just saw a news clip on jellyfish invasion in our local beaches! wonder why...but they looked reddish/purplish! the news clip mentioned that every 5/6 years, they get jellyfish invasion! maybe it's the west coast thing? the best thing to do to treat jellyfish sting is to pour vinegar on it. stated that it neutralizes the sting. so i'm thinking maybe we should pack vinegar? hmm...just thought i'd pass this along! :flower:

They are all over the west coast this year. I definitely would watch out for them. Here is one that DH saw at Catalina Island last month.

Jelly Fish are quite common in our waterways in Virginia. We always carry a bottle of "meat tenderizer" in our emergency kit when we go out on our jet skiis. Just mix the dry tenderizer with a bit of fresh water, make a paste and apply to sting area. The pain is gone in a matter of seconds.

Does anyone watch friends?? Remember (I think it was Joey and Monica) one of them was stung by a jellyfish and one of them told the other to pee on it to make it better!!! :rotfl: YUK!!!

Connecticut is approaching the jelly fish season! Our waters get pretty warm in August and that's when we start seeing them more. I remember as a kid catching them, bringing them to shore on the sand and then stabbing them with a stick and we thought it was funny....what were we thinking????? :guilty:

The jellyfish are here in San Diego -- oldest ds went to the beach the other day and got stung :(

DH worked as a lifeguard for a couple summers in high school / college. Use a weak ammonia / water solution for sting pain relief in a pinch. He said one time they "peed" on a surfer who got stung badly, and were thanked by him afterward...just like 6Griswolds points out...its true.

The visual of a lifeguard whipping out you know what to pee on a surfer makes me wanna laugh. What a sight that was to see I'm sure. I can't imagine!!!! :rotfl:

HA, I thought of this also as soon as I read the first message in this thread about vinegar - although the technical reason given on Friends was the ammonia! I LOVE Joey's line: "That's right, I'd pee on any of you too!!!" :rotfl2: - even though of course he's NOT the one to do the deed - poor Chandler had to step up and do the deed.

All I can say is eeuww!

Got stung in Nassau just last week on the Carribean Queen Snorkle excursion
They used peroxide on the boat -it didn't help much
When we got back to the ship I called Medical Services and they said to use hydrocortisone ointment

We were out on Boston Harbor the other day and saw lots of jelly fish. Not a common sight up here. I've seen a few while snorkeling in the family area at Castaway Cay.
