If anything this is an important lesson on the later part about only allowing people to drive a car that are authorized to do so by the rental company. Additionally, coverages by credit cards and other forms of coverage only apply if they are used for the rental..

The no-cars available does happen sometimes but downgrades happen more often if a location is oversold or due to unforeseen circumstances (ie. weather conditions) prevent cars from being returned on time.

Well, not all of it - the damage or the unauthorized driver - but yes, I've made a reservation, waited in a long line (systems were down so everything had to be done by hand), completed the paperwork, dragged my luggage to the garage, and... NO CARS!

Not just no cars in my reserved catetgory, but no drivable cars period. Just one with locked doors and no key. And no staff. So back down to the counter where I interrupt the lone agent, who sends me back up to the garage and says there'll be someone up there. Nope. So I stood there yelling "help!" and finally somebody showed up with a single midsize car... with squealing brakes. By now it was 3:30 AM and I'd been awake about 24 hours, so I took it and left.

When things happen to me like that, I feel i need to beat somebody. I can not understand how i might not find a car in the garage after I rented already! Anyway , seinfeld still makes me laugh.

Makes me think of Steve Martin in Planes, Trains and Automobiles.
