Jello & Pretzel Dessert?

I had this at my close friends' house and loved it. They always have some unique recipes to share. The problem is: I made this today and I don't know what I did wrong, but the whipped topping and the jello mixed into one beg mess on top of the pretzels during assembly! I used to work in a gourmet bakery so I thought I should be able to handle something as simple as this, but what went wrong? :confused3

Hmmm I don't like pretzels or jello so I doubt I'd be a fan. Of course I don't like Elizabeth Hasselbeck either and probably wouldn't ever try anything she'd ever suggest! LOL! My dad LOVES the jello pretzel stuff though.

I also am not a huge fan of pretzels, and I despise jello, but this stuff is awesome. I first had some at a party when I was in grad school (15+ years ago) and it was one of those things where I *had* to eat some to be polite. (my advisor brought it and offered it to me personally...) I expected to have to wash it down with my drink with a fake smile plastered on my face, but I ended up asking for the recipe! LOL

My guess is you didn't chill the whipped topping part long enough. My recipe says to chill for 30 minutes before adding the jello, so maybe the topping hadn't set well enough?

This shows me that no matter what people do with jello, you can always find someone who'll eat it:rolleyes1:confused3

:lmao: Ain't it the truth...

I've had this concoction once before and I thought it was pretty hideous. There's usually just way too many other good things to eat a party.

But, to each his own!

The pretzel Jello salad, my wife is the one who makes it for the family dinners.

I had 2 pieces, had my wife go get me another piece, then talked my daughter into getting me a 4th so I didn't look bad walking out to the kitchen 4 times for it :rotfl2:

I have tried to talk Wifey into making it more often just for us, but she says she will only make it for holidays/get-togethers :sad1:

The key is cooling the pretzels after baking. Then the cream cheese, cool whip topping can go on. The jello also has to be semi firm but still "pourable" before putting it on top of the cream layer. I just plop the strawberries on the jello layer after it's poured.

I make this stuff several times a year, and we all love it. They used to serve it in the dorms in college, and I had to find the recipe after I "grew up".

I make a pineapple pretzel salad that is awesome! Everyone loves it. I don't measure but it's really simple to make. This is all I do.

Crush the pretzel sticks and mix them with a melted butter and sugar mixture, (all I do is "shake n bake" it in a large ziplock back) once the pretzels are coated, layer the bottom of a 9x13 aluminum pan. Don't forget to bake! Only takes about 10-15 minutes in a 350 oven.

Whip 2 tubs of cool whip and 2 blocks of cream cheese and add a little confectioner's sugar.

Take 2 cans of crushed pinapple and 1 large tablespoon of cornstarch and boil so the pinapple thickens.

After pretzels and pineapple is cool, layer the cool whip mixture onto the pretzels and then the pineapple onto the cool whip and pop in the fridge.
YUMMY!!!

:thumbsup2

The one time I messed up this dessert was when I rushed it and didn't let the pretzels cool completely. It did the same thing that loveWDWalways's did and turned into a globby mess.

Another tip: Make sure the cream cheese/cool whip mixture completely covers the pretzels. Otherwise, you get soggy pretzels.

This is TOO funny that there is a thread about the Pretzel Jello Salad!!! My family asks me to make this EVERY birthday/holiday/special occasion, you name it so I asked my mom if she wanted me to make it for Thanksgiving. She says, "No, we have enough desserts just bring some pumpkin pie."

Okay, fine w/me. As amazing as the pretzel jello salad is, it is a pain in the rear b/c of all the prep time (crushing pretzels), cooling (of each layer before adding the next, jello), and defrosting (cool whip, frozen strawberries) so I didn't mind too much. I get to Thanksgiving dinner yesterday and EVERYONE is so upset I didn't make the dish! I told them to blame my mom LOL! My engaged cousin even joked that she wants it instead of a wedding cake!

I believe this dish is as popular as it is b/c of the perfect combination of salty and sweet. If you haven't tried it yet, do!
