolling small luggage & have it in the overhead bin? The important thing to me would have been knowing it was with me 100% of the time & knowing no one else had handled it other than me. Had I not shipped my dress to my mom(I smushed my dress into the smallest ball ever) I would have just done that. When I got it steamed the day before the wedding it looked perfect.

nooo - your joking- i want to fly with virgin and i was told that they can be very nice and sometimes hang your dress up in first class or in the staff cabins ... i am jus tgonig to take my dress over my arm- no hand luggage- it WILL come on the plane with me ..

keep checking with virgin- and as soon as someone says you can take it on board - get them to email it or confirm it on paper- then they cannot say no at the airport.

Well, I'm confused...I could leave the dress with my mom...but I really didn't want to put all the pressure on her.

Jet Blue clearly says on their website (I just read)

Closets for hanging garment bags are not available on our aircraft.

But our flight is empty and DF is wondering if we can just let it "rest" in a seat next to us..of course, we both see the flight is empty and then I see an account balance and I ask him what the heck is going on and he said he wanted to surprise me with the "more legroom" seats in hopes of just letting the dress drape in an empty seat next to us...sigh...and I ruined the surprise by looking it up...

He's too sweet...i'm a really lucky bride to be...

I don't know what to do or what the flight attendants would say...I'm checking and seeing that the overhead bins are kinda small but other than take off and landing, maybe the dress can drape or get buckled into an empty seat???

I know I have options...I just really wanted to carry my dress with me...:sad2:

I Carried my Dress on and no one batted an eye. I even got permission to board early and I took up a whole overhead bin. I just placed my dress in and shut it. No one even tried to open it.

We flew Delta and I ended up checking my dress. I didn't want to risk it being denied as a carry on because of size, so I didn't even try to bring it on with me. I wasn't super thrilled about checking it, especially because my dress was HUGE, but in the end I figured it was safer flying under me than traveling ahead of me to the resort or Carolyn Allen's. We have a large suitcase and I just folded the dress in half and zipped it up.

It was wrinkly when it came back out, but it smoothed itself out when I left it hanging up for four days. In the end, as much as I didn't want to check it, it was a lot easier and cheaper than doing anything else.

We have talked about this too, even though we have a year to figure things out, but we need to save now. We live in TX and the flights to Orlando run about 300/person. Shipping the dress 50-100. Taxi ride to courthouse for marriage license(this was before we found a site we could do it on without paying and extra $100) another 85+. With all that we decided it would be best to just drive the 18hrs across and that way I don't have to worry about the dress. I just feel best having it with me and not someone else having to worry about it.:confused3

My grandparents don't fly... they are taking the autotrain and they have offered to drive my dress down for me.

Is anyone else who is going to your wedding driving down? They may be able to bring it for you.

I went with Virgin in November and had to check my dress in. I was worried but it was fine, all got there in one piece! I used one of the hard shell suitcases and the bridal shop where i got my dress packed it all for me so when I got it out it didn't even need steaming, just hung up for the 5 days before the wedding. It is a scary moment as your dress goes off down the conveyor belt, hoping you will see it at the other end! But i'm sure it will be totally fine :thumbsup2

I was told this by jetblue also. I was also told they wouldn't lay it out for me on a seat (if there was an empty one). So I rolled my dress in a sheet and put it in a carryon. I stuffed the bodice with a towel to sort of keep the shape. My dress was a full crinolin skirt though, no satin to wrinkle. I did not have it steamed before the ceremony.
I should have had it steamed before my at home reception as it didn't look that great after 2 plane trips and 1 day of wearing. But, it was only the home reception so I didn't care that much.

Good luck and happy wedding!

I emailed Virgin a while backand they also told me they have no hanging space for a dress.

They advised I put a waterproof covering on outside the case (ie bin bags!!) and label it up as wedding garments so people knew to take better care of it, but I'm not sure about all that really......

I did this same thing. I had emailed USAir before our flight and asked if they had closet space and they said no. So I just put it in the overhead bin. We had DH tux too and that went up there as well.

Hulagirl and Goldeelox -
But don't they now check the sizes of anything you're carrying on with you?

So how do you think you managed to get away with something that sounds like it was bigger than normal allowance?
Eg, if I tried this, what would happen if they told me the dress bag was too big? I need your tips!!

I was in a wedding in Santa Barbara last fall (I live in Phoenix) and carried on my bridesmaid dress with me (not the same as a wedding dress I know). Anyway I'm a frequent flyer with US Airways, and even in first class the option I had was to either take the dress out of the garment bag and hang it with the coats (obviously it wasn't as big as a wedding dress) or put it in an overhead bin.

The flight attendant told me this was do to FAA regulations, that it couldn't be hanging in a bag, it had to be out of the garment bag.

Both flights (to and from) they were super nice, and found over head bins where they could lay my dress flat across suit cases.

To be fair (and I really am not trying to be rude or start a fight), as a passenger on a flight, especially with how much it costs to check bags, I'd be a little frustrated if an entire overhead bin (so 2 since they connect) was being occupied by 1 dress, and my bag couldn't be checked.
