Jen's Journal.....Baby Steps to a new me

Hi Jen,

Sounds like you are busy as usual! Great job on your goals. I'm sure your last speach will be great. It sounds like a very moving subject.

Take care!

Sunny

Hi everyone-
I have realized i wont be able to do it all, but i am actually okay with that for once..I am just trying to do what i can and take control of things that i can control..Im watching the eating most of all right now..

This weekend will not count ;) We are having a huge party/picnic at my house and its only once a year, so i may splurge a bit..

Other tjan that, my brother passed his firefighters test and graduates the 29th..i am so proud of him!
Hope you all have a great weekend!

Congrats to your brother, Jen! I bet you and your family are so proud! :firefight

I have a question, Jen.... Could you do the commemorative speech about Alyssa? You have those wonderful photo collages that you could use and you could talk about her life, how her life impacted yours, and the K-Ride.

Hope you have a great weekend! :sunny:

I tried posting a response to you a couple days ago tracy--I think that it would be too hard for me to write about alyssa right now..The memories are too raw.

i have been meaning to come here and post--i need some prayers.
On saturday, we were having what was supposed to be a huge picnic at my house..i was upstairs watching a movie with a friend around 430ish, and my brother came screaming up the stairs that there was an accident in front of our house. My friend Brad and i ran down the stairs and out to the street..There were 2 cars smashed against a tree..My brother (first responder), dad (Firemen), mom (nurse) all ran down to the scene..A bunch of our guests were firemen and EMT's so they all went down as well. I stayed at the house fetching blankets, towels, and umbrellas (it was raining buckets). Next thing i know they are telling me to get people to move their cars, as a chopper needs to land..We couldnt find a guest (it was my great aunt who went to church) so the firemen and my uncles picked up her car to move it.
As i was running around , i was constantly thinking if it was someone coming to our house..My cousin came up to me and said we needed to talk. I went in the other room with her and she told me that it was a firefighter that my dad works with, as well as his daughter and niece. I broke down crying then. Luckily, my best friend was there..it was horrible, i just clung to him crying.
The fire dept for my town was absolutley horrible and couldnt get the roof off of the car for about an hour. of course, there goes the "critical hour" for trauma victims.. My "family" firemen were down there and it was driving them crazy not being able to h elp, knowing it was one of their guys in the car. Eventually, they got them out of the car and went to the hospital. My dad, as well as 30 other guys went after the ambulences and stayed at the hospital for hours.

It is looking pretty bad. This is the latest update as of today. the dad had surgery today to try to repair some of the damage..He has a broken ankle, fractured pelvis, left ribs all broken, punctured lung, massive internal bleeding, lacerated kidney, and was in a coma. When i was at the hospital last night, his wife said that he was squeezing her hand and not wanting to let go, so that seems like it is a good sign.
His daughter had a lacerated spleen and was moved to a different hospital. She hasnt had to have surgery and they said that if her blood counts continue to go up, she wont need surgery. The niece has a fractured pelvis and a possible broken ankle--something impaled her foot.

The car was a total disaster..>Its been a really rough couple of days and my family (both "real" and firemen) is devastated. Please keep us in your prayers if you can.. Thank you!

Hang in there, Jen. You did the right thing by posting this here. You'll get a TON of prayers, and that's the best thing right now.

If you need anything....you know where I am.

Newest update...

My dad was at the hospital today talking to Alex's wife. Alex had surgery today to repair his kidneys, liver, took out the spleen, inserted 2 chest tubes, did a urostomy because the urinary system is damaged. He is still on ventilator and they will be doing a trach this week. They put in a feeding tube. They found out today that he has broken cervical vertabrae. He is in a coma still, they think it is partly medically induced. He does realize when there were people in the room. My dad and his wife were talking and Alex's heartrate spiked-so they think he is reacting to the surrounding noise. The nurse tried to limit visitors to just family and the wife said no . She said the firemen need to see him and that as long as they do not make noise, she thinks they should be able to go in. They are not doing anything about his ribs, pelvis, or lung right now. They are seeing how he reacts to the surgery and it is a wait and see to see what the next step is. The wife also told my dad that we shouldnt be guilty that he was coming to our house. She was glad it happened where it did where we had so many EMTs, firefighters, and cops..

Tonight, in my public speaking class, my brother wrote a speech about the events of this weekend. The entire class was quiet, he was shaking reading it, and i was crying in the back of the room. The entire family, firemen and ours, is having a rough time. I failed a test today in a class that i got a 97 and 100 on the other tests.. i talked to the professor and he hugged me and told me not to worry about it that i would still get a good grade...Im still not eating or sleeping very well.. My brother said that he cant sleep because he keeps hearing the little girl saying "please help me, i want to get out of here"
Thank you ALL so much for your thoughts and prayers..I will keep you all updated if you would like..We all appreciate it so much!

Absolutely keep us informed....let the prayers begin.... :grouphug:

:grouphug: Jen,

Sweetie, I am so very sorry. :sad1: Alex, his family, your family, and everyone involved are in my thoughts and prayers. :grouphug: If you need anything, please let us know.

Yet another update--

Ive had some PMs asking for an update..I went to the hospital yesterday and again tonight. I got to see him in the trauma ICU. He has alot of machines hooked up and everything..but he looked better than what i was picturing. He is still on the ventilator, and will be having surgery in a couple of days to do a trach. His fever has broken. The other injuries are still the same. They are basically holding off on things to see how and when he stabilizes more.

His daughter will be leaving the hospital soon hopefully, and his niece went home yesterday.

The fire department held a blood drive today and received 105 units of blood, as well as some cash donations. We are working on putting together some fundraisers to help out the family and it looks like the newspaperse are already reporting that and some checks have been coming in--thats going to be such a huge help to the family!

Thank you ALL for all of your prayers--i told them that i have so many people asking about them and praying.t.hey say thank you

Thanks for the update, Jen. Your family and Alex's family are in my prayers!

This weekend is going to be very laid back i hope-Last weekend was crazy and im really looking forward to just doing nothing. Im thinking about taking a book out by the pool and reading for a bit. My work is closed Tuesday, so that will be a nice way to break up the week.

About my professors-they were great! I ended up getting an A in both of my science classes..And that is with getting a 54 on my final--the professor has even emailed me to see how Alex was doing--i thought that was just so nice!

i am hopefully going to the hospital today or tomorrow to see alex. He had a trach done a couple of days ago and they said he is looking better since then. I just saw a message that they are going to be selling tshirts they got donated so all of the money will go to alex's family..so i think they will sell well--I guarentee most of the firemen will be buying at least one. Other than that, i know were doing a roast beef dinner and some other fundrasiers--at least it feels like im doing SOMETHING!

well hope everyone is doing well, off to relax!! have a great weekend!

Have a relaxing weekend, Jen! :goodvibes

Alex, his family, and everyone involved remain in our thoughts and prayers. :grouphug:

I have a new update on the firemen..and this is a better update! I just checked his carepage (where a family member puts updates everyday) and they said today he seemed to be VERY responsive! He opened up his eyes and tried to look at people when they walked in. He was squeezing hands harder..He even attempted to pucker up his lips to kiss people. He is not considered out of the woods yet, of course-He received a pint of blood today but his hemoglobin level is okay.
This is some of the best news that we have gotten so far and we are just hoping and praying the news coninues to get better...I will be going to the hospital tomorrow or tuesday and will let you guys know how that goes, but wnated to share some "better" news for a change!

:cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2:

That's GREAT news, Jen. Thanks so much for the update.

How are YOU doin?

Kim-First, im hanging in there..I am starting to be able to sleep and eat without throwing up again. It seems like it has been so much longer than it has though.

Now, my exciting news for the day!! I got out of work early so met up with my dad and brother to do some errands..We went to the firehouse, where i was told alex was awake!!! After that, we went to the hospital. They said he was sleeping and my brother and dad went in...After that was my turn. I went in with my dad, and we were in for less than 5 minutes. While we were there, he twitched his leg. I saw his eyes open a tiny bit, and then he opened them all the way and left them open! He looked right at me and you could see his lips moving, as if he were trying to talk or kiss me hello. He lifted up his hand off the bed and my dad held his hand and Alex was squeezing. When my dad let his hand go, he reached for my hand. I held on and squeezed and smiled at him. He squeezed back pretty hard!!
So he is not out of the woods yet at all, but this is a great improvment!!! I was thrilled seeing him respond to me like that--Please keep the prayers coming--THEY ARE WORKING!! thanks!

MORE good news!!! My dad just called and said he talked to the wife and daughter. ALEX IS TRYING TO TALK and is a ctually making sounds!!!!!! This is a BIG step for him and we are all thrilled. He also wrote something down to try and communicate..please keep the prayers coming--they are working! this is more than we could have hoped for this soon after the accident..I will be going to the hospital thursday after work hopefully so i will update again then!

Just stoppin by to say HOWDY. Hope all is going well for you today.

Thanks again for all of the friendship and support you give me. I don't know what I did before you. :grouphug:
